Board games. 

In Raven Rock, Dr. Singh was part of a board game group. They’d get together every Saturday afternoon and play a board game. Usually cycle through different games so there’d be variety each week. (One time early on when Singh was Nathan’s supervisor, he invited Nathan to the weekly board game in an attempt to be friendly and mentor-y. The game was the Fallout world equivalent of “Risk” and Nathan was never invited back.)

After he joined the Railroad he doesn’t have time for board games.

♡ tell everyone about the ghoons (ferran, obv)

in case people need a refresher, ferran was a proto-Enclave pre-War spy who ends up a ghoul and then a non-feral Glowing One because even as a ghoul he has to be Extra. and @gwinnetts and i share a headcanon that ghouls feel somewhat drawn to Glowing Ones, like it’s a big ghoul-specific charisma boost. (and there is canon for ghouls, including non-ferals, being drawn to radiation, thinking that radiation feels nice, warm, etc.) and ferran was extremely charismatic before he was a ghoul. 

also, ferran’s alignment is chaotic selfish.

so with that setup, now to talk about the ghoons:

in the commonwealth, ferran becomes something like the chief administrator/chief financial officer of the Gunners. he’s not their leader, but he manages the business side of the mercenary group. this makes him fairly wealthy by wasteland standards and he has 4 ghoul bodyguards/goons. ...we started calling them ferran’s ghoons. 

ferran intentionally sets the ghoons against each other, intentionally does things to try to make them jealous of each other, so they’re always competing with each other for ferran’s attention. partly because he thinks that keeping them competing with each other will mean that they’re always trying to one-up each other in displays of loyalty and usefulness. and also because ferran craves adulation like its an addiction and will manipulate people to get it because he’s a terrible person.

(I was really tempted to leave it at that, just to be obnoxious, but that would be bad.)

So, details. For Enclave multimuse, I occasionally think of adding Colonel Autumn because he’s important to the Enclave and also it’d be interesting to explore his thought process for how he ends up diverging from President Eden to the point of actively undermining Eden’s goals. Autumn is almost like a foil to Elder Lyons in that regard, because Autumn’s ideas are a massive challenge to what Enclave ideology has been up to this point. It’d be interesting to explore how he got there.

I also sometimes want an Enclave OC who’s a civilian and also not a scientist. Like an Enclave Project Coordinator or Enclave Housing Specialist. Or Enclave Human Resources Assistant. Because I like playing with the faction as a society, and there’s no way that 100% of this society are soldiers or scientists. Someone’s gotta process the promotion paperwork and handle the personnel misconduct disputes. (Fallout 2 showed Enclave civilians. Even though Fallout 3 didn’t show them, they must exist. Just like even though we don’t see children at Raven Rock, they must exist there, because the Enclave has been there for over 30 years. People gonna fucc and have kids and since the Enclave doesn’t allow outsiders in, it needs people to have children. ...and I just went off on a tangent, but back to the point: I want more Enclave variety.)

Character Stuff:

Dr. Alexander Singh’s Old World ancestors were Sikh. 

There’s a Real Life large, billion-dollar federal contractor that does security for federal government buildings and facilities that was founded and is run by Sikhs and employs many Sikhs. Dr. Singh is descended from some individuals who worked for a fictionalized Fallout-world company roughly analogous to that. Even 5 to 6-ish generations later, his family tends somewhat towards jobs in security, MPs, that sort of line of work.

I headcanon that the Enclave created a relatively homogeneous culture out of what was initially somewhat more diverse, through the very heavy emphasis of the “American!” part of identity to the exclusion of anything else. Specifically a suburban middle class kind of American culture. There’s also heavy social pressure towards a vague ecumenical American Protestantism with a dash of prosperity theology. (”God bless the Enclave!”) Over the course of just a few generations, his ancestors were pretty thoroughly assimilated into the Enclave culture blob. And so when he was named “Alexander” as a baby, his parents didn’t think about or consider the irony of giving him the same name as a European dude who invaded India. They just liked the sound of it and read in a baby book that it meant “defender of men” and thought that was cool. The family heritage reduced to origins as Enclave security.

