Coffee cups are made up of paper from outside but inside there is a thin layer of plastic (Polypropylene) film which protects your coffee or any liquid from seeping into the paper and keeps your drink warm. The two-layered covering cannot be recycled unless the materials are separated, which is impossible to do by bare hands. This kind of design, however, makes recycling the product super difficult, especially since the layers are often very thin and stacked tightly on top of one another. It’s just not cost-effective and far too time-consuming for a recycling factory to separate and recycle each piece.
