In a Temple City dedicated to the worship of the Living Circle on the northern shore of the Pebbled Sea, outside the city of Summersea in the realm of Emelan, young students are instructed in the study of Air, Earth, Fire, and Water -- and in magic.
It has been 1037 years since the fall of the Kurchal Empire, and a year-and-a-half since the vicious pirate attacks on Winding Circle. The temple-city
has recovered, and life goes on...

We are currently accepting applications for ALL OPEN CHARACTERS, as well as ORIGINAL CHARACTERS, and will begin accepting applications for any of the above who do not wish to return soon. Any questions, just ASK!
If I wanted to use a FC with a different ethnicity for a character, would that be okay?
Yes, we absolutely allow faceclaim changes! Just like we say on the application page, we just ask for two possible FCs you’d accept as a change (just because it saves time in case one of them doesn’t work!), and a brief explanation why—just a sentence is fine, you don’t need to pose a whole argument! I can’t really think of a good reason why we wouldn’t allow a change.
Unless of course the character is a canon one and you’d want to change them to something that isn’t, obviously. But overall, yes, just put it in your app, or request the alteration ahead of time if you want to make sure it will be approved! Asking for a FC change that doesn’t work won’t get your whole app denied, though; we’ll just hold the app until we can find a faceclaim you like.
If you need help finding a different face, I have a few posted HERE, and I’ll also suggest checking out THIS, THIS, THIS, and THIS as good places to look.
omg you have a poc lady as your person in charge? I love you!
Well, thank you, but we can’t take credit; Moonstream was created by Tamora Pierce, the author of the books that this place is based off of. All we did was choose a faceclaim that we thought was worthy of a lady that awesome! If you like badass ladies and pocs, not to mention brilliantly written fantasy books about friendship and magic, you should definitely check out the Circle of Magic books, because you won’t be disappointed!
It's just starting back up, actually, is what it's doing. If you wanted to apply and help us get the dash moving along again, we'd be thrilled to have you!
Why is half-Jew Ezra Miller listed as "Jewish" on your Asian-racebending list, but 100% Jew Logan Lerman is listed as nothing? Are you implying Jesse Eisenberg is a typical ugly Jew and Logan Lerman is a typical, gorgeous, stunning, perfection, non-Jew? Logan Lerman's parents are both Jews and his grandfathers were both Holocaust survivors. On the other hand, Ezra Miller has a non-Jewish mother. So get your facts straight, you ignorant moron. If Logan Lerman isn't a Jew, no one is. Got it?
I haven’t listed anyone as Jewish anywhere, and I haven’t got an Asian-racebending list. I’ve never made any racebending lists, actually. I genuinely have no idea what you’re talking about. I recognize the first two names you mentioned, and we’ve got an Ezra Miller faceclaim here, but he’s not listed as Jewish, nobody is, and I don’t even know who Jesse Eisenberg is. I think you’ve got the wrong blog, so kindly don’t call me ignorant, thanks.
ETA: I have now looked up Jesse Eisenberg, and I now have even less of an idea what you’re talking about, because he’s another actor, so I don’t know where he comes into things at all unless by Jesse Eisenberg you meant to type Ezra Miller again? Either way—it’s still not anything even remotely relating to this blog, beg your pardon.
I cannot express how deep my apologies are for turning away from this place and the amazing, brilliant people who came to play here and brough along your wonderful, fantastic writing. I will not do it again.
Emelan Circle RP will now once again be accepting applications starting today, and every day hereafter. If you wish to join us, you can choose from one of the bios we provide, invent your own original character, or commission a character to be constructed especially for you. You do not need to be familiar with the Circle of Magic books upon which this roleplay is based to join, but if you are not, there are several resource pages provided that will help you understand this amazing magical world.
I hope you will all forgive me my absence; I am not generally an emotionally fragile person, so I think I can be confident when I assure you that it will not happen again--and I am so very, very sorry that it ever did.
Im so sorry! I have no idea what happened but this roleplay is amazing!! Please do not give up. Im not a member but I would love to be if i ever get any free time! I regularly check for updates and I most definitely appreciate all the hard work you've done! Please do not be discouraged because I know I speak not only for myself, but for a lot of people who are very thankful for you efforts. Cheer up :DD
Thank you so much, darling! You are absolutely wonderful.
