It’s always worth reading the manga of even a really well adapted manga. This is also why really detailed and amazingly illustrated things like BERSERK won’t ever be adapted well.

I’ve been watching Death Note recently and a lot of my friends mentioned the foot rub scene between Light and L being very weird and a variety of other things. I was raised in a strict Catholic household so the reference jumped out to me straight away. Death Note trades in a lot of very explicit Christian imagery and Jesus washing Judas’ feet at the last supper is the obvious connection here. Jesus is aware Judas would be his betrayer just as L makes clear in the corresponding scene that he’s aware he will die soon and knows Light is Kira.
