Orange Is the New Black Is Renewed for Season Four
End of Spring 2015
My spring semester of my junior is coming to a close. This semester has definitely been an interesting one, from basketball, to school and other things. It’s been some really good times and really bad ones. I been through another surgery. Blogging this semester was a little bit easier because I was starting to get a hang of it a bit more. I enjoyed class this semester of course it has been challenging. But a good challenge has never hurt anybody. I still am wanting to get more involved as time allows. I’m looking forward to this summer break because I will be interning for the first time and going back home for the summer. This internship is more of a PR route, even though it’s not what I want to do, you never know things could change. It will definitely be a new experience. I am ready for my senior year to begin, so I can graduate and see what the future holds. -Emôni
Another Story of a Black Man Killed by the Cops
Over the last couple years, the deaths of unarmed black men by white police officers have been increasingly publicized. Michael Brown, Ezell Ford, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, and Walter Scott are merely some of the examples of black men slain by police officers, not including the scoreless others who died in the hands of white civilians. Although rates of black-on-black violence may be severely higher than white-on-black killings, it does not justify either scenario. Recently there was video evidence of an officer shooting Walter Scott. This officer has been charged with murder. http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/apr/12/walter-scott-shooting-officer-michael-slager-audio-recording There is audio of the officer laughing about the situation that happened in South Carolina. Now there is scrutiny about the second officer involved. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/04/18/us/after-walter-scott-shooting-scrutiny-turns-to-2nd-officer.html?_r=0&referrer= When will the madness stop. It seems like almost every week black men are beeing harrassed or killed by the cops. It seems like they are abusing their power. -Emôni
Police Brutality
Police officers abusing their power is becoming a very talked about topic lately. You constantly hear case after case about police brutality. They even have footage of different case. for example Eric Garner case. There was also an incident in Atlanta when cops shot an unarmed and naked man. gaurdianlv.com/2014/04/police-brutality-and-abuse-of-power-the-new-norm-graphic-video/ A recent incident has Los Angeles police looking for one of their own officers in connection with a man's killing. A compact car was seen rushing off from where the man was shot. About three blocks from the scence they found a second abandoned car that bleongs to the rookie LAPD officer. Since then the officer has not reported to work and they do not know where he is. The rookie is still in his probationary phase and was off duty when the killing happened. http://www.cnn.com/2015/03/16/us/california-police-officer-sought/index.html The very people that we rely on everyday to protect us are starting to become some that we cannot fully trust. There has to be a way to cut down on police brutality. We know that all cops are not the same but the ones that are corrupt and out to kill are giving everyone a bad name. -Emôni
Economic Development
Economic development is not something too many people think about on a regular basis. In the city of New Orleans, they have a plan called ProsperityNOLA. It is a plan to drive economic growth in New Orleans for 2018. Economic growth is something that takes time. www.nola.gov/economic-development/Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005 which slowed everything down. In the nine years, Mayor Mitch Landrieu has brought many good things to New Orleans such as, upscale restaurants, adding streetcar lines, uping the film industry in the city and more. Even though he has done these things, there is a gap between those who are benefiting from the recovery and those who are not. The gap is growing. You hear about the new businesses that are coming to the city from billboards along the highway and the news. www.thegaurdian.com/world/2014/aug/29/new-orleans-economic-growth-widening-wealth-gap There is always more that can be done to help with econokic growth by providing more job opportunities. Around the city, you see more businesses coming in, new hospital. I believe if they can bring more to the city, the economic growth here will keep rising. They have to find a way to shorten the gap between those who are benefiting and those who are not. -Emôni
Poverty
When it comes to poverty, you may see it a lot but not hear much about it. We see homeless people everywhere, under bridges, walking along the highway, standing on the side of the corner and more. Poverty is said to be the state or condition of having little to no money, goods, or means of support. The only time we hear about poverty is around holiday such as Thanksgiving and Christmas or in the winter season when it's cold and they are trying to figure out where they can go. Poverty is more than those that are actually homeless. Poverty are those who may struggle daily, weekly, monthly to make ends meet for just them or them and their family. www.npc.umich.edu/poverty/ The subject of poverty does not get the attention that it needs. There should be plans in place to fix this. People should be able to help. Help by providing more shelter and food. Also, help by trying to get people on there feet. Helping them to clean and find jobs or better jobs. Some people just need a little push/help to begin to get over that poverty line. theweek.com/articles/534655/want-end-poverty-americaits-pretty-simple -Emôni
Gender Issues in the Media