So you keep telling me, is on the tip of Riley’s tongue. Not that he means Jared, specifically, since they just met, but… He’s heard the sentiment, if not those exact words, over and over again ever since he was brought to Raven Rock. It makes him just as uncomfortable now as it did the first time they said it.

“I… uh. Thanks.” Riley rubs the back of his neck, self-conscious. He knows he has Pre-War training, but… He never really felt like he was that great of a soldier. And he knows it’ll only be a matter of time before they find out for themselves, so maybe he should say something…

… but then they might not help him find Shaun, once this… new war is over. All he can hope to do is train more, make himself better, make himself useful, before he blows it.

“I hope I really can be of help.”

whether it’s your warm embrace, your unwavering reliability, your smile that says “welcome back”, your motif is the home. your the equivalent to coming out of the rain to the fire on and your slippers waiting by the door. your uncanny way of making people feel alright, you’re treasured in these trying times. i respectfully request you take care of yourself, the world will never been as kind to you as you are to it. anne lammott said “lighthouses don't go running all over an island looking for boats to save; they just stand there shining” and though unconventional, lighthouses are inhabited and your cup runs over with generosity. because you probably don’t hear it enough, thank you.

whether it’s your turbulent nature, your flash quick mind, or the air of unknown about you, your undercurrent is the lightning rod. you are somewhat unpredictable, but if we unravelled we’d see you know exactly what you’re doing, but it makes you feel less vulnerable to pretend it wasn’t planned. some people stay back from you, but others would follow you cross country, for the very same reason. they don’t know enough about you. the difference is in who wants to learn more. keep your golden nature, it’s exciting, but don’t be afraid to admit what you know. matshona dhliwayo said “lightning strikes but does not roar”; your bite will always be worse than your bark, keep that close to your chest.

“Hey, tiny girl!”

Diane runs up to Elle and hugs her. She can’t remember Elle’s name off the top of her head, but she remembers Elle the person if not the E-L-L-E, but names are just labels and people are so much more than that.

“You’ll never guess who’s here.” 

Dramatic pause.

“That guy!” The pause might have been Diane trying to think of his name, rather than for drama. Names are difficult. Little bits of data flashing by and then gone and her mentat mind going too fast to notice that they’ve flown away and they aren’t important enough to slow down and pick up off the side of the road her racing thoughts are traveling down. But Diane points to a man with an unusually tidy beard for the wasteland. He’s dressed in an old world suit.

“A new subject was brought in a few days ago.” Dr. Singh glanced at the chart as he walked with Nathan down the hallway towards the subject’s cage. “The subject is a male in his 20s, excellent physical health but non-compliant.” 

They reached the cage. Nathan tilted his head curiously. The subject was the first wastelander he’d ever seen. He looked surprisingly human. Even knowing logically that most mutations were subtle, he’d still half-expected scales or extra fingers or green-tinted skin.

“This is the preliminary assessment procedure,” Singh passed a small binder to Nathan, “I’d like you to carry out the tests. It will be good work experience for you.”

Nathan took the binder and flipped through the first few pages. “How do I manage a blood draw if he’s non-compliant.”

“You’re supposed to be intelligent; figure out a solution.” Singh wanted nothing to do with any of this.

The hydraulic hiss and stomp of power armor and a stream of swearing muffled by a helmet microphone indicated that Lieutenant Regan Williams was back from patrol. The reason for the swearing became obvious once she came into view and Captain Lone could see the battered and freshly scorched state of her power armor. When she yanked off her helmet she looked even more murderous face-to-face than when she was masked by the cold and hostile metal stare.

“Where the fuck is Kennedy? Fapping to Yankee Doodle? I tried to radio and got fucking dead air!” 

“What happened?”

“Fucking Brotherhood ambush!” She jerked her chin towards Richter and snarled. “Who the fuck is that?”

“Lieutenant Williams, this Lieutenant Brian Richter. You’ve been ordered to report to Adams, so he’ll be taking--”

“Fuck!”
