š¦ Epilogue of the Dawn (EotV Fanfic) š¦
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works

SPOILERS FOR "EMPIRE OF THE DAWN"
Hey everyone! I spent weeks after finishing the books burning with questions after the ending, as I know many have! So, I decided to take my theories and write a sort of Epilogue of my own, to explore what really happened, some events following the ending, and to get some kind of closure for myself!
So, if you have been wondering what really happened... maybe this will answer some of those burning questions? š
I put a lot of effort into diving into the books to study events and even Jay's writing style, to match the books as closely as possible. I have also drawn some of my own illustrations to feature in this fanfiction as well! The project has been huge for me, taking over two months, and ended up with almost 45k words which sums up to roughly 168 small soft-cover pages, with more time spent on some of my own artwork and a many rounds of revisions. Everything here has been written or drawn by me, with some great help and feedback from the fantastic @medu_nefer.
While he certainly hasn't read it, I did get Jay's blessing to share my work. But of course, all credits for the original work go to him. š
Description (SPOLER WARNING):
The Nightmare Ends (EotV Fanfic)

SPOILERS FOR "EMPIRE OF THE DAWN"
Dior Lachance is haunted by the Forever King, caught in a terrible nightmare. She wakes up in the end, relieved to find herself safe among friends and famille.
(Extra warning for some potentially gruesome details, but if you've read these books you should be fine š)
While working on editing my big behemoth project, I needed to get some creative inspiration out š
I wanted to explore Dior's experiences while in FabiĆ©n's clutches, but it ended up being a nightmare instead. Set soon after the death of FabiĆ©n Voss, after she had been saved by her friends and famille. Thanks to @medu_nefer for her tips and help with posting this first fic š
GUYS
go read this now, it's so good š
in modern day au Gabriel mentions once (1) that he hates mushrooms and for years afterwards Aaron gets him this exact set at every chance - birthdays, christmases, etc.
some years, he'll skip an occasion or two to put Gabe in a false sense of security
when he hears that the set will no longer be manufactured, he spends a small fortune to buy as many of them as he can, just so that he can ensure continuous torment
for anyone looking for that promised character list or wanting more content, please know that i'm currently going through a family emergency, things are absolutely awful and idk when i'll get back to this project or even my writing
maybe i'll use it as a springboard, to take my mind off things, but rn i'm not in the mood for anything tbh
so take care of yourself and your loved ones and please remember that there's always someone who cares about you
I bow to the oracle once more! I am in need of your precious knowledge and hope you'll share with me. I'm prepared to give sacrifice (tell you of other vampire books I love).
My question relates to the sun. I'm aware, with the full strength of the sun a vampire cannot live and must hide or he burns. But, it seems like they can be awake during the daylight hours if keeping to the dark. Do vampires not need sleep?
I know of other vampire stories in which the vampire cannot stay awake during the day even if kept in a dungeon. They might lose consciousness or go insane if they try to stay awake beyond the night. But in EotV I'm fairly certain the vampires are going about their business normally even during the day.
In blood,
a friend of the sun
Hello again!
Basically, vampires do need to sleep - however, they don't have to do it during the day.
The sun being up weakens them, and like you mentioned is a threat in itself, so they tend to sleep during that vulnerable period of time.
But they can switch and sleep during the night and stay awake during the day, as long as they stay within shadows or if the sun is covered (hence the whole daysdeath thing). Like a person who works night shifts - their circadian rhythm just does a 180, despite it being inherently unnatural for us.
I shall await your sacrifice š
Thank you for the swift divination!
As promised, a sacrifice worthy of an oracle to the vampires:
When growing up, my favorite vampire story was The Saga of Darren Shan (12 books written by Darren Shan). I found it in a bookshop when I was on exchange in England and immediately fell in love with the whole thing. The writing is unadorned and precise but not overly complicated (important for non-english speaking me). Itās suspenseful without being melodramatic - aside from the drama 12 year olds get up to but Darren Shan grows up eventually. It has two kinds of vampires pitted against each other, lead by two boys chosen by Fate to fight to the death. Thereās a snakeboy and I love snakes š Thereās romance but it doesnāt conquer all, instead itās courage and perseverance. Thereās intrigue and revenge, ritual and cunning, and when you love someone you need to let them make their own choices. I wonāt spoil the ending but I found it as inventive as the ending of the EotV series.
