someone whose never lived anywhere where malaria / dengue / chikingunya is endemic: we need to love mosquitoes more!!! they're so important to the ecosystem you just need to get over those massive death tolls, the only disease that really needs to be cured is cancer
i know its mostly contrarianism, but the rates at which mosquitoes breed in major cities in the tropics is just as destabilising to local ecosystems lol. surprisingly, every shallow pond, sewer and garden in new delhi was not meant to breed mosquitoes.
to the people in my notes, no the problem with the vaccine against malaria is that it isn't very effective. its about 40% effective and reduces mortality only by 13%. there is basically no treatment for the viral illnesses like dengue or chikingunya. the widely agreed upon option is controlling the spread of the pathogen by its vector. these illnesses lead to about 600k deaths in 2023.
aedes aegypti the specific species that spreads about 53 pathogens is invasive outside north africa. the cutting edge of eradication efforts trialled in brazil is releasing genetically modified male mosquitoes (only the female bites) which self limits the population since their offspring can't survive to adulthood. similar trials for female sterility have been trialled with the malaria causing anopheles genus. these methods have neither the downsides of mass poisoning that insectides do, nor the widespread insectide resistance that mosquitoes eventually develop.

Made this for my friend who likes to draw using coloured pencils :)
Finished a new piece. I think it speaks to my state of mind. Notice the fine details. :)
youâre not hopeless youâre just really really tired and in desperate need of a break and im shaking you by the shoulders and telling you that all is not hopeless but you do need to rest
youâre not an inherently bad person youâre just exhausted and youâre thinking about all of your mistakes but forgetting the good you do. fatigue is lying to you, just take a nap if you can for the love of god before you start apologizing just for existing
legit the best advice i can give you: feed your friends
any time someone is in any kind of crisis or upheaval, offer to feed them. tell them they don't have to choose what it is if they can't make decisions, just ask about allergies and preferences and tell them you're just gonna make food happen at their house.
friend having a baby? delivery gift certificate to order food to the hospital after the kid shows up.
someone's relative passes away? offer to make them dinner.
buddy gets laid off? ask if you can order them lunch.
pal stuck in a depressive episode? offer to drive them to fucking mcdonalds, if that's what they want.
people in crisis are tired and sad and angry and the last thing most of them are doing is thinking about feeding themselves. so if you have the ability or time or money, providing that is always, always a good move.
legit i do this all the time, and it is 100% always appreciated. i have taught all my friends that when something happens, we feed each other. it makes people feel extremely cared for, and I cannot recommend it enough.
This post never truly dies, but with the federal government in the US threatening to shut down food benefits on November 1, you're going to have a lot of hungry people in your community. Now is a great time to give to food banks, check with local community organizations, and donate time, money and resources if you have them.
earlier this year 2 boys got expelled from my school for going on a teachers email and sending another teacher an email that says âyouâre a disgusting little manâ and i laugh about it all the time because imagine opening an email from your coworker and thinking itâs important and then it says that
i just donât think âis dude gender neutralâ is that productive of a conversation because a word can be gendered and still used regardless of gender. i call my male friends girlypop and my female friends man but i donât think anybody would agree that those are somehow not gendered terms.
the real question is just âwould you be willing to apologize and stop using a word if somebody told you it made them uncomfortable?â the answer to which in a surprising number of cases is no mostly because it seems like overall ppl r more upset abt getting accused of transphobia than they are abt being transphobic
pspspsps other disabled people of colour can you reply or tag this with something so i can find yous to follow

Look I don't really care for AI. I'm scared about the increasing over-reliance on tools like chatgpt and Ai assist that repeatedly give flawed or false information, I reject the promise of AI writers and actors that might infect mainstream art. But like...y'all need to change the way you look at this stuff for real. So much popular anti-AI language is so abstracted from any material reality and human truth, making up slurs for Ai bots like that's a normal thing to do, wantonly accusing artists of using Ai like a witch hunt, and talking about the human element of art supplanted by AI in very Christian terms, calling it "sacred" or coming from the soul. You don't have to like AI, but I really encourage you to examine how you feel about it and what it's been making you say. Cause it's apparently making you say ethnic slurs
Should've known this post would've conjured people defending their right to repurpose real life racist pejoratives to talk about chatbots or whatever. Like is that not crazy to anybody else? That so many white liberals are frothing at the mouth to find a socially acceptable reason to put racial slurs on a t shirt at Spencer's?? I'm not even making this up somebody in the tags saw that shit in person what the fuck are we doing anymore
