“Sounds like a reasonable concern,” Maisie admitted.  Frostford was pretty quiet crime-wise, but she sometimes wondered if that meant they were even less prepared if something truly awful were to happen.  “But with cops like you, I guess Frostford’s as ready as it can be to meet anything bad comin’ our way.”

“If you need a safe space to nap, I have a pretty comfy couch at home you can crash on,” he offered. “I also have less comfortable chairs you can try to sleep in at the office but you know how accounting offices get super wild so…” It actually might be the perfect place to put anyone to sleep. “Hey! And we thank you for your service. I love my daily coffee and bagel from the bakery.” 

“You, Lucas Dunn, are a saint!”  Maisie declared.  “Don’t be surprised when I show up on your doorstep or at your office door with my pillow and my bunny slippers.”  No doubt she’d manage to get sucked into some random background noise in any office, but if she had a shot at falling asleep in any office... Accounting was probably second only to advanced science offices.  She saluted with a grin.  “Happy to serve!  I swear I’m gonna have your order memorized again soon- just takes me a bit to get back in the swing of things.”

Maggie knew their parents could be pretty… harsh sometimes. But with there being so many of them who actually did what they wanted, Maggie figured by the time Maisie was old enough for college, she could do whatever she wanted. She was the baby, after all. “I’ll talk to them.” Maybe Maggie could get through, since she was a mom also. “You know you are always welcome to come with us. Olive loves her aunt ‘may-bee.’” She looked down at Olive and smiled, then wrapped her arm around Maisie. “If you need to come stay with us for a little bit, you know you can. I know how tense things can get.”

“Trust me, they don’t do talking,” she grumbled.  “Yelling-- they definitely do yelling.  And mom has mastered this thing where she doesn’t say anything, just crushes you with the weight of her silent disappointment.”  Aunt May-bee was definitely Maisie’s favorite person to be.  The mention of her nickname and Maggie’s offer made her feel lighter.  Maisie knew she could always count on her sister, even when she was going up against her parents.  She caught Maggie’s sleeve in her fingers, giving it a little tug the way she used to when she was little.  “Thanks Mags,” she said softly.  “I might.  If it doesn’t get better...  Or if it gets worse.”

“Maisie, c’mon. That’s not true.” He put on the most comforting voice he could muster, that isn’t what he was saying at all. He hoped she knew that. “Course load too much? You could go part time if you wanted, maybe make things a little easier. It’d take longer, but you could still do it. Less stressful.”

She hoped it wasn’t true... But either way, it was comforting to know that Boone didn’t think it was.  “Not so much the course load as the course subject.  I finally ran out of gen eds to take to delay picking a major.  And I’d rather die than sit through a science or math class, so... Dropping out.”

“The employee discount? –Have I mentioned you’re my favorite Duchanne,” Diana teased, giving the youngest Duchanne a grin and a slight nudge with her elbow. “I knew there was a reason I liked you. But seriously, it’s on me. –Can you always fall asleep wherever you want, or did you just not get enough sleep last night?” The brunette asked, giving Maisie a small smile. 

“Uh, can I get that in writin’?!”  Maisie asked delightedly.  “I’m rubbing my siblings nose in that one by one- Max through Mason.”  She hooked her arm through Diana’s, leading them towards Wild Flour.  “Ok you’re officially my favorite.  But we’re definitely still using the discount,” she laughed.  “Definitely didn’t get enough sleep last night, but I am also the queen of fallin’ asleep in random places.  One of my friends at UA has a album on her phone that was all pictures of me knocked out in random places around campus.  If that girl weren’t sweeter than stolen honey I’d be in some real trouble.”

“You know,” Hazel leaned forward and whispered conspiratorially. “When I was a kid I probably read one too many Goosebump books and I was convinced Old Midge was an alien or a monster or a witch even. Not the Wharton Creek Witch, she’s too sad, just a real mean one, Wizard of Oz style, wouldn’t you believe it?”

“Ah! Wait! Yes!” Maisie hissed, automatically whispering too.  God knows if Midge could hear them...  “This could explain so many things.  I woulda sworn on my own Pops’s grave that she put a hex on me or somethin’ when I had an overdue book that I was dodgin’ bringin’ in.”

“Jiminy Christmas,” Maisie gaped for a second.  “I have about twelve guesses.  Valentines day ex-associated-items burning party!  Somebody tried to deep fry a turkey and it exploded!  Again!” She was basically jumping up and down at this point.  “Sun through a magnifying glass in the livin’ room!  My sister finally got her hands on a flamethrower!  Oh god... That would be bad...”  The blonde finally blinked herself back to attention.  “Wait, okay, one guess... Uh... Fire somehow caused by the Wharton Creek Witch!”

“I don’t think I’ve ever been so nervous to give someone my pizza order,” Maisie laughed.  “Pepperoni, black olives, and spinach... Lots of hot sauce for dippin’! And before you ask, I’m neutral on the whole pineapple debate.  You wanna split one?”

“Apples have natural sugar, like 13 grams. The response from that is similar to caffeine because the vitamins are released slowly throughout the body. Coffee stimulates you but doesn’t give you the calories or the carbs that energize you like an apple can. Better pay off in the end,” she shrugged. All the lectures from her gymnastics coaches over the years apparently stuck somewhere in her brain. 

