Electrify America sets up first MW-scale BESS at EV charging station in US

American EV fast-charging network Electrify America has recently unveiled its first application of a megawatt-level battery energy storage system (BESS) for electric vehicle charging stations, building upon its existing BESS installations at over 150 stations across the U.S.

The charging station at Baker, California has expanded from eight to twelve chargers aided by the addition of a MW-scale battery storage system. Combined with a solar canopy, the integrated systems go a long way in managing energy costs and reducing stress on the grid, by acting as a buffer to supplement power to chargers, when local utilities limit the amount of power a station can draw from the grid.

The integration of the roughly 1.5 MW / 3 MWh energy storage system with 66 kW of generation potential from the solar canopy, coupled with sophisticated control technology, is Electrify America's comprehensive solution for adding additional power to the station.

This application leverages energy storage and solar as a 'non-wires alternative' in lieu of relying on additional utility 'wired' infrastructure that may not be feasible, according to the company. Such innovative approaches become critical to expanding EV charging into more remote areas to reach more consumers where utilities may not be able to deliver the capacity needed to install or expand charging infrastructure, it adds.

"The application of the megawatt-level energy storage is the latest example of how we are continuously innovating to tackle infrastructure challenges and meet charging needs today," said Jigar Shah, Head of Energy Services at Electrify America.

"As we expand the use of such solutions to more of our charging stations and also to our medium-duty and heavy-duty electric fleet customers, we are positioned to enable continued transportation electrification even in the face of utility capacity constraints."

"To put this into perspective, the energy storage system at Baker, when fully charged, could provide enough energy for an average household for over three months on the single charge," Shah added.

This energy storage deployment builds upon Electrify America's previous announcement of having surpassed over 30 megawatts of installed energy storage now featured at over 150 locations. In California, over 50 charging stations coupled with energy storage constitute the largest operating Virtual Power Plant (VPP) of its kind shifting the use of on-peak energy to lower carbon intensity off-peak hours in the California Independent System Operator's wholesale energy market, CAISO.

Customers are already experiencing the benefits of the newly installed energy storage system and charger expansion, claims the company. Charging load at the site has already surpassed 1 megawatt of peak charging demand, with all of that megawatt-level load at various times being served by just the energy storage system and solar canopy, it adds. Australian state pushes for biggest energy storage target; to invest $157 million to cut emissions

Australia's Victoria state on Tuesday (Sept. 27) announced that it would introduce the biggest energy storage target in Australia and support the nation-leading target with a $157 million package supporting renewable energy generation and storage projects across the state.

Victoria's new energy storage targets include both short and long-duration energy storage systems which can store up to 8 hours of energy and includes batteries, hydroelectricity, and hydrogen technologies.

"Victoria is already the renewable energy capital of Australia, and now, we'll have the biggest energy storage targets in the country too," said Daniel Andrews, Premier of Victoria.

"We've cut emissions by more than any other state, tripled the amount of renewable energy and created thousands of jobs. We're not just talking about climate action – we're getting on with it."

The state is expected to reach 2.6 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy storage by the end of the decade, with an increased target of 6.3GW of storage by 2035, Victoria will have enough renewable energy to power half of its current homes during the peak energy hours. The newly announced targets are aimed at cutting emissions, bringing down power bills, boosting renewable energy investments, alongside creating thousands of new jobs in Victoria.

According to the official statement, to support these targets, the Labor Government is investing $119 million from the $540 million Renewable Energy Zone Fund in a 125MW big battery and grid forming inverter in the Murray Renewable Energy Zone, between Bendigo and Red Cliffs.

Continuing its drive to meet the RE target of 50 percent by 2030 the government also announced $38.2 million from the Energy Innovation Fund (EIF) to be given to four projects using new technology to generate and store clean energy.

The latest EIF round, the government noted, will provide $7 million for a 100MW battery and inverter in Terang, as well as $19.3 million for two bioenergy projects at farms in Gippsland and Barwon. Yarra Valley Water will receive $11.9 million to install an electrolyzer to make renewable hydrogen using recycled water in Wollert.

Australia's Victoria state is already home to the largest battery in the Southern Hemisphere - the Victorian Big Battery - a 300 MW battery energy storage project near Geelong.

More recently, Community Batteries are also starting to come up across the state backed by the $11 million for the Neighbourhood Battery Initiative. The Government's $1.3 billion Solar Homes program, the official release stated, has already helped almost 10,000 Victorian households install a battery.

"Our new energy storage targets will deliver up to 12,700 jobs for Victorians – but most importantly, they'll save Victorian families money on their energy bills, and slash our state's emissions for generations to come," said Lily D'Ambrosio, Minister of Energy.