And I’ve not given up! Not really. Not entirely. I’m just sort of…drifting. And I’m sorry for that, I really am.
But thank you. That really helps. I appreciate it very, very much.
My activity--as both an admin and a player--or rather lack thereof has been completely inexcusable, and I am so very sorry to behave in such an unprofessional, appalling fashion.
I've just been finding it very, very hard to scrape up any motivation, ever since our erstwhile Sandrilene resigned in such a hateful fashion. It just really rankled that, after I gave up to her the character I'd intended to play, helped her figure out the roleplay, spent half an hour searching for a FC she'd like for her, and then generously accepted a frankly less-than-impressive app to let her join us, she would act like that; just tear into the rp and the work I'd done for her like that. I'm not usually so sensitive (or sensitive at all, honestly), but I think I just expected better of a Tamora Pierce fan; better than rude entitlement and insults. Silly, I know; we're all only human, whatever books we like...but I expected better, and didn't get it, and it hurt.
I know it's no excuse, and I've been absolutely horrible at fulfilling my duties as both player and admin, and it's not fair to any of you or to the roleplay as a whole. And I am so very, very sorry.
I will try to do better. I will. It's just...been hard.
So I'm thinking of putting in a few tweaks here and there around the RP pages, mainly in terms of updating Rosethorn's bio a little bit, and adding a few details on the society of countries outside of Emelan, with information that we learn in Battle Magic.
I don't think they really qualify as spoilers very much -- it's nothing about Rosethorn that we don't already assume to be frank, it just confirms a few details and clears some things up -- and the other stuff isn't about plot events or anything, it would just offer some detail about culture and life in Gyongxe and Yanjing, which could help with character creation and development. But of course, I don't want to negatively impact anyone's enjoyment of Battle Magic, and I know not everyone will have had a chance to read it yet...
So, would including that sort of information bother anyone?
wow! I really love this rp and the detail put into it. I think that's awsome. I'm totally applying when I get the chance :D
Well, wonderful! I’m quite delighted that you like it. And we’d certainly love to have you! I’ll await your app eagerly! Let me know if you have any questions/need any help/etc.
Just to clear things up in case there was any confusion, this is a closed RP group. That does not mean that I am trying to call "dibs" on any characters, or claim that this is the only place where people are allowed to roleplay with an Emelan setting. Frankly I would be delighted if there were as many Tamora Pierce roleplays as there are Harry Potter ones! I only made this place because I couldn't find any to join.
When I say "closed group," I just mean, please don't use your character's blog to roleplay with people who aren't members of this RP group. You can do anything with your character that you want to. I'm not going to come find you and scold you if you use them elsewhere. You can even use the RP's bios if you want (although I would of course appreciate it if you credit the source!), whether you're a member here or not. And yes, that "permission" extends to the characters I designed as well as the canon ones. Honestly at this point, with all of the wonderful details that have been added in applications and interactions, I feel like the current characters are far more the creation of their players than myself; all I did was make the basic seed. They've all become so much more now...and I couldn't be happier about that, truly. If you want to take those characters and incorporate them into other places and plays, by all means you should feel free to do so.
Just use a separate or side blog for that, so that the players here don't have their dashes cluttered with conversations that have no bearing on this roleplay. If you want to interact with the Eleventh Doctor or Draco Malfoy or Deadpool or anyone, that's fine--just don't use the account that is connected to this RP, that's all. You can do anything you want with your character; the rules here only apply to interactions within this roleplay group.
Additionally, please do not break character on your roleplay blog if you can avoid it. We have an ooc blog for those interactions, and if you want, you can always made a side blog connected to your character's account for ooc posts. You can put a link for that on your page, and share that link with your fellow players, and you can post anything you want there. It just sort of ruins the point of having a character account in the first place if half the posts are yours and not "theirs," don't you think? Heck, I made a side account for myself from the main blog so that I could keep related but irrelevant posts off the roleplay dash; it's not like that's hard to do.
