2D animations - HSLU 2019-2020

WIth 4 other classmates, we are now working on our graduation movie!!! We have chosen to mix 2D and CGi; The animals, that I had the luck to design will be in 2D, and the human character, Oliver, will be in CGi, like all the “human” things (city, bike, etc.) More updates will follow !

In 2019, I went to France, at Rubika, an animation school for an exchange semester, and I did a 2 minutes movie with an other student. 

Here are the preproduction sheets on which I worked; the witch and the barde: The story takes place in a forest. The schedule was tight and all the process was tough, but I have learned so much.

A Cartoon Network ident movie in which I was involved as a character designer, storyboarder and animator. Done in 2018 with two other classmates and also in collaboration with the ZHdK for the music.

Hey! 

During my Summer vacation I tried tp practice on my own a walk cycle. This is not finished yet, I still need to modify and improve some things - I don’t know which ones but I’ll find - but I just wanted to share the fact that I did something during my holidays!

Here is what I have done during my “2D animation” courses. We had 5 weeks to practice some walk cycles. Drawn by hands and then colorized with tvpaint.

Interview of “@Vietropolis”

We, students, are required to make a portrait of a classmate. 

I’m going to present you @vietropolis​, one of the two girls who was in my team for the stopmotion movie “Sourgrapes” (If you scroll a bit down, you will see the post). 

She is such a character. She’s slow in her work, and when she eats. It’s as if she loves finishing everything in a rush. Maybe she needs challenges..:D But she’s funny and her work too. She never understands why. It’s like “per accident”. For the moment, of what I have seen during this first semester, Vietropolis is very good at drawing people, though she is wearing glasses.

She’s chosen to study stopmotion for the 2nd semester. I hope we will all be able to see what she does! 

Below, you can read an interview, so that it’s easier for you to get to know the character.

I’ve made a portrait of her, so that you can imagine her answering my questions :D

Me: Hello Vietropolis! Tell me, where do you find your inspiration?

V: Hello! From my depression. As an amateur depressionist I often get great inspirations while practicing my hobby. I also get ideas whenever I try to mediate. Well I also have common ways to find inspirations. By watching TV. Yes I’m still watching TV. No, nobody is forcing me. By observing people on the street. Watching films. Listening to music. Reading books.

Me: Do you have a favourite artist? 

V: Of course, as an aspiring artist I oftentimes look up to my role model Viet My. She is the embodiment of what I want to become. Hayao Miyazaki is placed second on my favourite artist’s list.

Me: You have humor, where does that come from?

V: What do you mean? I am a cute gentle little obedient and polite asian girl.

Me: What is your ideal job after the studies?

V: Yes. Thank you very much.

V: Transforming oxygen into carbon dioxide.

Yeah!

Well, that was intense bur I’ve learned so many things! I’ve decided to study mainly 2D for the second semester! I can’t wait to improve my skills. I will learn CGI by myself.

After 3 weeks of CGI lessons, here is my very first 3D animation short movie 🌟 !

My interest in 3D has just increased; now I am not sure anymore if I should specialize in 2D or 3D for the second semester…

In 3 weeks, I will let you know in which direction I subscribed !

So, yes, I am now an animation student 🤘

During this year, we will experiment 2D, 3D and stopmotion animation. I think I have a good connection with 2D; I will probably choose it. But I haven't tried 3D yet, I will begin next week. Things could change after that !

I already know that I won't choose a stopmotion job in the future; maybe I will only work stopmotion for my own, at home..or wherever!

Here is an extract from a really short 2D animation I’ve made at school! Hand-drawing with a light tablet and then edited with TV-Paint. Obviously it is not finished yet, but I’m still working on it !

I’m really happy to see one of my character moving :) !!!

☆"Sourgrapes"☆

So, 2 of my classmates and I, are building our short stop motion movie, step by step!

We needed to build puppets, made in wood wire and wool, the set, with the background and the ground

This stuff was done in 3 days and then we will have 4 days to animate ! I can’t wait to see the result!!