WESD 2022: Debunking demand, transportation challenges for Green Hydrogen

For green hydrogen to become cost-competitive, key challenges with regard to softer demand and long-haul transportation need to be worked out, by identifying effective manufacturing, energy carriers, and alternative use-cases for the clean fuel in each market.

As part of the World Energy Storage Day 2022 annual conference organized by IESA, a session on the demand and supply aspects of green hydrogen drew much attention. Speakers of the session dealt with the critical questions on how green hydrogen would be made, transported, and consumed (and essentially – in what means and forms) while locating the global H2 demand-supply scenario in the backdrop of current international developments affecting the industry.

Charles Howland, Partner, Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP, delineated a plethora of current issues and challenges faced by the demand-supply chains of green hydrogen in global markets. "The industry needs to distinguish between 'technically possible' and 'commercially feasible' projects, while the transformative approach to cost-effective transportation of H2 is critical for long-term stability", he said.

"While EU, US, and other countries are ramping up hydrogen supply, the demand is softer and doesn't match the supply. Realistic predictions on H2 production in foreseeable future given the insufficient pace of renewable energy growth and higher priority to electrification and rising power demand ought to be the important considerations", he added.

Some of the other key observations made and aspects touched by Howland are as follows:

To make H2 cost-competitive with other sources, the industry will require government subsidies, at least in short term, along with a drop in costs of electricity and electrolyzers.

Countries with higher abilities to generate cheap renewable electricity will be best placed to produce competitive green H2.

Current geopolitical implications of large H2 imports, energy security concerns especially in Europe, and addressing the North-South divide are critical.

We need to examine the economic feasibility and energy loss of long-haul H2 transportation by means other than the pipeline.

Balancing the use of renewable energy and green hydrogen for local consumption and exports.

Ammonia as H2 carrier

On the question of effective use-case and carrier options for hydrogen, Natalie Gupta, Director - Bunkering Yara Clean Ammonia, Yara International ASA, opined that the existing ammonia infrastructure is the most efficient route to hydrogen enabled market.

"Clean ammonia has immense potential worth $ 220 billion in the emerging hydrogen-based global economy by 2050, finding effective application in power generation, agricultural inputs, industrial use, and as shipping fuel and hydrogen carrier", she said.

She added that ammonia is by far the most competitive clean fuel for deep-sea shipping, expected to grow into an $ 87 billion market. "As hydrogen carrier, ammonia's market is valued at $ 17 billion by 2050".

A slew of advantages of ammonia as an H2 carrier was highlighted in the session.

The greater mass of H2 in a liter of liquid ammonia than in a litra of liquid H2.

Ammonia's boiling point is much higher than H2, hence conversion and preservation in the liquid form require less energy.

Ammonia's lower thermodynamic losses during storage and transportation.

A majority of NH3 synthesis can be carbon-free using renewable electricity.

Nitrogen production and ammonia cycle are potentially electrifiable.

If produced in a carbon-free way, then stored and delivered for ultimate decomposition to extract H2, ammonia represents a zero-CO2 hydrogen carrier.

Hydrogen in Europe

The speaker at the WESD 2022 session also spoke on the European Commission's latest plan 'REPowerEU' that is setting a target of 10 million tonnes of domestic renewable production and 10 million tonnes of imports by 2030, to replace natural gas, coal, and oil to decarbonize the European industries.

Natalie Gupta noted that Europe prioritizes green H2, but blue hydrogen is however seen as a viable transition fuel by producers. "Yara Clean Ammonia sees blue ammonia as a transition fuel, as it affirms a robust pipeline with solid project economics and profitability without the need for further subsidies.

Green Hydrogen needs an early mover strategy where government support will be required. Lower costs in the future may increase its competitiveness", she said.

Charles Howland said, "REPowerEU targets can act as key drivers for increased demand for green H2 in the region, but there are problems with the lack of adequate infrastructure to support the aspired numbers".

In his initial remarks as a moderator of the session, Cristian Carter, Director, Innovation Norway spoke on the readiness of Norway to support new H2 and ammonia projects, with a continued focus on R&D and commercialization of new technologies and pilot projects.

"Norway is known for its interesting energy mix, and hydrogen ecosystem is an integral part of our environmental goals".

He reiterated Norway's government's latest commitment to establish 5 hydrogen hubs in maritime transport by 2025, with a slew of critical measures to stimulate demand in the H2 ecosystem.

JSW Group and ElectricPe join forces for enabling EV charging ecosystem

JSW Group has announced that it has selected ElectricPe as its charging partner. This partnership has come into effect following the recent green policy introduced by JSW to provide incentives for employees to purchase electric vehicles and provide charging infrastructure within their office and plant premises.
