Ellie wasn't mean.
She was one of the nicest people you knew: to you, at least.
She had been so absorbed in tracking down and finding Abby in her revenge mission. Her eyes had been constantly skimming over you for the last two weeks. You still cared for her, though.
She would wake up sometimes, crying or screaming from a nightmare. Most of the time, you were already up, just waiting to comfort her, but sometimes you woke up in the same cold sweat she did at the sound of your girlfriend yelling in horror.
You felt horrible.
You walked into your shared room, setting your backpack down on the ground as soon as you closed the door behind you. Ellie had skipped out on patrol, claiming she was "too sick," which was very unlike her.
But she wasn't really sick, you knew that.
Considering you walked into her sleeping: always on her side, earphones plugged into a music tape she was listening to. The tape was laying next to her.
You took a good look at her, breathing out a sigh.
You didn't know how to make it better for her. But you wanted to.
You really wanted to.
And even if you couldn't make her happy in the long run, you wanted tonight to be special. She had been sleeping almost non-stop for the past 24 hours.
You walk over to her and stand near the edge of the bed, watching her slow intake of breath as her nose crinkles up, and she shifts around a little bit.

She just nods and gets up.
You walk over to your bag, not to get anything in particular. You just want to give her privacy to change if she wants it.
In the middle of toying with the bullets stuffed in the large front pocket of your bag, you hear Ellie whisper a quiet, "Shit,"

"No, I-" she lets out a small grunt, "just- fucking zipper won't work."
You fully swing our head around at this point, and when you look over at her, she's looking down, desperately pulling at the zipper on her jeans. Her cheeks are all red, and it looks like she's about to start crying again.
Ellie isn't a particularly fragile person, even around you - so this worried you.
"Hey, hey, it's alright," you say as you walk over to her, "give it here." She lets you kneel in front of her and doesn't look even a little bit flustered as you start to gently undo the button on her pants, wiggling the zipper around with as little force as you can.
When you take a quick glance up at Ellie, her head is to the ceiling, trying to get her tears to stop. She quickly swipes one from her cheek at the exact moment you get the zipper to work.
You get up and stand on her level, she looks at you a little embarrassed.
"Thanks," she says.
You dont say anything before you reach your hands up to cup her face, wiping the extra tears remaining. You look at her for a moment before dropping your hands down to her shoulders.
"Need anymore help?" You ask softly as you drop your hands to your side.
To your surprise, she nods her head, and you raise a questioning eyebrow.
"Can you- um... lay down with me?" She says it like it's difficult for her to get out, which you dont doubt.

You we are fucking burning up under those clothes. But you didn't know how to tell her that, if you got bit on the leg, you would die. Unlike her - so it didn't matter. And as much as you would love to put on shorts right now, there was always a risk.

She nods and takes your hand, too out of it to feel embarrassed about anything anymore.
When you two get outside, you turn right, over to where you were able to walk through the woods. Ellie was still following behind you, not asking questions. Not that you would've answered them: she needed to just breathe in the fresh air, she hadn't been in it for days.
As you walked further along the trail, Ellie caught up to you, wrapping her other hand around your already intertwined hands.
"I'm tired..." she whispered, barely loud enough for you to hear. She was clearly very out of it, as this is not something Ellie would ever admit to.
"I know," you say, "me too, but we'll be back soon, 'kay?" You give her hands a squeeze and look up at her. She nods, wobbling on her feet a little bit.
When you get to the end of the trail, it leads over a small mountain. There is a big log near the edge of the short cliff that you step in front of with Ellie, still plenty of room to move around.
Ellie doesn't question as you sit down against it, willing her to do so as well. She didn't know that you didn't actually plan to bring her back into the house tonight. She needed to be outside. She was pale as a ghost and eating less than she normally does, and being cooped up in your depression pit of a house all day surely wasn't helping.
When she sits down next to you, she practically falls onto your side, dropping her head onto your shoulder.
She mumbles something about the view that you dont really understand as you put your arm around her, running your fingers through her hair.
"Ellie..." you say, careful not to disturb the wildlife around you two with your voice. She only gives a small whine in response, so you continue, "you can lay on my lap if you want to rest."
"Yeah?" She asks, hardly audible.
"Mhm."
She drops down onto your lap, closing her eyes. You readjust your hands, so one is still going through her hair.
And you're not too sure why, but you start whispering to her. Small little "it's okay"s or "you can sleep"s.

"That's your last name, right?" You say, grabbing her backpack and unzipping it.

"You cut your hair," you say, only beginning your list.
She had cut an inch or two off of the bottom because she said it was getting too long. Last night, she had thrown it up into a ponytail before bed - and, by God, she looked hot.

"And plus? You're wearing the shirt I got for you... so extra points." You laugh, listing things on your fingers as you continue.

Ellie seems embarrassed by this, looking away from you once again. She has never been one for compliments or sappy stuff like this, so whenever you were presented with the opportunity to praise her more than you normally do, you took it.
