“Oyster Dress”

Alexander McQueen, a British designer and a 1992 graduate of Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, has been hailed for his challenging perceptions of the role of fashion in political, social, and cultural criticism. His collections are often cohesive thematic interpretations, alluding to dramatic media events (the “Highland Rape,” a 1996 runway consortium of tattered dresses and bloody catwalkers) inasmuch as aesthetic or artistic movements. Credited alongside peers such as John Galliano with the return of artistry to couture in the 1990s, McQueen is one of the most conceptual fashion créateurs to clothe the runway in the early twenty-first century and continues to be celebrated for his love of tactile exploration and dramatic visual representations. A number of gowns in Alexander McQueen’s “Irere” collection of spring/summer 2003 appear to be poetic renderings of a disaster at sea. While a similar dress appeared colored like the plumage of a tropical bird, this gown of sand-colored organza recalls the mille-feuille ridging on the surface of a shell. The hem of the skirt, like the wavy lip of a giant mollusk, further emphasizes the seashell quality of the gown. But unlike Aphrodite, who was born in the foam of the sea and borne to shore on a scallop, McQueen’s beauty is a bruised pearl encased in a deconstructing oyster, the tumbled survivor of the violent action of waves.

In Alexander McQueen: Genius of a Generation (2010) author Kristin Knox explains McQueen’s ability to captivate the spectator:

“For McQueen, fashion was not necessarily a means for self-expression, but a force to facilitate the opposite, much more akin to the role of the 19th and 20th-century painting and sculpture: to compel the wearer or beholder to surrender to the fantastical and sinister world of which McQueen was the sole artificer.”

In the case of the Oyster dress, the “fantastical and sinister world” was one surrounded by water and resurrection. The Irere collection lived up to McQueen’s reputation, and the Oyster dress became one of the most memorable moments of the collection because of its ability to evoke a sense of fragility and empowerment all at once.

Alexander McQueen A/W 1995: “Highland Rape”

Highland Rape is the most controversial runway show of McQueen’s early career. While he claimed that the inspiration for the show was about England’s rape of Scotland, many critics were convinced that it was romanticizing the rape of women. Always sparking controversy, Lee sent models down the runway in torn clothing, posing in a distraught way; it was all too easy for reviewers to believe that the models were portraying women who had been raped. However, McQueen maintained that he was not a misogynist, and that they had misunderstood the historical reference.

Lee told Time Out Magazine in 1997: “[This collection] was a shout against English designers…doing flamboyant Scottish clothes. My father’s family originates from the Isle of Skye, and I’d studied the history of the Scottish upheavals and the Clearances. People were so unintelligent they thought this was about women being raped- yet Highland Rape was about England’s rape of Scotland.”

McQueen was clearly tired of designers romanticizing Scotland, which he saw in a much more cold light. He slashed lines open in the pieces, and tore apart lace in a violent way that expressed how much Scotland (and its people) were ravaged by the wars. He used his own family’s tartan for many pieces, and would continue to do so in later shows, including 1998’s Joan, and 2006’s The Widows of Culloden. While Highland Rape was seen at the time as angry and violent, this was the show that launched Alexander McQueen into fame, and would spark the heads of LVMH to choose him as John Galliano’s successor at the house of Givenchy.

Ducati Superleggera 2 del año 2018

El resurgimiento de la empresa italiana de motocicletas comenzó en 2011 con la Panigale, la principal oferta de motocicletas deportivas de Ducati. Un año después se lanzó el modelo S, con un enfoque en el rendimiento en pista, y en 2013 llegó el modelo R, la motocicleta de mayor rendimiento jamás fabricada por Ducati. La R utilizaba un motor Superquadro Desmodromic de 1198cc que generaba 194 caballos de fuerza a 10,750 RPM. La Superleggera llegó ese mismo año, con el objetivo de reducir el peso lo máximo posible.

Limitada a 500 unidades, la Superleggera se convirtió instantáneamente en un clásico entre los motociclistas y coleccionistas. Lanzada en 2017, la Superleggera 2 de 215 caballos de fuerza fue la culminación de seis años de desarrollo, siendo la versión final del motor de cuatro cilindros en línea de Ducati antes de hacer la transición a su motor V4.
