“yunli is so sexualized”
SHE'S A DANCER
dancers don't wear a lot of clothing depending on their type of dance
often they will have light and flowy pieces to make movement easier
for example - belly dancers
belly dancers don't wear a lot and the skirts will generally have a slit or two in them
obviously her outfit has been changed to fit the xianzhou and isn't going to be culturally accurate or anything like that but considering that the xianzhou is based on china, her outfit likely has roots in Chinese culture
HI. A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS. BUT YES. IT HAS ROOTS TO TRADITIONAL CHINESE DANCE !!!!
people who are complaining that she is sexualised don't realise that this is completely normal. i grew up with chinese dance performances. yes, they're often danced by younger girls and will show skin. and no, it's not because it's an inherently sexual thing. get your head out of the gutter, that's just a dancer's body and a performance outfit.
i implore a lot of you to look more into chinese culture instead of choosing to be ignorant ! look up tang dynasty dances ! look at their outfits ! watch some of the performances !
from someone of chinese diaspora, please PLEASE understand that not everything that shows skin is inherently sexual. please stop trying to bash designs of chinese characters without understanding the significance of their designs.
THANK YOU
everyone who's complaining about her outfit just sounds like a school dress code tbh
well that, and it's this kinda narrow-minded thinking that gets us where we are today, where people are genuinely unable to believe that there's other unique cultures outside of whatever they have that do not obviously subscribe to whatever expectations they have of how an obviously chinese individual should be written/drawn
i can go on and on about how some players in this fandom do not clearly interact with the cultural aspect of honkai star rail. i can show you how a badly researched version of a chinese character is written like. i can tell you that even with the copious amounts of information that the game gives its players, individual players still somehow get things wrong.
but yes, it's wrong of us to show a midriff. it's wrong of us to not give yunli shoes as part of her outfit. we should've given her at least socks! (which, by the way, doesn't happen for chinese dance. dancers are taught to run on tiptoes to minimise noise, and socks make the wood stage very slippery, so most avoid socks especially if they don't want accidents, and those happen very frequently even without socks. i have friends who cannot continue to dance because of these accidents.)
the truth is, i don't think people care at all that there is an actual culture behind this. this could really just be people just wanting a reason to dislike something because it's different to what they know. a lot of this ignorance sound closer to racism rather than just ignorance to me.
i love your thoughts, don't get me wrong! but it feels just a lot more than just a "school dress code" when this is a reoccurring theme. if it's not the clothes, it's the names. if it's not the names, it is the repeated references to the culture. if it's not the repeated references to the culture, it is the fact that we keep going back to "space china" in a chinese-made and owned game (like if you hate this aspect of a game so much, maybe save some breath and move on. find a new game that can make you happy.)
this isn't an attempt to praise mihoyo for every decision they make obviously (the whitewashed native american boothill was a fumble i cannot comprehend and i know this is a huge talking point of why mihoyo bad that people will raise against me if they wanted to), but the whole whatabout-ism that comes with: [player say "hey fandom. that is kinda weird of you to say." -> fandom says "you're defending a RACIST CHINESE COMPANY."] never gets old.
obviously, this isn't an accurate depiction of everyone who plays honkai star rail, but it's based on some of the reception i've seen over the year that i've played it !
I don’t think Boothill is Native American. HSR isn’t like Genshin where every region is based on a real-life culture. It’s science fiction. I think Boothill is mostly just based off western conventional cowboys that swear, shoot guns, and be rowdy. Pop culture.
Even if you count individual planets as based off of real-life cultures, the similarities are fairly obscure and general. Herta Space Station doesn’t have any real-life cultures. Just office work culture. Jarilo-VI is vaguely based off of Northern Countries like Russia, Finland, and Norway. Penacony is based off of the intrinsic concepts of dreams and escapism, with some features of capitalism sprinkled on top.
I don’t mean to bring any bias or disrespect to the conversation, I just don’t think real-life culture needs to be projected onto every character. We all have our own identities that don’t have to be tied to cultures.
If my observations are correct, I'd say even Genshin's regions aren't based on just a single country. In fact, I'd say that in all Mihoyo games, the only time a setting isn't made of multiple different countries and cultures is when it concerns Japan and China, which is always just Japan or China.
On the other hand, the cn name of Boothill's home is 阿尔冈 阿帕歇 or Algonquin-Apache. Furthermore, the IPC calling the locals 'savage and uncivilized cowboys' as well this line 'You are permitted to use military force and bring civilization to this world', with emphasis on bringing civilization to savages, should be very reminiscent of the concept of 'the white man's burden' which was often seen during the colonial era which saw the suppression of natives, such as those in America. Another thing in Boothill's story is about how the ipc came to mine a 'black ore' which was used to 'create devastating weaponry' may also be a reference to the uranium mining done in The Najavo nation for The Manhatten Project. (this may be a little of a stretch, especially since no one nuked The Najavo nation)
