DEAR RESEARCHERS OF TUMBLR
You know whatās awesome?Ā Research.Ā You know whatās not awesome?Ā Not being able to get access to research because itās stuck behind a paywall and you donāt belong to an institution/your institution doesnāt subscribe to that particular journal.
FEAR NOT.
Here is a list of free, open access materials on a variety of subjects.Ā Feel free to add if you like!
GO FORTH AND LEARN SHIT, MY FRIENDS.
Directory of Open Access Journals- A compendium of over 9000 journals from 133 countries, multilingual and multidisciplinary.
Directory of Open Access Books- Like the above, but for ebooks.Ā Also multidisciplinary.
Ubiquity Press- Journals covering archaeology, comics scholarship, museum studies, psychology, history, international development, and more.Ā Also publishes open access ebooks on a wide variety of subjects.
Europeana-Ā Digital library about the history and culture of Europe.
Digital Public Library of America- American history, culture, economics, SO MUCH AMERICA.
Internet Archive- In addition to books, they have music and videos, too.Ā Free!Ā And legal!Ā They also have the Wayback Machine, which lets you see webpages as they looked at a particular time.
College and Research Libraries- Library science and information studies.Ā Because thatās what I do.
Library of Congress Digital Collections- American history and culture, historic newspapers, sound recordings, photographs, and a ton of other neat stuff.
LSE Digital Library- London history, womenās history.
Wiley Open Access- Science things!Ā Neurology, medicine, chemistry, ecology, engineering, food science, biology, psychology, veterinary medicine.
SpringerOpen-Ā Mainly STEM journals, looooong list.
Elsevier Open Access-Ā Elsevierās kind of the devil but you might as well take advantage of this.Ā Mainly STEM, also a linguistics journal and a medical journal in Spanish.
Also, remember ā there is a wide world of researchers out there, most of whom donāt give two figs about paywalls. Let people know what youāre having trouble accessing, and youād be surprised how quickly a copy will find its way to your inbox. And if you do belong to an institution with a library, check out their interlibrary loan system, which is a more official way of getting things from behind a paywall at no cost to you.
Bolded. Let me know if thereās an article you want and Iāll see if I have access to it.

Did you know?
Okay, these are important. Way more important than some English Hillbilly trying to hard.
If anyoneās trying to learn a language Iāve recently discovered this company called theĀ Language Pod Company and it is so much better than Rosetta Stone and itās completely free (unless youād like one-one-one teacher-student help then itās like $25 a month which tbh you shouldnāt really need because they make it really clear in the lessons). Itās super easy to navigate and it even gives you a history of the language. There are audio and video lessons. Real-life situations and different speakers. They even write the letters for you because I know sometime itās hard to learn to write in a language that doesnāt use the same alphabet that youāre used to. Youāre welcome. Ā

How I make the comics
Iāve been asked a few times how my comic making process works now that Iāve switched to penciling digitally, so Iām going to do a write up about that. As always you can find all my blogging about making comics on this handy tumblr post.
So, previously I made comics completely traditionally. Hereās a write up of how I used to make comics. All of the pre-drawing of the comic still applies: I still do my thumbnails by hand, scribbled in a notebook.Ā
Now I draw comics on a Cintiq, in Manga Studio. Hereās what my initial desktop looks like:
Thatās Manga Studio, and my template comic page. Itās 10 by 14 inches, and the blue lines are my safety, trim and bleed. All important artwork and dialogue/speech bubbles should go within the safety.
I draw with a red pencil (Pencil-Layout Red) from the Frenden Manga Studio brush pack. I canāt remember which pack I bought, but thereās only 3 on the Frenden site and Iām sure theyāre all great. Frenden does great brushes. Why red? Itās just easier to see than blue. For some reason I have a hard time sketching with a blue pencil on a screen, although I still draw with blue on paper. I donāt know why that is.Ā
And hereās a rough comic page! Ta da! Itās pretty messy. I used a lot of reference to draw Nameless City. This is page 97, so a right facing page in the published book. Therefor the bleed on the second panel is bleeding off of the page and not into the spine of the book.
One of the best things about Manga Studio is its perspective tools. Iām not an expert in using them, so I recommend looking up someone who really knows what theyāre doing if you want to know more. I mostly just use the 1 and 2 point perspective grids to figure out where the floor is in certain panels, so I can more easily place characters within space. Very basic stuff, but it has made my life so much easier. I would marry Manga Studioās perspective grids if I could. :D
Then I clean up the page a bit. Eventually I hope to eliminate this step, because itās time consuming. All I do is adjust the colour of the pencils to blue and trace over the figures I feel need improving with red. I usually only do this with main characters, an attempt at keeping everyone consistently drawn (lol).
This is what it looks like with the rough pencils turned off. I never had to do this when I drew traditionally, and I think itās because Iām not yet used to inking over digital pencils. People ask me about inking and how IĀ āfind the right lineā to ink, and the answer is I just do. But for some reason I canāt with my printed out digital pencils. So until I become more accustomed to them, I need to do clean up. It sucks! Just an extra step I want to eleminate.
Then I bring the file into Photoshop and prepare it for printing. The pencils always print darker than the look in PS, so I put down a layer of white overtop the pencils and adjust the layerās opacity to 55%.Ā
Hereās the paper I use for printing, same paper as Iāve always used: Strathmore Bristol, smooth surface. I cut down these 17 x 14 inch sheets to 17 x 12 so theyāll fit in my printer.
My lovely printer! I do adore it. Itās an Epson Artisan 1430, the size of a keyboard and itās been great. I printed out 200+ pages of blueline comic pages on only two cartridges of ink.Ā
Itās printing!!!
And done! Now for inking.
Unfortunately I didnāt take a picture of this page when it was half-done, but hereās the finished product. I donāt ink my borders because I canāt draw a straight line, even with a ruler. :D Borders I do in Photoshop.Ā
I use a brush for inking. These are the brushes I use: Raphael Kolinsky watercolour brush, sizes 0, 1 & 2. I use the 1 for most of the page, the 0 for finer details and the 2 for larger areas. Anything thatās a straight line is inked with a pen. I tend to use Faber Castel pens, usually a small or extra small.Ā
So thatās pretty much it! After I finish the page I scan it and prep it for printing in Photoshop, which is pretty boring.Ā
The main question I get when I talk about my process isĀ āWhy donāt you ink digitally? Then you wonāt have to scan.ā I would very much like to eliminate scanning from my process, but at this point, I really love inking traditionally. Itās the part of the comic-making process that I enjoy the most, and I also think that traditional inks give my comics their unique look. Iām just not ready to take that step and ink digitally for my graphic novels, although I have done it for shorter comics. Maybe someday, but not now. :) For now, this is how I work.Ā
I hope everyone enjoyed the post, and feel free to shoot me any questions you might have.Ā
