merely saying “hp lovecraft was racist” doesn’t really capture the scope of it, like most people hear that and they go “yeah no shit it was like 100 years ago, most people were really racist” but the thing was the dude was especially racist even for the time

This is true! Lovecraft’s racism concerned his white contemporaries.

Lovecraft had a pen pal relationship with Robert E. Howard, who created Conan the Barbarian. Howard - who by the standards of today would almost definitely be considered a racist - talked Lovecraft out of his previously open nazi sympathies, on the grounds that as one of very few Irish Americans living in Texas at the time, Howard would likely be harmed by a government sponsored ethnic cleansing.

Please note it was his pen pal who talked Lovecraft out of openly supporting nazis and not Sonia Greene, the Jewish Ukrainian immigrant that Lovecraft was married to.

Also please note that the most consistent feature of Lovecraft’s work is an evil and alien Other.