If you havenāt read it yet, I greatly recommend. Itās a quick read, I promise š
Thank you! Reading tends to be a little tricky with my changing shifts at work but I'll definitely look into these!
I've never actually been into vampires, and the only 2 series involving them that I've ever read are (obviously) EotV and Vampirates, back when I was young 𤣠My point is, I'll gladly take any future recommendations š«”
silly edits aside, he genuinely is too pure for that world š

Hail oracle, itās me again!
Not a question this time, but a suggestion:
Have you ever heard/watched the musical āTanz der Vampireā? It is the right kind of campy and melodramatic. You might like it, judging by how much I love this musical and also EotV. Mist be true for everyone, right?
I am currently in the midst of writing a fanfiction (Eminem vampire AU), and TdV is the basis for those vampires, but when less than 3 hour musical has not enough background lore I look to EotV for inspiration.
There are so many vampires out there! The choice is boundless.
Have an exquisite weekend,
in blood,
a friend of the sun
Hello!
I haven't watched it but you're the second person who's told me about it, so I think I'll look it up in the immediate future. Thank you for your recommendation!
I hope you've also had a great weekend and wish you a great week ahead
P.S. I love how much you clearly love Eminem š
Hail oracle, the vampires are at the gates. Do they need an invitation? In some traditions they do, but I canāt remember how EotV vampires walk over a threshold. With prejudice, that much I know.
Still thinking about the series,
in Blood,
a friend of the sun
This was the first thing I saw when I woke up today and reading your name, dear @powerbottomeminem, made me hesitate if I was actually awake or still asleep, so thanks for the laugh š
So generally yes, they do need an invitation - but to enter a home (plus the invitation has to come from a person that lives in that very place on top of that). Gates don't count as a home, so vampires can for example attack and get within a city's walls. But they can't get inside individual buildings where people live (that's why they often set fires to houses' roofs - to force people to come out and face them).
A good example is shown in Empire of the Dawn. I'm not going to spoil anything in case you haven't read it or EotD yet, but a vampire walked into a city just fine, but then couldn't enter the château itself (it's in Book One, Chapter VII).
Thank you for the question and please stay safe in the night too, my child
Aaron & Baptiste vol. 2
I got to commission the amazing @hypherr once more, so here are the bestest boys again š„¹
And the award for the best actress goes to...
Isla a Cuinn, for the role "normal girl who totally isn't betraying everyone for the Worst Man Ever⢠because she's in love with him"
she deserved her death, but she also deserved an oscar for the performance she pulled, acting over half a year straight with only 2 slipups
due to popular demand, she has been given a second award
Hiii!! Iām just finally getting to read Empire of the Dawn and you seem like the person to ask this. Basically, thereās so much history in the books: for the bloodlines, the history of each character, etc. Iām dying for an almost Wikipedia like resource to access when reading because thereās so many small details I canāt remember. I should have been keeping a journal or something when reading. The fandom wiki online is really lacking and you seem like a person of resource so I thought Iād ask you first.
(I do plan to reread the whole series but I just canāt wait to read Dawn first)
Anyways, have a lovely day! Happy to have found you on here! ā¤ļø
Oh wow, I'm really flattered you thought of me! š«¶
I'm currently working on a characters list, like which vampire is from which bloodline, same thing for palebloods, and then also a tiny bit of info on humans too. It's not gonna be like an encyclopedia (I don't want it to be particularly spoiler-y), but I think it'll cover the basics. However, I'm only about halfway through EotV with it, so I still have a bit to go. It doesn't take long but my work schedule is weird, so it's a bit of a hit and miss when I can work on it. I do have some time off in February though, so I'll definitely finish it by idk, its third week?
