Courage
My whole love and respect is for the person who accepts himself totally, as he is. He has courage. He has courage to face the whole pressure of the society which is bent upon splitting him into divisions â into good and bad, into saint and sinner. He is really a brave, courageous being who stands against the whole history of man, of morality, and declares to the skies his reality, whatever it is.

Leo Carrillo State Beach circa June 8, 2015. Man does push-ups in his underpants. #reallife #vanlife #westy #malibu #explore #sketch #mentalmemory
Santa Monica. April 26, 2015. Picture by a passerby, John Jefferson. Man bun. Running shoes. A dope camera. "I am just metering," he said when I hopped out to see what he was doing with one shoe off on the sidewalk in front of me. "I've got to do some metering too" I said, feeling so clever, as I popped two more quarters in the actual parking thingamabob... #vanlife #connect #talktopeople #sayhi #vw #vanagonshenanigans #homeiswhereyouparkit #santamonica #california
Oh hello. You're gonna take a little getting used to...but I like you. You're like a new human haircut that everyone says looks good but for the human the newness still feels a little awkward... #changeisgood #vanagon #facelift #hookups #westy #vanlife
While I sat patiently waiting Buckwild's arrival a few weeks ago, she was enjoying her most familiar and loved form of travel- public transportation. I'm her first vehicle ever, so it's a big step for her to add spending time with me to her lifestyle of walking, biking, bussing and taking the train. She wants to keep the balance, so she can enjoy stunning vistas I can take her too, but also the joy of journeying alongside so many others, and the peace she feels on her non van adventures too. I totally get it, I'm big, I eat gasoline for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Buckwild loves the earth and freedom. I believe we can be what eachother needs, and stay true to ourselves. I'm just happy to have someone putting love into me again, and I know she will stay true to her roots and also reach new heights through our shared adventures. #vanlife #publictransportation #lotsofwaystogetaround #riverside #transitions #balance #vanagon #everythingwillgowrong #everythingwillbeokay
March 27, 2015 cont'd... This was Buckwild's first Tow experience so she was nervous/excited to discover how this would all go down. I was calm, cool and collected- not my first rodeo lol. First one here though, and with Buckwild, so I was actually more excited that I let on too. Buckwild's friend, Alberto, came out with her and let us use his AAA tow service. Fortunately for us the local mechanic Buckwild was referred to after many helpful possibilities were presented to her was less than 7 miles away. We said goodbye and THANK YOU to Alberto around 10:30am and off we went to the guys at The German Car Service. I had a good feeling about them and their expertise in handling old vans like me. #vanlife #behindthescenic #adventure #losangeles #learning #gratitude
Friday, March 27th. So I didn't make it home last night...my clutch have out on the 10 freeway and Buckwild fortunately got me off before I came to a rest at an intersection in front of a Del Taco, and coincidentally, the Kaiser-Permanente hospital. A photographer named Nicholas was so kind and helped push me into the Del taco parking lot, my butt to this tree, and the establishment also kindly allowed me to sleep here overnight without worrying about the notoriously brutal LA parking police. I guess when Saul said "you've got maybe 6 months left on the clutch depending on how you drive it" he meant "you have 60 miles left on it especially since you are a new stick driver and are going to make classic newbie mistakes and ride the clutch, Buckwild." oh well. All's well that ends well. Glad for kind, helping humans. #vanlife #behindthescenic #everythingwillgowrong #everythingwillbeokay #vanagonshenanigans #learning
Amidst all the distractions, what is really in front of you? You are. . "What is in front of you is a whole world of experiences beyond your imagination. Put yourself, and your growth and development, first." -Phylicia Rashad #wisdom #whatiknownow #vipassana
Nephew
It was you and me
and a bottle of red nailpolish;
your mom a few feet away
you eagerly stroking the brush
down my fingernail-
"So pretty."
You wanted the same,Â
time stood still
we smiled, you laughed,
strawberries and raspberries.Â
It's July and my brother Josh and his wife Maria are visiting me in Los Angeles.
