When I recieve a peer review, the most helpful corrections in my opinion are those that involve the ideas and flow of my paper. I feel like it's easy to check my own grammar because there are set grammar rules that everyone follows. Although, everyone has different perspectives to offer makes their corrections feel like it is feedback that I could not give myself.

My article was about Social Media companies and pushed the idea that the need for them to self-regulate is urgent. They pretty much only used logos because their entire argument was constructed around logic. They used historical examples of what other industries have done to avoid government involvement. No specific companies or people were listed and the argument wasn’t very emotional. I think using ethos and pathos in those aspects would have made the argument stronger, but the only appeal the author really catered to was logos.

I would say that rhetoric has a positive connotation. Rhetoric can be used to express ones thoughts and opinions or to form an argument. Rhetorical analysis is the process of analyzing not only what an argument is, but how the argument is made. If an argument wasn’t made then it can be used to analyze how the author achieves their purpose. It can give more insight into what a piece was written for and can give the reader an entirely different view on what is being analyzed.

Writing Process For Project 1

Before I began writing I wrote each question of the prompt on a piece of paper and answered it. I used that as a general outline for how I was going to write my paper. Once I got all of my words on the page, I went back and added sentences where they could be used to make the paper more coherent and understandable. After I completed all of those steps I proofread and made final corrections. The most useful part of my writing process was definitely having the outline. It made it very easy to stay focused on the intended purpose of the project. As we move into Project 2 I would like to plan ahead more accordingly to allow all of the steps in the writing process reach their full potential.

Advice on Writing

There have been many teachers who have given me writing advice throughout my academic career, but the most useful piece of advice would have to be from my Senior year AP Lit teacher, Mrs. Wilson. One of the major problems she had with my classes analytical papers was the ratio of our personal opinions to the concrete we evidence provided. Eventually she told us that we should go back and color code the sentences in our paragraphs, to show which sentences were personal opinions and which sentences could be used to support our opinions, before submitting our work. This gave us a way to self critique our arguments until they were emotionally complex and supported with valid evidence, creating a solid paper. Through doing this exercise before turning in my graded papers there have been many times that I realized I could either strengthen my argument or further elaborate on my own ideas, bettering my work as a writer.

First vs. Last Day of High School

When I first began high school, I loved reading. I would read in my free time and I would never get tired of opening a good book. As I got assigned reading assignments towards the beginning of my high school career, I genuinely looked forward to it. I wanted to absorb everything I could, from the meaning the author intended to how the reading could apply to my life personally. As I continued to be required to read throughout high school, my interest in reading died. The more I was required to read and analyze, the less I wanted to do the more I was required to read and analyze, the less I wanted to. By the end of high school my feelings toward reading felt forced and not enjoyable.  

Purpose of Reading and Writing

The purpose of reading to me would be to receive a message from the author. Whether the piece is informational or has a deeper meaning, I feel like there is always a message to be taken from the author’s words. Likewise, I also feel like the purpose of writing is to convey a message. Writing could be informational or be used to creatively express one’s opinion, but it is done with the intent to relay a message from the writer.
