Problematic because: "Claude is a charming idealist with genuinely good goals - he wants to end Fodlan’s isolationism and reduce prejudice between Fodlan and Almyra - but he’s also a secretive political operator who spends a lot of time keeping people at arm’s length, hiding major parts of his identity, and treating trust as something to be rationed out when it becomes useful. His reasons are sympathetic, especially because he’s faced prejudice from both sides of his heritage, but it still means the people around him are following a leader who often knows much more about his own stakes than he tells them. The bigger issue is that he’s a wartime leader, and his plans involve real armies, real civilians, and real political consequences. In Three Houses, he’s often the most reasonable of the three lords, but he still relies on secrecy, manipulation, strategic half-truths, and letting other people underestimate him. In Three Hopes, he forms a pact with Edelgard, and he sets out to kill Rhea and break the Church’s power because he sees it as an obstacle to Fodlan changing. So he’s problematic less because he’s cruel and more because he’s very comfortable deciding what other people need to know, when they need to know it, and how much risk is acceptable for the future he wants. He’s trying to make a better world, but he can be evasive, calculating, and politically ruthless, especially when he thinks honesty will slow him down.
Propaganda: 1. "I like Claude because he’s one of the few “schemer” characters where the game lets him be genuinely likeable without sanding off the uncomfortable parts. He’s warm, funny, curious, and probably the lord I’d most want to have dinner with, but he’s also constantly holding something back. There’s always this sense that he’s smiling at you while mentally running three escape routes and deciding whether you’re safe enough to tell the truth to."
2. "he is genuinely trying to improve the world. like his dream is good. he wants people to stop being racist and isolationist and stupid about borders. he’s usually the most normal man at the war crimes table. unfortunately he is also a man who looked at “maybe i should open up emotionally and trust my friends” and went “or i could construct an entire political personality and reveal information only when absolutely necessary.” he’s not just the chill meme lord deer boy, even though fandom can flatten him into that. he’s calculating. he’s suspicious. he has a very real kindness in him, but it’s mixed with this survival habit of never letting anyone see the whole board. he wants connection and keeps choosing strategy. he wants a world without walls while personally living behind about twelve of them."
Problematic because: "His methodology is test and treat just to see what happens, often leaving his patients to have a lot of medical crises until he finally figures out what's wrong. He reads up on other cultures and religions to insult them more accurately. He hires a black man because of his criminal record and proceeds to call him oldtimey racial slurs. He defaces a jewish employee's photo to look like hitler. I could go on for hours."
Propaganda: "The show does a good job showing you why he's like this, from his childhood to the injury that disabled him. It is his show, after all, and it wouldn't be so popular years later if it wasn't interesting"
