I feel a perpetual deep-seated alienation from most people in academia because everyone behaves like cops and hall monitors, and then I log onto tumblr to see the exact people who do the alienating posting about how emotionally difficult it is for them to report students for (possibly) using AI to write an assignment

At the end of the day you have to understand some people are mentally ill like really really mentally ill on a level you can’t understand. I see this a lot when someone does something weird or incomprehensible and people are shocked trying to figure out their intentions and why they’d do it and it’s like there’s people who are psychotic or delusional or have rapid mood swings you’ll never be able to comprehend and very often people with other mental illnesses who are able to function more acceptably have a bad lack of understanding of that and compare what they can do and act like as the standard not understanding that’s not the same playing field

People facing addiction, eating disorders, abuse, etc as well will do things you’ll never understand. Getting in the habit of not judging or at the very least not making the lives people who aren’t harming you worse, is actually, a pretty good thing to do

the more i talk to extended family the more i learn that it was EXTREMELY obvious to all the adults around me as a child that something had gone horribly wrong and i needed professional help, but i guess there's some sort of prime directive thing where you can suggest to the kid's parents that the kid might need help but you can never ever ever let on to the kid that you can tell something is wrong. you just have to hold on to that until the kid becomes an adult who's able to say "so i think i experienced a lot of trauma when i was very little" and then you can say "yes, i know. i didn't know what happened but it was completely unmissable that something had." okay. thank you. that's very validating. but why did you leave me to suffer and keep feeling like there was no other explanation than that i was broken and going insane. would it really have been so bad to sit me down and go "i see you. i can't help much, but i can tell something happened and you're in a lot of pain. you deserve help and support. you're not going insane." or something. i don't know. my internal experience was mostly that i had suddenly become a bad child who couldn't seem to get anything right and was always being yelled at. maybe it would have helped if someone had said something.

i hate viral clip farms so bad its unreal i had to dig through so many of them to find the original source for those cars. i understand why reupload accounts with a gimmick or bit like the lodi one dont credit their images and videos even if i think they should, but the rest of them are literally just not doing it because its easier to not do it, and because they dont ever want anyone looking at any social media accounts other than theirs so will discourage that as much as is possible. on tumblr specifically we don't really have those types of aggregator accounts, our bread and butter there is aesthetic bloggers who just dont credit artists because they think it looks ugly to have any amount of text on their posts. it sucks.

i honestly dont even think the worst part of it is that people aren't getting credited for their work, i think the worst part of it is people are being robbed of the opportunity to understand and appreciate what they're actually seeing and go find more of it if they want to. to strip everything of its context makes it all ephemeral noise. it changes from something that meaningfully captures a small and intriguing snippet of the world you live in and just becomes Content. the way real life has been so structurally slopified like this has paved the way for everything people think is bad about ai. frankly i think if you won't share an AI image or video but will share unsourced or misleadingly framed viral clips you're just kind of a hypocrite because there is essentially zero difference in the outcome.

Hola! Hope it's ok to ask, recently I got told that there is no way to socialize kittens from a feral mom, that they will be irreversibly feral since birth. How true is that?

If your look through my "foster kitten" tag, 99% of those were born to feral moms. 99% of kittens you find up for adoption in any shelter are going to be from feral moms.

A very, VERY small sampling of kittens from feral moms. Hell, my own Sundew was a 3 week old feral kitten when I got him.
