Playing with ideas for a sculptural installation based on neolithic venus figurines + the ambiguity of our anthropological past + anthropocenic future. Working title ‘Venus of Diesel series’ as the base for many of these sculptures were non functional (i.e. they couldn’t be taken to the charity shop) pairs of Diesel jeans from my partner’s storage. Upcycle-tastic.

Empty plinths on display at Beecroft Art Gallery in Southend. Something compelling yet beautiful about the barrenness here. A bold image. Made me think of Bruce McLean’s bid to make the first true invisible sculpture. Does the presence of a high art plinth make us think of sculpture? For me it does. They seem so intrinsically entwined.

Ana Lupas made sculptures from straw. Wanting them to have a longer duration and not decay she enclosed them metal tins in a bid to stop them from disintegrating. Thoughtful work. Reminds me of how I encase my old sculptures, and unwanted items, in papier-mache.

IDEAS FOR UN-SHOWN SCULPTURES /// RESPONSE TO BRCUE MCLEAN

Temporary cardboard monoliths given temporary poses in temporary spaces. These unused sculptures have been stacked in the rafters of my new studio for a few months now. This seemed the perfect opportunity to give them an outing and animate them before they get turned into something else. Taking heed of Bruce’s advice to do something you have never done before while channelling his pose work these photographs are the documentation of experiments in bringing static sculpture to life. They moved, even if only for a moment.

Lovely impromptu lump found in a China Town corner. They’re the best. Plus some abstract art in the form of soya sauce spillage, also in said China Town. I’m finding food, or the residue of food, more and more ever present when I’m thinking about my work. Perhaps there’s something in this...will take it forward.

First up: Ackroyd & Harvey and their take on art in the anthropocene. This visual manifesto will help shape my studio production for the coming year and possibly beyond. Cycles of eternal return. Wanting not to waste. Giving function to the functionless. Make art as environmentally responsible as is possible within the studio remit?

ANOTHER way to present Future Museum Fodder, perhaps it can change every time it is exhibited. Again, showing notions of temporality, the fluxing of life, things et al. This idea of the permanent monolithic exhibition is no more, much like the practice of the everyday artist. Perhaps all these different elements make up the work and they change each time?