http://www.gsdrc.org/go/topic-guides/gender/gender-and-media In today's society, there are definitely challenges of covering gender when it comes to women. Women as a whole are criticized daily. Women are most times set on the back burner to men. When it comes to media jobs, women are seeing an increase in media jobs but not in the top positions such as producers, executive and more high positions. Not only are women criticized by men, other women criticize women even more. For example Giuliana Rancic's comment on Zendaya for her faux locs at the Oscars. As women we have to start respecting each to gain more respect from men. They feel like if we do it, why can't they. Black women are covered in the media as being rough and having bad attitudes, showing off our bodies and having bad mouths, but that is not the case for all black women. Black men are also portrayed as being negative, thugs, and uneducated. The media can do a better job by showing more of the positive of women and men. You don't always have to show the negative. Show the man and women that is helping people out, doing good things in the community, showing the positive accomplishments in their lives. The media could show some improvement when it comes to gender issues. In the media a lot of women are shown as sex symbols and not as the women they really are. http://m.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/giuliana-rancic-apologizes-zendaya-fashion-police-2015242 -Emôni
Race in the Media
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2014/09/the_new_racism_michael_brown_and_trayvon_martin_deny_it_exists_and_smear.html Race has been a touchy subject for forever now. Especially how race is covered in the media. Race is not always covered properly in the media. For example Trayvon Martin case. When he was shot and killed, the media portrayed him to be a thug right off back, without really knowing who he was. The pictures that were posted on the news made him seem like he was a very negative person. The same goes for Michael Brown case and many more. Nobody ever really seems to know the true story to what happens in these situations and no one seems to be responsible for them. Nobody really knows the truth about these men. The first thing you will hear is the negative, so most people are going to stick to what they first. No matter what the actual truth may be. Most people believe almost everything that they see in the media. This topic can be challenging for journalist because when the journalist writes or speaks on these situations, they sometimes have to keep their personal views out of it. I don’t believe that the media does an adequate job of potraying race. Especially, when it comes to the African American community. Most times when you hear about the African American community it is something negative. You hardly ever here of the positive in the community. I honestly haven’t heard of too many organizations that will have an open and honest discussion about race. Some people believe that racism doesn’t still exist, but it does just in a different way. For example denying that racism doesn’t still exist. #blacklivesmatter

Mardi Gras Crime
Mardi Gras season in New Orleans always brings out all of the locals and even more people across the world. It is one of the more festive times in New Orleans. It is filled with parades, beads, people, food, alcohol and even crime. The more people in area and when there is alcohol and drugs involved, there is destined to be a hike in crime. There was 140 plus arrest and 300 plus charges. In the nine-day period, the state troppers seized weapons, had more than 315 non-drug related charges and over 100 narcotic-related charges. http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2015/02/state_police_and_mardi_gras_14.html Is there any way that the city of New Orleans and it's police and state troppers can cut down on the crime during Mardi Gras. Even with all the police on parade routes, there was a shooting on St. Charles during the parade. Could they prevent events like this from happening with more police along the parade routes? Mardi Gras is always a joyous occasion with all the goodies you can receive from the parades. -Emôni
NOPD Education Requirement
With the need of more police officers, the New Orleans Police Department has taken away the requirement of having an higher education. With higher education ot required the applicants to have 60 hours of college credit or two years of experience from the military. This change has gone into effect February 9th. The reason this came about is they noticed that only three percent of thier applicants made it to the training phase. http://www.policeone.com/police-jobs-and-careers/articles/8314573-Questionable-reform-New-Orleans-PD-axes-education-requirement/ Are educated police officers different from un-educated police officers? There have been studies done that say police officers with a four-year degree have a lower discipline rate. Also, college-educated police officers are less brutal than those that are non college-educated. Is this new change really a good idea, just because you need more people on the force. I don't believe that having more is neccessarily mean having better quality. Usually with people going to college they have a better understanding of the way life works and being more mature. http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2015/02/college-educated_police_are_le.html Quantity doesn't mean quality. I believe there should still be some type of college experience before entering the force. -Emôni
NBA Dunk Contest 🏀
