I wanted to hark on Emo-chan’s morbid side for a bit seeing that I’ve focused more on her perverse side for quite a while. Also staring Lieutenant Joyce from Episode One: Pilot.

When Hilarity becomes Boredom: an Analysis on being "too Zany"

I've recently become aware of sales of most mediums similar to Emo-Chan; T)there is one joke that plays throughout that becomes expected the more you see it. In Emo-Chan the joke is the premise: you're an outcast that kills people in a style where violence is nonexistent. Eventually the game will become more of a chore to play than anything. I'm gonna provide two examples where this works and where it doesn't. In more serious games like Yandere Simulator you're given numerous ways to kill the rival. Finding a kill that's unintentionally hilarious is a stark difference from how the game portrays itself. Imagine that unintentionally hilarious kill playing nonstop as though it was trying to get you to keep laughing; it would get dull within moments. Now take Naughty Bear: Panic in Paradise, though bug-ridden and bland: it looks like an edgy game about a mass murdering teddy bear-- I just said it right there. PiP promotes itself as a game full of edge and grittiness, but is about a teddy bear killing other teddy bears in over-the-top cartoonish ways to the point where it's hilarious in an ironic way. The premise is apparent, but with the style it's portrayed it just stays hilarious throughout. It's predecessor, however... Naughty Bear relishes in how out of place its style is. It presents itself as this child's cartoon and even has a fitting narrator to give it that feel; however, this wears itself down after a while. The Narrator, Ashley Pannel, sticks with you throughout the game to the point where it drags the gimmick to the ground. By the time you reach Episode 6 you're expecting the same plot as the other episodes as well as how "unfitting" everything is. To some, as myself, they hold interest, but only to a small degree. Even the achievements are a chore, though creatively named, not because of difficulty, but because of how bland and boring the main premesis has become. Am I degrading Emo-Chan? No. I find it interesting how games that are "unintentionally hilarious" get more notability than games that overuse it's premise; however, they tend to die out after a few years like a trend. In a sense, it will be impossible to keep Emo-Chan relevant when I get it in stores.

After hearing some new tracks from Lordi, I decided to sketch up concept art of a mock boss fight against Undyne, a favored character of mine from Undertale.

The fight against Undyne would vary between how you treated your victims: either forcing them to commit suicide or killing them outright. There’s no 50/50, however, and don’t expect a “pacifist” run either.

The suicide run Undyne (left) will slowly come at you and will take some seconds to attack you due to her bulky armor; however, she can easily knock you down and packs a punch, as well as giving her a higher defence than the final boss. The goal is to make her kill herself for you; however, she’ll move faster and her attacks will get increasingly harder to dodge the more sanity she looses. Added, you kill anyone during the suicide run you get the achievement “Broken Run.”

The genocide run Undyne (right), due to her lighter built armor, is nimble and her attacks strike hard. To kill her you need to be on your toes: dodge her attacks, counterattack any of her longer moves, and just survive her onslaught of justice. Vice versa to the other run, her sanity is impenetrable, and if someone commits suicide during the genocide run you get the achievement “Broken Run.”

NOTICE

I am currently making a mod to Monster Girl Quest, an erotic game that focuses more on plot than its gimmick: having sex with monster girls, called Heaven’s Utopia where you build a futuristic city with your newfound power to control metal, thus why I haven’t posted anything about Emo-Chan in a while.

An old Kisekae work showing off one of the main mechanics of Emo-Chan: Tension. Tension works like the multiplier in Naughty Bear: the worse you are to the people in the park, the higher the Tension rises meaning more points, but also harder enemies. Added, the music will warp darker the higher Tension rises.

Minuscule/No Tension

Everyone is going on their blissful way enjoying their day and the fresh air. Civilians will talk to you if you walk up to them or question you if they see you holding a weapon. Only when you terrorize them or attack them will the Tension meter get bumped up.

Low Tension

As shown above, when either a civilian witnesses you murder someone, they come across a dead body, or you killed enough civilians to raise Tension, squad cars will appear outside the park and let out cops by the twos: one to look over the body if the two former occurred and one to look for the perpetrator (you). If the former, the cops will look over the body and warn you to back off if you get close to the body. If provoked, cops will shoot you on sight and attempt to arrest you if you have your back turned on them for too long. Added with the introduction of cops, Civilians will treat you like a criminal and will appear paranoid, fearful, and/or suicidal.

Medium Tension

Once the criteria has met, Riot Police will show up to the area and shoot you on sight. Added, a news anchor will appear and report on your vicious crime spree. If you kill the news anchor, you’ll get a bonus cache of points and Tension will immediately skyrocket, so only go after the news anchor if you’re skilled enough.

High/Max Tension

Enter the S.W.A.T once the criteria is met. The area will turn a vicious crimson similar to Blood Lust Mode; however, the S.W.A.T are skilled in tactics that can deal with murder-crazed maniacs like yourself, be it knock you out or cripple your limbs with rubber bullets. If they find you a worse threat than they expected, they’ll change their clip to lead with the intent of shooting you on sight. Added, this level of Tension is where the boss of the episode shows up. Bosses are harder to drive insane, take more hits to kill, and usually can use new moves to either kill you or suppress you, depending on the boss.

Spoof Game Ideas (Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon)

These probably won't be in the final product, but are a nice idea to talk about. Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon is a weird SNES/Famicon game inspired by the original Tetris where you match 3 or more blocks to meet certain requirements, be it filling the opponent's grid with "trash" blocks using Combos and Chains or getting below the CLEAR line. I'm thinking about implementing this into a "spoof" game called "Panels of Life". Panels of Life would include Clear Mode, a mode where you work to get the matching "life panels" into the safe zone--with a twist, and Vs. Mode where you're pitted against Mistress Emo-chan's army of your cursed friends. Again, due to civilian variety and kill animations, this might not be in the final product. Still, if you have any suggestions for spoof games, feel free to hit the ask so we can discuss.

Gimick Ideas: Cloth Tearing

(I may use perverse words/phrases in this jot. Viewer discresion is advised.) I've had this thought for some time about clothing in video games. As far as I've played/studied, not that many games utilize this gimick. I'm not saying this would be in the final product, but it's a thought. When someone gets stabbed, shot, cut, etc., a bloody mark usually pops up on the model/character. I'm sure we all know clothes aren't usually skin tight in real life, though they tend to stick to watery surfaces mostly, it isn't the case with most attacks. Imagine a woman getting cut down the front with a blade: regular clothing would part down the cut, like unbuttoning a vest, and the breasts would bounce or sag slightly with the bra being ruptured as well. If one is dark enough, the same parting can also be seen with human skin, like a cut or actual ripping. Again this might not be a feature, but Cloth Tearing is honestly a gimick I have yet to see put to use on more than just pornographic games.

Personality Show: the "Overzealous" type. People that act like the default personality, Blissful, yet manage to make it seem like they're hiding something. If they experience too many heinous acts too fast they blackout and set out on a witch hunt for you. Like another future mechanic, people who blackout, though killable, are a huge pain to do so. One mess-up with these pissed off characters roaming around will instantly get you on Death's doormat.

Standard designs for Civilians. Civilians will have a wide array of personality choices like “Social Maniac” or “Overzealous” which can alter how they perceive heinous acts like murder or manslaughter, and will appear in more than one episode. Follow for more development art! c:
