On the 13th of June, Iâve had the pleasure of hosting a great Boiler Room session live from Paris in collaboration with Huawei, with fantastic performances by Stellar Om Source & Eva Papamargariti, OK Lou, Hiele, and Crystallmess. I also did some local production on the show. You can watch the full 4 hours of the event in this Youtube vid.
Hidden Happenings is a series diving into undiscovered and progressive clubbing scenes around Europe.
Exactly 2 months ago, we produced this INTO THE NIGHT session of BOILER ROOM, done in partnership with Eristoff Vodka. We put up a full-on rave in an secret warehouse in the middle of an industrial area.Â
Venue research + venue staffing + full venue supplier chain + tons of misc production by me, in collaboration with Amy, Gloria, Harry, Juline, & many others at Boiler Room.Â
Surprise lineup had Dave Clarke, MPIA3, and TGAF. I didn't have a single sip of vodka throughout production and learned how to drive a forklift.Â

Paris - Considerada por muitos como a capital da World Music, Branko viaja para Paris
The Paris episode of CLUB ATLAS is out. I had a great time working on it in a local producer capacity. This documentary series is created & hosted by Branko (from Buraka Som Sistema and Enchufada) for RTP2 in Portugal.Â
It showcases emerging dance scenes from cities all around the world, meets young and established artists, and contextualizes them with the help of journalists.Â
Branko is the absolute best person to be given the opportunity to create a TV show like this and it makes me wish we had a similar one on French public television. It was very interesting to see his perspective on whatâs happening here (and whatâs not).Â
Click through to watch the episode for vibes and chats with Feadz, Acid Arab, 2ManyDJs, TGAF, Rinse France, Paradoxe Club, David Blot, Christelle Oyiri, Birdy Nam Nam, that dude Teki, plus some cameos by a chubby and bearded 2017 me.

This is the kind of day you fear will come when you realize that all the people who count for you eventually disappear. With each actor and director of his generation passing away, the Lost In La Mancha stuff and at every health scare of his, my dread grew bigger over the years⊠and here we are.
Jean Rochefort is in a hundred movies and heâs wonderful in all of them, but you already knew that.
But I didnât really know Rochefort from a pair of â70s movies about middle-aged Parisian dudes and their quirky affairsâŠ
For kids of my generation, Jean Rochefort is the unforgettable narrator of a series of 7" records released in France by Walt Disney, including Winnie The Pooh, and my favourite of them:Â Peter Pan. Iâll lose my shit just thinking about him saying the name Wendy, so I wonât. For now.
1984: My mother drops me on the first day of preschool and I had barely been spoken to in French. Ever. My Iranian parents were separated and rarely spoke French at home. So first year was rough. However, I had the incredible fortune of growing up in Chinatown (in the heart of Parisâ 13th arrondissement) where teachers were absolute superheroes capable of handling kids coming from every culture. And at home I had Jean Rochefort telling me those stories in bed. Rochefort had that mellifluous voice and insanely warm presence that makes you feel everything will be alright. And it did. Thanks to a wonderful team of teachers (I love you, Madame Moreau), I turned out OK, despite still carrying some⊠letâs call it âsocial lazinessâ?
1999: Shortly after graduating high school, Iâm chatting with my internet friend Teki Latex over then-popular instant messaging software ICQâhey, weâre in 1999. I tell him I want to do a rap version of the Rochefort/Disney 7âČs, with the little bell signaling the end of the side and everything. I was making some money building websites and I needed a music partner. Teki immediately tells me that TTCâs then-main producer Flash Gordon had the same idea.
Weeks later we meet and become friends. Songs featuring Teki as half of sci-fi-rap duo PSYCHOTRON (again: this is 1999) and Mike Ladd (of Infesticons fame) are recorded and backed with sampled-filled instrumentals and skits. Flash Gordon becomes Mr. Flash and in 2000, LE VOYAGE FANTASTIQUEÂ 7âł EP comes out in a heavy-duty cardboard sleeve with illustration and layout copying the Disney records. Hear it on YouTube.
So expensive to produce for a niche record like this, that one could only explain its existence by some dot com bubble money behind it, and, well⊠it sort of was the case: I was working as a web designer for a few record companies and bands including gallows alt-rap group Svinkels. Through them I made a few friends, including a director named Bertrand Doudet.
Although Pedro was mostly associated to big house music acts, I knew he had a taste for fun weird shit, loved connecting people, worked with Mehdi who was no stranger to mutant hiphop, and just seemed like a very nice dude⊠so I had a feeling it might be worth it. They met at rue Ramey shortly after. Pedro remembers Flashâs name from âLe Voyage Fantastiqueâ (we had sent copies to EVERYONE) but heâs very busy managing Daft Punk, Mehdi and Cassius. He promises he will stay in touch.
He did: a few months later, he calls Flash and tells him heâs doing his own label and would like to start with a track Flash & I worked together but didnât release commercially: âRadar Riderâ. Pedro buys the master from me and releases it on the first Ed Banger EP in the first weeks of 2003, backed by a track by Zdar under his A Bass Day moniker. Flash & I worked together on a couple of his Ed Banger releases (the mixtape âMonsieur Sexeâ and his âChampionsâ EP feat. TTC) and slowly drifted apart.
2005: I wanted to celebrate the relaunch of my online store Arcade Modeâmost graciously styled by So Meâwith a series of blue, wait for it⊠7" records consisting of new tracks from all my friends. The first one was a split between Pedro and Flash, followed by names from Institubes (that was right before I joined the label), from Ed Banger, and the many friends they introduced me to (full discography here).
Years pass. As Iâm wrapping up the 7" series, I wonder what happened with this Pedro/Baste session that started it all. It was still sitting on a hard drive. My impression was that after Ed Banger had become this international dance juggernaut, a funny French alt-rap song wouldnât be the best fit for his label. There also was a big, tough-to-clear sample on the beat. So I asked Pedro if I could release it on Arcade Mode and without hesitation he said yesâwhich has been a constant since I met him. The vinyl came out in August of 2006, more than 4 years after the studio session.
That big sample the instrumental flips? It comes from Vladimir Cosmaâs theme for the movie âLe Grand Blond Avec Une Chaussure Noireâ, starring Jean Rochefort. On the song, Baste even calls Pedro Le Grand Blond Ă La Casquette Noire (the tall blond with a black hat).
Rest in peace, Jean Rochefort.
Thank you for reading me stories and thank you for bringing a few people together.