I hope that clears up anything that was confusing for anyone, be they a current member or a prospective applicant. I apologize if any of this was unclear before; I thought it was pretty standard protocol for roleplay groups, so perhaps I was a bit ambiguous before, and if so then I am sorry.
If anyone has any questions or complaints or concerns about anything, please don't hesitate to ask me.

THE CHARACTER:
1. NAME: Rosethorn
2. AGE 35
3. STATUS Dedicate
4. SEXUAL ORIENTATION Bisexual
APPEARANCE – Rosethorn is a stocky, broad-shouldered woman who stands about 5 feet and 4 inches tall. She has dark brown eyes, ivory skin, and closely cropped auburn hair, which is usually parted to the left. Rosethorn is also said to have a nice nose and a beautifully carved mouth offset with a firm jaw. In fact, she is frequently described by others as beautiful, but she doesn’t pay much attention to her looks. However, Rosethorn frequently wears hats and uses creams and lotions to protect her skin, which is her one area of vanity. She prefers to work barefoot and normally wears the dark green habit that marks her dedication to the gods of the earth.
HISTORY – Rosethorn, nee Niva, was born on Longnight of Hearth Moon in 1002 KF. However, she celebrates her birthday on Midsummer. She comes from a family of farmers in northern Anderran, where she lived with her parents and two brothers. She discovered her green magic when she was six years old and managed to revive several dying potato plants that her family had. From then on, her magic benefited her father financially, who loved the money she helped bring in as much as he loved her, and he became one of the wealthiest farmers in the district. They didn’t lack for money, but nobody in her family was ever very affectionate. She spent much of her childhood outside the home, either with friends or with nature. Rosethorn’s village was attacked by bandits once and they raped her best friend. However, they left her because her face was scarred. The bandits wished, among other things, to obtain Rosethorn for her magic, but her father and brothers fought them off. Rosethron learned about growing crops on her father’s farm, but she also began nursing nestlings in her early teens and learned a great deal about birds.
Rosethorn eventually left her farm to study and learn more about her magic. She studied at Winding Circle Temple, where she met Dedicate Crane, nee Isas, when they were both novices. They developed a competitive friendship , each trying to out compete the other at figuring out the ingredients that went into everything from stews to medicines and diseases. Later, both were sent to Lightsbridge for three years. Rosethorn hated her time there because she thought everything was dead. She returned to Winding Circle after her time at Lightsbridge and eventually became a Dedicate, dedicated to the gods of the earth. She maintains her prickly relationship with Crane, and although she is particularly disapproving of his greenhouse, she is fonder of him than she leads people to believe.
Rosethorn is currently in charge of and resides at Discipline Cottage with her longtime friend and partner, Dedicate Lark. Together, the two of them take care of and train children who have a hard time fitting in elsewhere at Winding Circle. She is also classed as a great mage and is part of Winding Circle Initiate Council, although she downplays those roles. Her opinions are well respected throughout Winding Circle and even throughout Summersea and its surrounding areas. Duke Vedris especially values her opinion, and often seeks her out for advice. During Goose Moon of 1035, Sadrilene Fa Toren, Daja Kisubo, Trisana Chandler, and Briar Moss all moved in to Discipline. The latter shares her plant magic, so she became his primary teacher and guardian to all four children. Within the past year, Rosethorn, along with Lark and their four charges, have faced earthquakes, pirates, forest fire, and plagues. During the Blue Pox epidemic, Rosethorn contracted the disease and nearly died; the children just managed to pull her back from death. However, she was left with a slight slur that may always be there, and she is still working on recovering her physical stamina and health.
PERSONALITY – People often comment that Rosethorn’s name suits her: pretty as a rose and sharp as a thorn. She has a fairly sharp temper and even sharper tongue, and she doesn’t discriminate about whom she turns them on. This can be especially intimidating for children, although Rosethorn is usually gentler with them than adults. Most people regard Rosethorn with a healthy dose of fear and respect. However, she does have her spot spots. She cares deeply for her four charges, and her partner, and also likes to care for nestlings when people bring them to her. Although she doesn’t like most people a great deal, she takes her vows seriously and does her best to help people whenever she can. For example, she visits Urda’s House regularly and brings medicines and helps treat the sick. Even though she dislikes nursing, Rosethorn is unusually gentle with the sick and helpless. However, she hates people who think they know more about her life and their illness than she does.