However, if you wanna start EotDawn now and/or want more detailed info, hit me up! Via an ask like this or a DM (here or on my main blog, medu-nefer), I'm fine with either, and I love every single interaction in the fandom
Have a wonderful day! ā¤ļø And good luck with reading š
@castellomargot I'm doing it like this again, because I realised by reply was getting a bit too convoluted in the comment and making a post gives you more options of making it clear š
Basically yes, you're correct, but I'd like to go a little deeper into it.
So there's a distinction in the book:
Esani - the Faithless - one of the five bloodlines, vampires whose bloodgifts are sanguimancy;
Esana - the Faithful - followers of Illia (the first Priori of the Esani), who submit to her teachings of salvation and who consume other vampires as a form of redemption for both themselves and those vampires.
Illia had renamed her bloodline to Esana after her revelations, but at this point it's just argument over nomenclature and it's best summarised by the division of nature vs religion.
Esana don't have to be of the Esani bloodline - any vampire can drink another and also gain their bloodgifts as a result. In the crypt under DĆŗn Maergenn there were tombstones of some of the fallen Esana: Lyssa Chastain, Reynaldo Dyvok, Teshirr Ilon. They hailed from the other bloodlines but ultimately chose to join the Esana.
Celene is Esana but Wulfric is both Esana and Esani. Celene has the powers of sanguimancy because, as FabiƩn revealed to Gabriel near the end of EotD, she has consumed Wulfric.
We don't know if all 4 surviving Esana were also Esani - Maryn and Wulfric definitely were, but JĆØnoah and Oleander were only ever referred to as Esana, so we don't have a 100% confirmation. Personally, I would assume that they were, but there is no actual proof.
~~~
And for the record, I love that we're finally getting some movement in the fandom, and I'm honoured to be someone others may look to if they have questions.
Asking questions, sharing theories, brainstorming for fanfics, fanart sketches, screaming about favourite characters - I want it all. I joked about becoming the fandom mother back when I first started writing for EotV on ao3 but honestly, I wouldn't mind it š So don't feel any sort of guilt or uncertainty, I'm loving everything about this!
Actually, thank you for reaching out! ā¤ļø
@castellomargot I hope you don't mind me doing it this way, but I think it'll be more easily accessible this way
How was Maryn under DĆŗn Maergenn?
After the fall of Charbourg, the four surviving Esani made a pact that they would scatter to the corners of the realm, never to gather in one place in case they'd be captured and the faith destroyed for good.
As for DĆŗn Maergenn, Maryn was supposedly born in Ossway (DĆŗn Maergenn is its capital), so perhaps she felt safer there, especially in eventide.
(Book III Chapter XII, p. 298-299 in Waterstones' edition)
How did Celene know Maryn was there and how did she wake her?
She realised that when her moth entered the catacombs with Lilidh - seeing it reminded her of JĆØnoah's chapel in Cairnhaem ("too circular walls", carved with a bas-relief of the Wars of the Blood). Maryn's coffin was located in the very centre of it all, so it was a bit on the nose š
(Book VI Chapter V, p. 615 in EotD Waterstones' edition)
However, Celene didn't wake Maryn. She was woken by Lilidh's blood mixed with Connor's being spilt onto Maryn's tomb. Basically, she needed blood to wake up from eventide.
(Dawn II, p. 645 in EotD Waterstone's edition)
Was it Maryn who woke Dior?
It's answered in EotDawn, so keep reading š¤
Why was Gabriel so angry at Celene for having known vampires are the Redeemer's doing?
Basically, it was breaking his trust. Gabriel had spent so many years fighting in the Redeemer's name and believing in Him, and then he suddenly learnt that all the pain and suffering had actually been caused by Him. He had just prayed before the battle, too, with Celene right there by his side (= she knew, and she followed Him, and she let Gabriel believe too).
We could go further and assume that he therefore blamed Astrid and Patience's deaths on Him too.
And also add the fact that he had just found out that Celene had also killed his father and didn't say a word about it to him. It was a culmination of things, but the biggest one was him being overwhelmed by the truth of the vampire's origins, combined with Celene withholding all the information from him
