LIGHT AND SHADOW REPRESENTATION GACHIAKUTA 169 PARALELS (SPOÄ°LERS ALERT)
To be honest I wasn't planning on write seperately but when I wait the translation of chapter on my own language (yep english is not my mother tongue) I realized something both the chapter's stunning art and paralels.
Gountess and Too Lily are grateful to Rudo that "release him from the one who had him bound" and "allowing her to Lily's magic without retraint". The page that Lily bowing down to Rudo. At the first sight, it seems like just classic Kei Urana pages, but there is more. This pages theme are light, especially second page's the shadowing really emphasize that. It sybolizes escape from captivity and regaining freedom. The light shines from behind Lily onto Rudo's face. And Rudo's impression is pure relief. He didn't lost someone who help him. But it is just silence before storm.
He know someone was help him to defeat Mymo (neck slash what I am talking about). There was someone supporting Rudo from behind. Rudo is not alone this success. Then he look at HÄ°S shadow. Not THE shadow but HÄ°S shadow this distinction is important.
Enjin lies beyond where Rudo's shadow falls. He is the one who sacrifices himself. A price was paid in the shadows for this light. The light is gountess who reach his freed, and Lily who manages to rescue her friend while the shadow is Enjin who pays the price of victory for by using the Time Walk. And between them is Rudo, who is neither close to the light nor to the shadows, until he realizes Enjin's condition.
This page can be my favorite one because of Enjin's conditions representation (I may have examined it for at least 10-15 minutes). Half of his face is shadowed and covered in blood. He's on the verge of unconsciousness, but his eyes are open, staring straight up. Not any emotion on his face. NO. ANY. EXPRESS. And when you now how much Enjin is expressive person, it is alarming. Just look at these:
This is the moment Rudo has seen Enjin at his most unexpressive, and that must be frightening for him.
Also there is one more thing that I want to say. Enjin's eyes never drawn closed, even he is sleep. It can be physiological or psychological thing but that's not what I want to emphasize right now (I'm planning to write aboout it, but I might write sooner if it generates interest, I don't know.).
We know Enjin has vision of future not for himself but for children. Even for them he stay in shadows. We know he try to take care Rudo because of Alto saved him. But I don't believe that he is not do if there is Riyo or even Amo instead of Rudo. May be it is again symbolizing again or it is not I don't know. However in my opinion, we can interpret this as someone who, from the shadows, watches over everyone, especially the children, trying to pay the price that needs to be paid and taking on burdens they shouldn't have to bear, at least according to Doll Festival Arc. Even he say in that page to Rudo.
I won't delve any deeper into this and will return to the current situation. Still I want to show.
Rudo was at the intersection between light and shadow. Gountess gives Rudo a burden he must not carry on, at the same time we just saw him in current arc. Tecnically he is foreigner, still Rudo is reuineted him to the light. On the other side, Enjin is the architect of Rudo's life of on the Ground. He's the person he knows best on the ground. However, he is stay in shadow and willing to shed blood to Rudo's innocence (If he hadn't intervened, Rudo would have torn Gountess to pieces).
I don't add here parallel between Enjin and Regto right now but it doesn't change it is agonizing because Rudo chose his closest relative (perhaps a father or older brother figure) for the sake of strangers without even realizing. I don't say it is wrong or right saving Gountess. Main purpose was that. I just wanted to talk about how fitting and beautiful the symbolism in the drawing style and shading is, and how it actually extends into the characters' inner world in this arc.
He stay too much between light and shadow. When he chosse running in the shadow. He was faced with the sacrifice that victory demanded...
(Even it can be relate with Rudo's curse. But again I can be write later about it.).
I admire Kei Urana's ability to create drawings based on the situational emotion and the feeling she wants to convey, and her use of different styles.
Still, I'm not sure anyone can handle such a chaotic cliffhanger.