MAGIC – Rosethorn is an ambient plant mage, and is currently classed as a great mage. She discovered her magic when she was young, but didn’t become trained until her teenage years. She values common sense and natural remedies as much as her magic, and uses both quite frequently. She takes a practical yet creative approach with her plants and magic that often result in unusual but useful workings. Rosethorn respects both ambient and academic magic, and often stresses the differences between the two. She thinks academic mages in general need to have more respect for ambient magic, and has little patience with those who think academic magic is superior.
DEDICATION – Earth Dedicate. She takes her vows seriously, even though she doesn’t usually like people.
HOUSING – Discipline Cottage, where she lives with Dedicate Lark and their four charges.
WRITING SAMPLE:
Rosethorn wiped a bead of sweat off her forehead, put her hands on her hips, and glared at the multitude of weeds surrounding her tomato plants. She was working alone today since she had sent Briar off to help other Dedicates treat the rest of the pox patients. She knew the weeds all had to be pulled, but her body wasn’t as strong as it had been before she had contracted that blasted pox. Working in the hot sun was tiring, and she had to stop frequently to take breaks that she couldn’t afford-not if she wanted all the weeding to be done by the end of the week. However, there was nothing she could do about it; her body would heal and strengthen at its own rate. So she glared instead. The weeds seemed to almost shrink away at her fierce stare, and she smiled grimly. At least some things hadn’t changed.
“Rosethorn?”
Rosethorn glanced at the open door of the cottage and saw Lark standing there with a concerned look on her face. Lark’s cocked head and graceful stance truly made her resemble the bird that was her namesake. Sparing a look toward the sky, Rosethorn noticed that the sun had almost reached its peak. She could guess what Lark wanted, but decided to pretend ignorance. “What, Lark?” she asked impatiently.
The woman pretended not to notice Rosethorn’s tone. “Midday’s on the table and you’ve been out here since after breakfast. Why don’t you come inside, eat something, and rest a bit?” Lark said soothingly.
“I don’t need to rest.” Rosethorn snapped. She knew Lark meant well, but she was hot and irritable and did not want people hovering over her all the time. Briar was bad enough, always standing around prepared to help with heavy loads or to steer her firmly toward the nearest armchair so she would sit for a while. She didn’t need the same treatment from her lover.
Lark came outside and slid an arm around her shoulder. “Maybe not, but you do need to eat and the children would like to spend some time with you.”
Rosethorn growled and shrugged Lark’s arm off. She reluctantly trudged over to the well and began to wash away the dirt that seemed to be entrenched in every crevice of her hands and feet. It didn’t help that she worked barefoot, but there was just something so satisfying about feeling the soil under her toes. After she was decently clean, Rosethorn walked wearily into her home and noticed that everyone was seated and waiting for her. The table was laden with meats, breads, cheeses, vegetables, and a hearty broth-rich fare for a midday meal. Since the food had come from Winding Circle’s kitchens, she knew that this was Dedicate Gorse’s subtle way of helping her recover her stamina. She felt a pang of gratitude, and noticed that everyone was watching her with a mix of love and concern. Rosethorn looked at the faces around the table. Sandry’s was bright and open, her emotions printed clearly for anyone to read. Daja’s gaze and smile were steady, but a small furrow at her brow gave away her worry. Tris’ characteristic scowl was in place, but she had pulled out Rosethorn’s chair for her and had already filled her teacup. And Lark…Lark wore the same look of love and exasperation that she usually directed at Rosethorn, yet it was tempered with compassion and understanding. Perhaps I could be a little kinder. I suppose a little hovering won’t hurt me. Rosethorn thought. “Well, here I am. Let’s eat.” she said briskly.
At her words, everyone began chattering and grabbed a dish to start loading up their plates. Rosethorn brushed Lark’s shoulder on her way to her seat and leaned down next to the Dedicate’s ear. “I’m sorry,” she murmured. Lark only squeezed her hand in reply.
CANON – I’ve read all the Circle of Magic books as well as the Circle Opens books, and I’ve also read Will of the Empress and Melting Stones.