The NBA All-Star weekend is rolling around. It is February 13-15. All-Star weekend is an eventful weekend with some of the NBA's best talent. They have added new events over the course of time. But is All-Star weekend still as exciting as it use to be? The dunk contest is one major event that can be kind of boring at times. Sometimes the athletes that most people would like to see participate for example Lebron James won't participate in the event. When you really think about, it is not too many more dunks that haven't alreadt been done that you can do. Not too many different props you can use that haven't already been used. Is there a way the NBA can help bring more excitement or fix the dunk contest. Like other events such as the All-Star game, when players are voted in, they have to participate unless they are injured or have legitimate reasons. As for the dunk contest they have a choice. Should the NBA change this policy? http://m.bleacherreport.com/articles/2355016-nba-insider-all-star-dunk-contest-is-broken-but-does-nba-want-it-to-be-fixed Is the 3-pt shooting contest becoming a more interesting event than the dunk contest. Some of the leagues best 3-pt shooters participate in the event such as Steph Curry, Kyrie Irving, Kyle Korver and more. http://m.espn.go.com/general/blogs/blogpost?blogname=truehoop&id=72171&src=desktop&rand=ref~%7B%22ref%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F%22%7D Dunks have and will probably always be something people want to see but are the 3-pt shooters redefininf the game? -Emôni
Marshawn Lynch vs NFL
Is the NFL worried about the wrong things when it comes to finning Marshawn Lynch? Especially, when there are more important issues to deal with. A major problem the NFL needs to deal with is the Patriots and the deflating of the footballs. Marshawn Lynch has been dealing with a lot this season when it comes from fines from the NFL. Is the NFL trying to make him out to be something that he is not. In a recent interview he explains how he feels. http://m.espn.go.com/nfl/story?storyId=12248321&src=desktop&rand=ref~%7B%22ref%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F%22%7D He is under fire now because of his Beast Mode hats and for only spending short amounts of time in front of reporters. To me it seems like he just wants to handle his business on the field and live his life. He doesn't cause any problems that some other playersay cause. His teammate/quarterback, Russell Wilson made a statement saying, that these fines are becoming excessive. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/01/29/wilson-thinks-nfl-fines-for-marshawn-are-excessive/ If Marshawn Lynch doesn't want to be in the public eye as much, doesn't always feel like talking to the media, I believe they should just let him be. Especially, when he is doing the job he is supposed to and being a good teammate. -Emôni
Spring 2015
Welcome back to my blog, as before I am Emôni Harvey! I am a second semester junior, Mass Communications major with a concentration in broadcast and a minor in entrepreneurship at Xavier University of Louisiana. This is my second semester blogging. This Spring 2015 semester is going to be a little bit more challenging for me but I am looking forward to it. I will be blogging about different topics, more serious topics naybe even controversial to some. I am still apart of Xavier's women basketball team. We are really getting in the most important part of the season, conference time! Then it will be tournament time. I hope that you can find my blog informative on everyday issues and maybe even entertaing at times. I am ready to start this semester off strong and hopefully become more open by the time this semester is over with. Thank you, just follow along into my point of view on various topics!! -Emôni
Fall 2014
This year has definitely been an experience for me, from basketball to the class room to being with my friends. Starting off this semester, I did not know how it would go. I was taking three classes in my major and two in my minor and thought it might be kind of difficult. I am still coming off a surgery in basketball, so I was really starting to doubt how this year would go and would I be able to get back and play this season. Things actually have been going well school wise, I feel that I have learned a lot this semester dealing with my major. I have more confidence in my dream. I feel that I have become a little bit more involved with my major and I am starting to enjoy it more and more every day. This semester has been a good one for me and I am looking forward to next semester and the next challenges I know will come about in the future.
What's so different?
So, it is getting close to the end of the semester and I was thinking what can I write about, that might bring attention to something. I had the perfect idea during one of our basketball games. Like I mentioned in my earlier post, I am a part of Xavier’s Women’s basketball team. It was our homecoming game. Our men’s team played before us and it was a pretty nice crowd. After their game they announced the homecoming court. By the time our game started I noticed people started to leave. Even the homecoming court left. It made me wonder why do people prefer to watch men’s basketball or women’s basketball, especially if the women are winning too. I just don’t understand. That is kind of disrespectful. It is just as much as our homecoming as the men. We work and prepare for our games just as hard as anybody else. A question that most of us will never understand. They say it is not as interesting as men but it’s what you make it.
A New Summitt Legacy
Anyone who knows Women's College Basketball, knows Pat Summitt. She is one of the greatest coaches to ever coach. From winning NCAA National Championships to winning the Arthur Ashe award. http://www.patsummitt.org/our_role/pats_story/her_story.aspx Now, her son Tyler Summitt is starting his journey as a head coach. He has always been around basketball, ever since he was born. He has been in basketball practices since six months and even played himself. He gained his motivation for the love of the game from being around his mom and being cut from his 6th grade team. He has studied the game and even gotten advice from his mother. He is now the head coach at Louisiana Tech. His assistant coach is his mother’s long-time assistant coach Mickie DeMoss. She is someone that has been in his life since his birth and now will help in the beginning of his career. Will he be able to reach the level of his mother of even further? Will it be harder for him considering who his mother is? I believe he will be a great person to follow on his new journey as the new head coach at Louisiana Tech. http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/14/us/pat-tyler-summitt/index.html?hpt=hp_c2
