Do you guys ever think about how the Fire nation is seen as the only faction that went crazy after the avatar left when really, every faction was driven to the extreme version of themselves without Aang?

The Fire nation was just the most obvious because without someone to guide them fire did what it does best, spread. Fire is the clan of Power so they let it consume them, they could not have power without taking it from others which is why it became a problem for all the other factions.

Earth, the people of Substance, were also out of control. They clung to their traditions and fought every change Aang tried to bring to them. Places like Ba Sing Se were able to exist, a stale fortress that literally killed to keep things the same.

And the Water clan, the people of Change, were consumed by their flexibility. Spreading their people too thin over the world, forgetting culture they lost their community. They threw their warriors into war, chasing just the slimmest chance of a change in circumstances, which is how great tribes like Katara and Sokka's lost their strength.

Basically what I'm saying is, everything did not change when the Fire nation attacked, the big event that caused all the chaos was the avatar leaving. Fire sought Power, Earth clung to Substance, Water could only Change. All the factions became the "extreme" versions of themselves, fire was just the easiest to see.

Imagine going to school, and this new kid gets brought in by the cops, and is funny, has poorly received banter with the teacher, argues with said teacher about historical accuracy during a pop quiz, floors a kid without laying a hand on him, consequently gets pulled into the rector's office with both his weird parents, they then throw a dance party which gets broken up because some little besom grassed, they leave never to be seen again. Then a few months later you find out that was the Avatar.

the mcu doesn’t seem to address how expensive living in new york is ( i know daredevil does but lbr folks a little damage isn’t going to make a difference when actual superheroes live next door ) and i don’t understand this at all like do u not understand the sheer and glorious craic that awaits you here?? civilians rooming with heroes or villains or vigilantes? either being totally oblivious or entirely in the know? sb being interviewed by the police and “oh, loki? u mean the fucker who ate all the cornflakes this morning? y e a h, i know him.”

a single parent w a small child and the small child become great pals w this new roommate who keeps waking him up at night, who has all these cuts and bruises, but that’s okay bc he has band-aids with spider-man on them, and one day the police show up bc “have u seen this woman?” and the kid KNOWS it’s nice lady natasha, but he’s like “no, dad says i can’t talk to strangers”

a young journalist who’s constantly under pressure to reach deadlines and they’re usually tracking one particular powered individual and hey doesn’t her roommate look super familiar?? and one night they’re about to head off to patrol the city when they see her crying at her desk and they go over and look at the title quietly and then “you know, i think his role during the blip was more focused on preventing riots and looting” and suddenly this journalist is getting amazing reviews and in return they treat their pal to a really neat new supersuit bc “u might go to a cosplay” but she KNOWS

this elderly couple living in a crime-riddled neighborhood and they get this new housemate and they look an awful lot like that villain from the TV, but they don’t say shit, and one day one of the husbands is about to be mugged when the villain emerges and he’s still quiet and struggling but thanks to the love and care from his new friends, he’s willing and able to fight for better reasons now, and u best believe that the men about to attack his friends are going to be in for one hell of a fight

a college student struggling with a workload and schedule and clinging to coffee to stay awake but then their new roommate arrives and they seem kind of exasperated but then slowly shit gets easier, bc his professor gives him an extension, his classes balance out, he’s not sure but the coffee seems to be decaffeinated lately, and while this wrecked superhero is trying to get their little buddy to sleep so they can go save the world, the student is improving so much mentally and physically and emotionally that the benefits are absolute.

“i’m doing laundry today, i’ll take urs if u want” “no, i got… i got stains…” and this little old lady smiles kindly at her dear new housemate and pats her cheek like “it’s okay dear, that’s the trouble of being a woman” and does she know that the stains aren’t hers?? maybe, maybe not, who knows, not her, that’s for sure!

basically give me civilians living w heroes/vigilantes/villains and just protecting them or watching out for them or helping or correcting them tbh bc that’s a trope i love and support w my whole heart tbh
