. ݁ ⊹ . ݁ all aboard the hms olfactory: scents of amc's the terror (pt. 4/???) . ݁ ⊹ . ݁
wanted to do my best to get one more of these posts out before terror camp (wink)! happy to report that i managed to do it. >:)
quick reminder of the premise here: perfume/cologne picks for each character based on historical perfume practices, character arcs, personalities, and more! i plan to do a longer write-up in the future (honestly, maybe a YT video breaking this down???) that goes into more detail about the historical development of perfume near the time of our cold boys' demises.
also, like last time, i have gratitude to show! there are many folks who have contributed to this project in some way so far (and i am so thankful for that!!), but this post in particular would not have happened without @vespermyotis and @mascara-pyjama. thank you both for your kickass fragrance recommendations, and for being such lovely people to talk to! i can always count on y'all for fun, generative discussions. :) <3

Edward "Ned" Little: Squid and Penguin - Zoologist
the connection to the sea and the cold in these two scents through their notes and descriptions on the Zoologist site made it impossible to not utilize them for cold boys. i was not aware of these scents/Zoologist as a perfume house until this project, and i am very thankful to folks for pointing me in their direction!
i genuinely go back and forth on which one of these two scents, Squid and Penguin, are the better fit for Ned, if i had to choose. maybe y’all can decide...
with Squid, i immediately thought to how Little is found by Crozier at the end of the series. the chains on his face, and the way that they’re shaped do remind me of tentacles, if i think about it hard enough. Zoologist also attaches a sense of melancholy to the fragrance, which pairs well with Ned’s emotional hardships in the show when balancing choices, priorities, and survival.
with Penguin, Zoologist associates the fragrance with, “a reminder of nature’s harsh reality,” while describing how male penguins guard their eggs while the mother hunts. i associated these details with Ned’s final arc, continuing on with his group of men while Crozier is taken by the mutineers. (speaking of Crozier: i could honestly see this being a good pick for him, too...)
with Ned’s connection to Crozier (albeit a complicated one – if i recall correctly, Matthew McNulty referred to Little as a kid in a divorce in relation to him), it was important to me that some aspect of their fragrances have overlap. benzoin and incense act as those connectors here, with them being present in Zoologist’s Squid for Little, and the Tom Ford pick for Crozier.
another connection that wasn’t intentional, but i wanted to flag, is across top notes for Little and Collins (Black Salt - Heretic). this is another character pairing that i think deserves more analysis and attention! their main connection plot-wise is crozier’s status as a “lushington” (Little references Collins not being discreet enough to keep up the task of taking alcohol from Fitzjames's personal store; and perhaps in foil, Collins is seen reporting to Fitzjames with concern about a spirit room requisition form for Erebus from Crozier), and potentially in appearance, too. i have more to say on this – shocker, since Collins is a favorite of mine... – but either way, notes related to pepper are their point of connection, here. pink pepper is present in both of these picks for Ned, and black pepper is present for Collins. there may be something to be said there in regards to the two of them and rank (Ned being higher up the hierarchy as a Lieutenant, and Collins being more plain in comparison as a Second Master).
wanted to note for transparency that not a lot of perfume history is referenced here that hasn’t already been stated in previous fragrance picks for the crew (synthetic ambergris being present in Squid – important to flag that Zoologist opts for synthetic notes in lieu of animal products) – my apologies for that, if anyone was hoping for more of that sort of thing this go-around!
but back to notes! pink pepper also serves as a connector to the other Lieut in the duo for this post...

George Henry Hodgson: L'Homme À la Rose - Maison Francis Kurkdjian Paris and Much Ado About the Duke - Penhaligon's
also mentioned in previous posts, fragrances marketed towards men during the time of the Franklin Expedition often had citrus notes, so the grapefruit in l'Homme À la Rose nods to that fact nicely!
we know from Carnival that Hodgson has a bit of a fascination with France (lovely Marie Antoinette costume there, Lieutenant), so one of the fragrances being from Maison Francis Kurkdjian Paris felt very fitting!
a more “masculine” (insert nuance here about fragrance and gender) rose fragrance also felt like a good fit for Hodgson. it speaks to his character’s sophisticated nature that pops up throughout the series (pay attention to how he eats, in particular, for a stark example of his prim and proper conduct).
continuing to lean into Hodgson’s fancy side, Much Ado About the Duke absolutely accomplishes that. this is another take on a rose scent, with a descriptive narrative about a young duke, from Penhaligon‘s website: "The handsome young Duke's peppery rose fragrance sets hearts aflutter- but not the ones you might think. His wife, the most coveted girl in London, seems not to interest him at all. Fancy that." a fragrance with a character, and with a story felt especially apt for Hodgson, who seems to fancy a good anecdote himself throughout the show. a major example of this, of course, is his monologue to Goodsir, towards the end of the series.
more to come, scent-happy sailors! kisses if u read/interact. mwah!
