Paris when it Sprinkles
To most the welcoming warmth of the great yellow fiery orb of life in the sky is a great gift, a triumph over the darker days, a reason to explore the outdoors, to get up, to stretch, to expose skin. The sun is life, the sun and its blistering rays gives life to days where monotony had taken its terrible toll ending in apathy and contentment.
That is what people prefer, the sun speaks to them of summer, of freedom, of carefree happiness, of pools and barbecues and long days and tans and sundresses and flings with the barely-known. A time of barefooted happiness, of days lived quickly and forgotten as soon as they begin.
To me the epitome of perfection is the gentle rain of summer. It tells of storms that have come or are coming, it washes the heaviness from the air, the stagnant weight of all the memories being made with the intention to forget them. The tiny, sharp, sticks of misting droplets pricking your skin. Reminding you to live, to live as you have never lived before, to live with purpose, to live as you were living your best day over and over again. Reminding you that your footprints will be washed away, that you alone hold your life. That your past is just as much as yours as your present and future.
Perhaps the rain takes me away, away from the plains and their newness, takes me back to that day a lifetime ago. The day that it rained in Paris. The day where each droplet struck my skin with such caressing perfection that I felt at one with the generations of artists who had climbed the great Monmarte to find their art. A day so perfectly, accidentally, magical that a tear will often well up in memory to join the droplets of rain that had moistened my face that day.
So you can keep you hot sunny days of summer, your hot days of sand and sun and beaches, I will always choose my gentle rain and my perfect day in Paris when it sprinkles.