We're on top of the city, watching the sun set behind the Santa Monica Mountains and I'm watching them, watching each other.Â
Love is paying attention.Â
These two pay attention so well.Â

Everywhere
This is Everywhere.Â
We became friends when he joined Lilychow, my other new friend, and I to teach us front and back flips on the Trampolines of Incredible Bounce.
He drank whiskey with pickle juice. He performed a ballerina-esque dance/jump/spinning to beat boxing. He was kind, silly, fun and sweet.
The lesson he was learning at BM this year was that he could do whatever he wanted to- that he didn't need to wait for anyone. "No more standing around waiting for someone else and feeling trapped in a situation I don't want to be in."
He told us about two friends he introduced to one another, and how instead of feeling sad when they hit it off and entered into a deep conversation that E didn't feel connected to, he let them do their thing, saw the goodness in their meeting and his role in that, and he skipped off to a new adventure of his own.Â
I'd been in Black Rock City for about 14-15 hours or so, E, on the otherhand, had early entry and had been building and helping with the Temple for a few days, possibly even a week. I don't really know. Either way, he'd had ample time to be reflecting on the effects of the social experiment, while I was super stoked to be wearing a tutu.
After our afternoon together, Lilychow and I eventually parted with Everywhere for dinner. We rode together to my camp, where E wrote down his coordinates and some recommendations for camps L and I needed to visit. We were all stoked to have met, and I thought I might run into him again, or maybe intentionally try to find him sometime later in the week, but didn't give it much thought.
The next day IÂ found myself at the corner of Gold and some hour I don't remember because I was never paying any attention to time. I was standing at a Kissing Booth, when a woman introducing herself as Sage approached Chad and I, a pre-BM friend.
"This is a total long shot, but do either of you know a guy who goes by the name of Everywhere? I know him from outside and am trying to find him. I know he is part of operating a kissing booth somewhere."
I remembered then that E had mentioned such a thing, although I know it was not the one we were at. It didn't matter though- what were the chances I would be standing at this corner, at this time, and actually know the person she was talking about at this festival of 70,000 people?
With excitement and pride I reached into my belt, "This is crazy, but I actually know exactly where you can find him."
IÂ pulled out the little piece of paper titled "Everywhere's List", complete with exactly where he was sleeping in the Tent City. Sage laughed with delight and wrote it all down, as dumbfounded as I was. She then thanked us, Â and promised to give him a gigantic hug from me. I couldn't think of a better way to reconnect with him.Â
This is how Burning Man was, and how life off the playa is when there's  space for the unplanned- reminders over and over that you're exactly where you need to be and good people are Everywhere.Â
"What I hold dear about my memories are still true and will be as long as I want them to be. Friends will always come and go and landscapes will always change."
-Matt JL Thomson
This is the day that The Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.
âHolding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.â
Los Angeles. January 2013.
This world is calling me into its ugly cement landscape and itâs miles and miles of pavement.
It calls me from the smoggy air, and tree roots bursting out of the seams of sidewalk, themselves raised and cracked from earthquakes I wasnât here to feel.
I am called to this world of natural disasters, of homeless men sleeping in the same spot every night as I walk to my temporary home.
I am called to the poetry of the street lights, the patience of the bus rides, the spanish man in white clothing singing opera at 35 on the corner. Isnât that the guy we saw on the bus? It is.
I am called to the beach, where Jersey teaches rookies how to ride the rings. Grab, pull, twist your hips, and fly. Such a beautiful man, âdo you think he knows how pleasing he is to the eye?â Julian asks, âI donât think he caresâ I answer.
I am called to run on this sand, skirt billowing in the wind, the waves have caught my ankles, now my calves, now my knees, I might as well give them all of me.
I am called to bike, dodging cars, and cracks and potholes, alongside a woman whoâs story inspires me and makes me marvel at the resiliency and determination of the human spirit.
I am called to this sweat . This sweat that drips from the skin of strangers. In rooms that are not my own, that are tall and daunting, and my soft voice has trouble reaching. I am called to be better. I am called to step into the discomfort, the change, the lack of certainty, lack of a bookshelf, of my Iranian rug, my mugs, my bed. My sweet, sweet bed.
I am called to say good-bye to it all, to open into the dark arms of a city begging for angels.
