MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU
Which common fandom Padme tropes do you disagree with?
I’ve sat on this ask for a while in order to best articulate my response, and the best I’ve come up with is that a lot of writers just don’t *get* Padme. And I know that sounds hella pretentious, so let me explain.
I think Padme is seen in fandom at large as someone who loves democracy and loves Anakin, fully and faithfully. The former people understand, but the latter is something I think trips a lot of people up. And I also think that understanding why Padme loved Anakin so much is important to fully understanding her as a character. Not to say that she is defined by her love for Anakin, but rather that the reasons why she loves Anakin sort of define her.
I think popular fandom characterization of Padme paints her as sort of a proto-Hermione Granger, a driven, focused, hyper-rational workaholic. But that characterization can’t be reconciled with the woman who flat out rejected the notion that the love of her life murdered a room of young children in cold blood. So in order to play up the parts of Padme’s identity that (for lack of a better term) make sense to most people, that of the Senator-Queen and staunch defender of democracy, many fans and fan writers either downplay or outright reject Padme’s steadfast faith in Anakin. They play up the imagined serious, no-nonsense, I’ve-Been-In-Politics-From-The-Age-of-Nine-And-Don’t-Know-How-To-Have-Fun aspects of Padme’s personality and leave out the naivete, the romanticism, the stubborness, the recklessness. In other words, they leave out the parts of Padme’s personality that are also found in Anakin.
I guess I could make this response a hell of a lot shorter and say that Padme and Anakin have more in common, personality-wise than people give them credit for. They’re both melodramatic romantics. They both have a reckless streak a mile wide. They can both be a little naive and a little arrogant at times. They’re both family-oriented; carers and nurturers at heart who both desperately want to have a family of their own (albeit for different reasons). They’re both incredibly compassionate (and passionate). They both love deeply, and have a strong sense of loyalty, and remain steadfastly devoted to the causes and people that mean the most to them.
Again, this is not to say that Padme is defined by her relationship with Anakin, but I think fandom has a way of unconsciously casting off the aspects of her personality that make sense of the question of why she fell in love with him, and remained devoted to him to her dying breath (literally), in favor of her more “obvious” character traits. It doesn’t bother me as much as those fics where writers flat out reverse Padme and Obi-Wan’s characterizations, but it does suck to see such a fascinating and dynamic character lessened again and again.
ooh Padme meta, shiny!

being a pilot in star wars is gay subtext
“you need a pilot (a boyfriend)“ “I need a pilot (a boyfriend)”
“luke, your father was one of the greatest pilots (boyfriends) in the republic”
“luke is the greatest pilot (boyfriend) in the outer rim territory”
Helloo I haven’t posted in a while– my internship is starting next week so I’ve been taking the time I have left to majorly work on my Star Wars fashion editorial project! Here are some of the snippets I’ve been posting on Twitter; I’m mostly keeping it under wraps for now. If you’d like to track any updates I’ll be tagging them with #first order lookbook
These are all Hux but I promise I have Kylo and Phasma drawings too, Hux is just the easiest for me to jump into, fight me
i actually really do like kylo ren i think he’s a really well-built-up villain & his personal connection to the skywalkers makes me actually care about his motives/development and i LOVE adam driver but, so it goes, everyone here is the devil and ruins kylo ren in their own unique quirky little way
i bet the reason why finn has so many fans in the resistance is because the entire time he was unconscious poe’s been going around telling the story of how he saved him and bb-8 and the galaxy like “and then just as i thought i was really going to die he WHIPPED off his helmet and THERE he was, THE most beautiful man i’ve ever seen,”