“Huh.  That’s actually pretty cool.  And helpful for me actually!  Caffeine doesn’t do much for me, so maybe this will.  I guess I’ll have to start having an apple with my morning coffee,” she laughed.  “You into nutrition?  Or just my new go to phone-a-friend if I ever get on a trivia show?”

Eddie gave a hearty chuckle, “I appreciate that sentiment.  I have been known on occasion to be totally distracted by the inside of my eyelids after a long day or work.”  He smiled at her warmly, “It is a long time since I have watched the clouds move by but I used to enjoy it.  I think I used it more as an excuse to pretend I was working because I would take my books into the garden with me.”

His smile put Maisie at ease, knowing he understood.  “I used to do that too!  I dragged my backpack all over town, sayin’ I was doin’ homework to any adult who managed to grab me by the arm and scold me on my way by.  Why’d you stop watchin’?”

“That’s what I thought when they told me. I’m pretty sure cheese fries could get me to go anywhere.” He chuckled and scratched absentmindedly at his face, his fingers coming away glittery. Zach let out a quiet sigh and wiped his fingers on his pants to no avail. “Not typically, thank God. It’s been awhile since I had one that crazy, so I guess I’ll take it as a sign I needed to let loose. I just wish I remembered more.”

“I mean they do say that your body finds ways to tell you want you need,” she giggled.  “You should have a friend take video.  I was my friend’s video gal for her 20th when I was at UA.  I swear I was the only person who could figure out heads or tails of our timeline of that night.”  Maisie inspected the glitter on his face.  “I think I read something about using oil to get glitter off...  We pranked some of the guys in the frat next door... and then we felt really bad.  I think it might have helped!”

“I promise that I won’t give her that idea,’ she said with a little smile. “But if my little cousin Delaney was around, then I don’t think I can stop them.’ Taylor told her with a little shake of her head. “Now my students, on the other hand, I’ll have to fight them hand and foot to try and stop them before my face becomes a bunch of colors.”

“They sound like a terrifying battle,” she giggled.  “Kinda like that weird question- would you rather fight a horse sized duck or twenty duck sized horses?  But a grown person or twenty screaming kids!”

“Helps that Kat works there, you know? Pretty sure at this point Eddie realizes it’s easier to put up with me than fight it. Last time he told me I couldn’t be loiterin’ without orderin’ more than ten dollars off the menu, I asked him how much a coffee creamer was worth and ordered ‘bout 200 hundred of ‘em, so he knows better.” She beamed, feeling a little too pleased with herself over the scheme. “You have a late night?”

“Connections always help,” Maisie agreed.  “Sometimes I try to sneak into the vet’s office to play with the puppies because Maggie works there.  Depending on who’s on shift I can sometimes get away with it.” She gasped at the story, breaking out into giggles.  “That’s genius!”  She crowed, shoving Madison’s arm excitedly.  “I shoulda thought of that one.  What on earth did you do with 200 lil’ creamers?”

“i couldn’t imagine not being able to sleep. it’s like…. one of my favorite things to do.” catching up on sleep was a myth, but beck could fool herself into thinking she was regaining all of the hours she’d lost while in dc. “hey, sometimes you just gotta sleep. people nap in parks all the time.”

“Trust me, me too,”  Maisie laughed.  She was the nap queen of her dorm room, usually knocking out for at least forty minutes after long seminar classes.  “True! And I can’t imagine there’s a safer place than Frostford for nappin’ outside.”

Hearing that Maisie had a lot on her mind, only caused Morgan’s look to come off as even more concerned. “Well, what’s up buttercup? Spill. Ya know I’m a good listener, and I’m happy to try an help. Is everythin’ okay?” She shifted her position, glancing around making sure there wasn’t anything that needed tending to in that moment. She had the timer for the muffins that were in the back on her apron lapel. She still had quite a bit more time before it went off, but she always tried to make sure.

“If you get mad you owe me my favorite cookies.  Chocolate chip oatmeal with extra chocolate chips or I’ll cry,” she whined.  It made her stomach turn, thinking that Morgan might give her the same disappointed look as her parents.  At least she was kind of used to getting it from them.  Maisie pouted, following Morgan’s glance around the kitchen, just in case there was something the master chef needed to tend to that would get her out of this, but to no avail.  “I’m not going back to UA in the fall.”

“Foiled again,” she smirked.  “So there’s a slight possibility that it’s less of an emergency emergency, and more of a coffee emergency.  As in I need some.  And I could get it for us for free!”  Maisie sang.  “Say yes, say yes, please please please!”

“You’re right, I apologize. I should really be better at remember your fun, little quirks,” he teased. “Peachy and…sleepy?” She was right, it had been a while since he saw the younger Duchanne. Didn’t mean she didn’t know everything that’s happened. “I’ve been good. And you’re right. What have you been up to since you’ve gotten back?” 

“Yeeaah those sound about right,” Maisie admitted.  She’d been gone for most of the last year but she’d had plenty of town-related updates from her siblings and friends.  She’d heard... Well, she’s heard.  Luckily, her own issues hadn’t been broadcasted across town yet.  Though, in Frostford, that could only last so long.  “Mostly back to makin’ coffee.  And bein’ up at god awful hours to keep the ladies of this town happy and with bread.”
