Discerning Atmospheres During A Worship Set
So I’ve been sitting here at From The Hearth since 10:30 this morning, and it’s now 1:30. And I’ve been processing with God about what I had experienced last night, as far as picking up different things in the atmosphere during a worship set while at a youth group. And what I was picking up and discerning had actually been bothering me since then. God, being the God that He is, had put Kalley Heiligenthal on my heart. She, who was one of the worship leaders last night, had constantly been highlighted to me through the evening. And this afternoon, she walks through the cafe doors and sits down in one of the booths, with a meal and a book, waiting for a friend of hers to arrive. Seeing her, I stood and walked over, to simply ask her if I could ask her something, regarding how to handle discernment while leading worship. So we sat down, and got to talk for a little bit. Something that I’ve recognized that I’ll often pick up during worship sets, being a feeler and all, is the sense of competition and performance from others around me. As if our praise is a competition to the throne of God, and as if our private praise to Him is meant to be performed to the people around us. As silly as all of this may sound, it’s actually very common in church cultures. But my biggest question, is when you’re sensing all of that around you, how do you deal with it and what’s the proper way to handle it. Not to suffer through it or simply ignore it, but how to handle it with God. It’s one of those things, where the person could rather be clearly doing things to distract you, while they’re doing their fancy riffs, and trying to out do you with their high harmonies, and add lipping. Or sometimes you may just feel the weighty and heavy sense of competition, which unfortunately, can so easily steal your attention. So what’s a good way to handle such a situation? Kalley was sharing with me, how before she ever starts a set, she likes to pray and allign herself with truth, and what she knows. “I know that Jesus is good and that He died on the cross for me...” Thats some solid doctrine. But then even digging into the depths, like, “What is heaven doing right now?” Well, Heavens pretty much always worshipping, that’s always a good place to start. Or when you start to sense distracting things, “God, are you wanting me to break through this atmosphere? Are you wanting me to wait for your Okay-Go?” “Where should we steer this boat, God?” I remember, there was one worship set I was leading in particular back in February, in a healing room. I may have prayed up before the set, and got my alone time with Papa. But I remember the set going so roughly, and there was no unity within the band, not so much because that was my fault as the worship leader, but because there were multiple people, including myself, who’s hearts were not aligned and we’re actually questioning what God could be doing, rather then being in agreement and just going for it. Something that I’ve learned about co-laboring with God, is that you don’t actually have to know what exactly it is that He’s doing in order to partner with Him. It just takes for both of our hands to be on deck and willing to go whichever direction He may be leading. During that set that just seemed to be going down south by the minute, I finally had to just pause, and stop singing. And eventually the band stopped playing. And I’m not gonna lie, my flesh started to freak out a little bit, because what’s going on when the bands not even playing a melody? How awkward could that have been? And though the band members were looking at me, frantically wondering which song we were moving onto next, I had to tell them to wait on God, because I had no idea. Which actually made a couple of the members freak out a little bit more. But we waited, in silence. And it was glorious and beautiful. Because when you’re willing to sit before the throne of God, taking off your own crown, and listen to whatever He has to say, and do whatever it is He wants to do, He never fails to show up. Something Kalley said, somewhere in all of the wisdom she was dishing out to me, was how “Instead of getting bullied by those atmospheres, or coming under them, or feeling smaller, they actually have to bow down to Jesus.” Which means we’re given authority to change atmospheres. You hear it all the time, here at Bethel. How “we change atmospheres, they don’t change us.” Or how, “we’re called to change the atmosphere and host the presence of God wherever we go.” And it’s so true, and it’s great to practice in our lives, but not just some areas. Every area. I’m excited to excercise in that, the next time I’m in a setting where I feel like the atmosphere is trying to overcome me, when in reality, I have the Heaven given authority to command it to bow down, and “knock that crap off in Jesus’ name.” Authority is a powerful thing. And it’s even more powerful when you’re co-laboring with God, using discernment, wisdom and humility.
God Gave You Your Sex Drive
“Inspired by Havilah Cunnington: I’m currently diving into this book called “The Naked Truth About Sexuality” and I am absolutely loving it! Something I’m excited to be transparent about is the journey of my own sexuality. At 17, I lost my virginity. And I had been so determined to wait till marriage, even before I knew about Jesus. But because of where I was at in my life, I didn’t have a true passion for purity, so that “rule” that I had filed in the back of my mind, was not priority, nor a passion to follow through with. And because it wasn’t a priority in my heart, it was easily wavered by emotions and circumstances and shakable mindsets. And since that had happened, the door has been open, senses were being awakened, and I had experienced something that I wasn’t meant to experience yet. And it was hard to open a door, experience something so emotionally powerful, and then shut the door and act like it never even exist in the first place. I’m going to quote a few paragraphs that have been written by Havilah, but bare with me, because this is gonna get reaaaal good in a second. “When God gave you your sex drive, He had a plan. He knew that it would take self-control and patience to manage. He knew it would require you to grow in all of the other fruits of the Spirit as well - love for yourself, joy and peace in the waiting, kindness towards yourself and others, good choices, and faithfullness as you trust in Him. He knew that you wouldn’t be able to do it without His help. And He said it was good. In giving you your sex drive, God had a plan to grow you up, both in maturity and relationship with Him. Because He started this good work in you, He will be faithful to see it completed. He is not going to leave you until you figure out how to be perfect. He is going to teach you how to steward it in such a way that honors Him as well as the person you will eventualy commit to for the rest of your life. No matter how hard you pray for it to leave, He won’t take it away; it was a gift!” And here’s what I’m getting to..... “So what are we supposed to do about it? My suggestion is to open the door