A Friendly Check-In

Annette whistles lightly as she raps quietly on the door to her friend Ashe’s room. It has been quite a while since she had last talked to him, and though she had frequently seen him on the monastery grounds, Annette was never in a position to talk to him in great detail. It was quite unfortunate, though expected as both of them were likely busy, and absorbed in their own affairs as residents of the monastery usually were.

Annette was definitely no exception, with her magical studies deepening, and her fascination increasing with earnest, she was definitely aware that she had inadvertently ignored some of her friends’ greetings while in the halls while buried in a textbook. (Or worse, recovering from a spill resulting from said lack of attention to her surroundings)

Regardless, that was no longer what Annette would allow herself to focus on. After numerous conversations with her professor reminding her to take it easy, as well as pointed comments that indicated to Annette that she was in fact, neglecting her friends, she was here to rectify this.

I love animals, but I can’t say they like me back. All the really cute ones like squirrels or birds run away whenever I run towards them. Bunnies! Bunnies too. They all seem to be so scared of me. But I can’t help it! They’re just so cute, and sometimes I just forget about my volume when I see something cute. 

I guess I could get a pet fish... They can’t run away from you if they’re in a fishbowl!

Mercedes pulled a cookie sheet out from the stone fire and placed it gently on the counter top. The cookies on top of it were still nice and hot. The chocolate in them was soft and almost gooey if you bit into them at the current state. Mercedes always had a knack for baking and she loved doing it for her friends especially.

It had been awhile since her and Annette had a moment to sit down, eat some sweets and talk. She turned and smiled to the small ginger friend. She had known Annette for the largest portion of her life. She had been through a lot with her and she was happy to see her smiling face.

“So, Annie, what have you been up to? I know the professor has been sending you to focus on other things that Faith and Reason, are you enjoying it?” Mercedes sat next to her friend and waited on the cookies to cool down some. She would happily let Annette eat them once they cooled down.

“Lots of things have happened since we last had a talk like this, it’s felt like years almost.” Mercedes gave a playful chuckle. As if the gap of 5 years not speaking to Annette wasn’t hard enough. She was happy that she could be reunited with her best friend after all this time.

“Mercie…” Annette sighed, resting her face on her hands, and gazing into her soft blue eyes. “I’ve been thinking about you so much! Every day, even! Every time I practiced my faith magic, or entered a cathedral… I regret not keeping in touch.”

Annette’s cheerful smile turned into a wistful one. Ever since the fall of Garreg Mach, she had been alone all over again, a feeling she hadn’t felt since she had enrolled in the School of Sorcery. Before then, it was just her and whatever attention she could pull out of her bedridden mother.

But back in Fhirdiad, everything had changed. It was overwhelming of course, but Mercie was there! Mercie would help her get used to it every day until she was no longer anxious around the hordes of students at the Academy that threatened to swallow her up.

It was funny. Whenever Mercie walked back into her life, she no longer felt alone. And facing her now, she was truly horrified at herself for letting Mercedes go like that. Annette’s eyes well up with tears. “I’m so, so, sorry, Mercie!” Annette sobbed.

Mercedes’ eyes softened some and then gave a small smile. Gently pulling Annette in a loose hug, she stroked the back of her head, playing with her hair. She knew that Annette felt lonely, and she regretted not being there for her in those dark times. But Mercedes needed to take care of certain things.

“Oh Annie… I’m sorry that I left you alone for all that time. I know you don’t like being alone… But it’s better now right? We’re together again and I am not leaving anytime now.” Mercedes backed up and rested in her chair, folding one leg over the other and straightened out her dress some.

“So much has happened Annie… The professor is back, war is in the near future…” Mercedes paused and sighed softly then, looking over to the window. With Annette here, Mercedes could easily tell her best friend about all her worries and troubles. 

“And… I have found someone I think I want to settle down with. But, after the war… No time for devotion with relationships with the war going on.” Mercedes looked back to Annette and brushed some of her own hair from her face and chuckled.

She pulled out her handkerchief and gently wiped Annette’s eyes then of her tears. She was the person to take care of Annette despite anything that happened between the two of them.

Annette held her best friend close. How sad she was that she had missed these wonderful moments in Mercedes’s life. She wished her own time over the past five years had been as lovely as it was now, with Mercedes holding her tight and her best friend’s familiar scent washing over her  like waves on a beach.

Annette’s time since the beginning of the war had been spent caring for her mother, whose mental health had been slowly deteriorating after her father had left. She couldn’t bear to tell her mother that her father had been at the academy with her five years prior. She was worried about how her mother would react.

That gave Annette no shortage of things to talk about when caring for her mother. Annette would always recount her stories about her and Mercedes. Annette’s mother, having met Mercedes before, loved hearing about Annette’s friends, but truly showed joy on her face whenever Annette would mention her best friend.

“Mercedes,” Annette mused. “One day soon, could we travel back home? My mother misses hearing from you. It’s been a while.”