and look in. Not with shame, not with guilt that comes when we feel perverted, but take a healthy glimpse inside for the sake of understanding. God opened the door long ago and it was the church that shut it, not Him. He always wanted to show us exactly what sex was meant to be, and He wanted us to know the power of sex. He wanted us to fully aware and fully alive, and fully connected with out spouse without the regret, shame or pain that attaches to the pure thing that God created.” So I guess that might be one of the greatest issues. The way we view sex, no matter what your perspective may be on it, it has been cultivated and sculpted by your up bringing and surroundings. Whether that was the church, or in your home. Growing up, you may have been exposed to sexual things on television, or the way your friends and family spoke about it all of the time, or cracking crude jokes. Or maybe that entire door was absolutely forbidden to peak through. Sex may have been that topic that was never brought up and you were to find out about it, someday, on your own. But until then, it doesn’t even exist. In scripture, it talks about Holy Spirit renewing your mind and the way that it works. (Emphasis added) “Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by list and deception. INSTEAD, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your NEW nature, created to be like God - truly righteous and holy.” Ephesians 4:21-24 (NLT) Or this one! This is a good one!” “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Romans 12:2 I love these verses, because they’re so reassuring that God the Father is so willing to help us renew our minds. I don’t know about you, but renewing my thoughts, ideas and perspectives on sex, wouldn’t be that easy to do without Holy Spirit working inside of me. Being in the current dating relationship that I’m in right now, has taught me to be patient in new ways. It’s not too difficult to be patient and loving with someone who you dearly love and care about. Especially when they’re your best friend. But no one ever taught you in the church, or during your childhood, or even in school, how to be patient and loving in such a way that honors the one you’re dating. How to honor their body, and to see them with a pure heart and through the eyes of Christ. Thankfully, the renewing of my minds been taking place a bit before I’ve started dating my boyfriend. But even when passion and desire comes in like a wave, I think it’s important for us as believers to know how to handle those waves. It’s like standing at the shore at a beach. We can stand out there, and pretend like waves aren’t going to come in, but then once one catches us by surprise, it’d be nice to know how to brace ourselves and brace our bodies for the impact, rather then getting totally knocked down, and THEN praying for God to take away the waves. He’s not taking away the simple nature of something. But like Havilah said up above, instead to white knuckling the temptation and urges and pretending they’re not there, how about getting a healthy glimpse and perspective on what sex truly is, and what it’s intent is to be. In order for us to have a revolution like that in our own lives, we have to understand and respect the way we’ve been created. We need to know who God is.

Trust Your Judgment
More than most things that Jesus has been teaching me in the past couple of weeks is how much more I should trust my judgment and discernment. And to not discard whatever bit of discernment I may have, even if it’s the size of a grain of sand. What’s really cool about being in relationship with the creator of the universe and Holy Spirit, is that you get what you’re promised. It’s like a package deal, pretty much. He promises us the renewing of our mind to take place, which is activated by Holy Spirit. And with that renewing of the mind comes wisdom, and the discernment that you carry in your heart begins to grow, and grow and grow. So having that understanding, and knowing that the Spirit of the living God lives inside of us, communicating to us 24/7, guiding and leading us and ready to speak whenever we’re ready to listen. Why do we question our discernment and our judgment. Do we not trust God? Do we not trust our ability to hear? If it’s the fear and doubt of not hearing what God could be saying, well maybe this will encourage you. I believe that there is a supernatural type of growth that takes place in our hearts and in our spiritual muscles when we go out on faith, trusting and obeying what it is that we’re feeling in our hearts. The things that God reveals and speaks to us rarely makes any logical sense, and odds are, your flesh isn’t going to feel comfortable with what it is He’s saying and calling you to do. That’s a pretty good indicator that God has spoken. Whenever we go on a leap of faith though, it’s like going up to the next pound when lifting weights. It’s like you’ve just turned down the dial on your hearing aid, because the static noise that’s coming through your hearing piece is now actually the nonsense, doubt and wordly standards that the enemy is trying to whisper into your ear and infect your heart with. As long as we’re walking forward, we’ll be making progress, and that’s when God will be able to instruct us on which road to turn on. We can’t expect God to start giving us step by step directions, one after another, if we’re hesitant to even start up the car. We have to be willing to move, make mistakes, brush the dirt off, allow God to get involved, help us up, keep us covered in His grace and mercy, and allow Him to take our hand and lovingly guide us to continue on. Don’t be afraid of mistakes, because the reality is, the enemy is terrified of you moving forward and stepping more and more into your identity and into your purpose. Mistakes will happen, but they’re not fatal, only temporary. Wendy Backlund made a great analogy this last Sunday night at the service I went to. We talked about navigation with Siri or Google Maps, and how it gives us directions as we drive, though if we make a wrong turn, it doesn’t tell us how "you messed up.”, or tell us to “get out of the car and just cancel the whole thing cause apparently you don’t know how to follow directions.” Instead, it simply reroutes, and shows us how to get back onto the main road and try again. In a way, I feel like that’s how God is when giving us directions and we make a wrong turn. There’s no condemnation, but a really loving reroute, and it really just depends if we want to go along with it and continue to follow Him or not. So whatever thing that you’re currently hesitant on stepping out on, know that God is right there by your side, making the decision with you. And trust your discernment. Know that Holy Spirit trusts you more than you trust yourself. Let that sink.
I really enjoyed sitting out this evening. 🌻🌙 and then plus, having a phone date with my lovey clearly made the evening just THAT much greater. 🐇

It’s not the glory that we’re waiting to fill the earth, it’s really the knowledge of His glory that we’re waiting for. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory.” Isaiah 6:3
