Freedom of Speech

I see this term thrown around a lot by people saying racist, islamophobic, transphobic, or sexist things. Let’s break down what “freedom of speech” actually means. It’s a law, in fact in the US it’s the first amendment in the Constitution. It basically means that you have the right to gather and protest/speak out against your government and establishments. It also means that “you have the right to remain silent”. Which is one of the rights spoken to you by officers when being placed under arrest.

Here’s what “freedom of speech” does NOT mean:

- You do not have the right to defame a person. (Harmful slander that can damage ones reputation.)

- You do not have the right to hate speech in any form be it verbal, vandalising property with hate speech, or threats of violence. (Racism, sexism, transphobia, islamophobia, or ableism.)

- You do not have the right to infringe your personal political or religious beliefs on others.

This is not freedom of speech. You’re deliberately misusing the law and the purpose of the term to be an asshole. Stop. So as you can see there’s a big difference between “freedom of speech” and hate speech. One is a law to protect your rights and the rights of others and one is abusive to others.

First, you misused the word infringe so that sentence doesn't even make sense. Also you DO have the right to preach your beliefs under the first amendment.

Second, hate speech is also protected under the first amendment, you may not agree with it but it is. The only speech that is not protected is slander, speech that incites violence, and speech that is intended to put people in immediate unnecessary danger ("Fire!" in a crowded room).

I’ve never seen men pick apart other statistics as much as as the statistics on what percentage of rapes, sexual assaults, and violent crimes are committed by men. So much energy is put into the denial of any possibility that they could be responsible. It was the NISVS 2010. They found that the male/female rape victimization ratio was about ¼ over the lifetime numbers, assuming men report at the same rate, which they don’t. Men also said that 79.3% of people who made them penetrate were women, which indicates that about 1/5 victims are men, and 1/6 rapists are women.

Hardly what I’d call “overwhelmingly male”. In fact, that’s a higher ratio of female rapists than the ratio of are black people in America.

Most of the people who have been killed and harmed by men’s actions, historically, are…other men.

Those links actually undermine your case. Logically, men should be more scared of other men than women are. By your own evidence, men are bigger victims. By your own logic, you should be trying to help them.

It really gets on my nerves when people at my school act like feminism is a bad thing, when they don’t even understand what feminism actually is. All they think about are people like T.E.R.F.S or the women who preach that men are shit. What they don’t realize is that is not feminism. What feminism actually is is a movement which tries to define the social interactions between, and the general social status of, men and women and then forms campaigns based on that definition.

The conclusion that feminism has reached is that men have had it ‘better’ than women throughout history and that this has been of mens doing. This is clearly not an accurate version of history, since while there are indeed areas in which men have had it better there are also areas in which women have had it better. However, feminism talks about gender equality in this very much one sided, black and white manner. Basically every feminist I have ever encountered believes this to be a reasonable version of the truth. Even those who claim to simply want equality for everyone generally hark back at some point to this idea that it is women (and only women) who have suffered throughout history.

While I am aware that there are many good people in feminism who genuinely want equality, this core belief in a lie cannot be ignored. While individual feminists may not be ‘bad’ they are supporting a movement that inherently is bad. They are supporting a movement whose the core thinking states that men have taken the better roles in society for themselves and left women with the dregs. They are supporting a movement which lies. Telling lies and then trying to sculpt society around those lies is a bad thing. It is counterproductive to gender equality at best. At worst it is actively disparaging and hateful towards men.

No, I do not for a second believe that all feminists actively hate men. But the bitterness and resentment feminism breeds in young women, borne out of this idea that men have actively tried to keep women down throughout history and to this day, is hateful in itself. This is why I think feminism is bad. Feminists may not all be TERFs and they may not all preach that men are shit, but that seed has been planted somewhere in their brains by the lies feminism has taught them. Men are held as the guilty party in the misogynistic society feminists believe we live in, as defined by patriarchy theory. It is a few short steps from guilt to blame to hatred. That is why I will continue to say that feminism is bad. I hope that you can engage with the people at your school and show them the more positive side to feminism that you believe exists. But I hope also that you will consider the reasons why they think feminism is bad, which likely stretch far beyond the existence of TERFS and out and out misandrists.

The MRM is about problems men face on the grounds they are men. So I guess what I don’t understand, is why you think an adjective suddenly means these people are no longer men, and don’t have the same issues as what you seem to consider the only real men in the world.

Does being gay mean they now have a shelters to go to when they are raped? Does being poor mean they will no longer face bias in family courts? Does being black mean they will no longer face unfair sentencing? Does being disabled mean they have access to some super secret spending on research into prostate cancer? Does being Jewish mean they are no longer mutilated at birth on religious grounds? Does being Muslim mean graduate and pursue higher education at the same rate as women?

These are all issues men ace universally, that the MRM does talk about, at length. But for some reason you think those people aren’t real men who would benefit from any of those things being corrected. Do you think a suicide line for men is going to screen calls to make sure they don’t accidentally keep a gay man from killing himself? How do you propose programs to keep boys in school and encourage them to seek higher education make sure they accidentally provide that service to a poor black kid?

It’s not a “defense of MRAs” It’s a legit issue. Men are killing themselves of at close to 4 times the rate women are. Plus the whole “women attempt more” is smoke and mirrors to try and minimize and make the issue of men killing themselves seem less important. Something you seem all to happy to help with.

What do I mean it’s smoke and mirrors? Because the source intentionally interprets the data to make the talking point. The source of the claim attempt 3 times as often is this page. Which has a funny little clause at the bottom:

“494,169 people visited a hospital for injuries due to self-harm. This number suggests that approximately 12 people harm themselves for every reported death by suicide. However, because of the way these data are collected, we are not able to distinguish intentional suicide attempts from non-intentional self-harm behaviors.“

So what does that mean? It means they are guessing at best, and willfully misleading(lying) at worst. They say it right there, because of the way the data is collected there the woman who came in with a broken toe after she stubbed(non-intentional self harm) it is counted as a suicide attempt. It is given equal weight to real attempts like downing a bottle of sleeping pills. It also doesn’t account for women who survive making multiple attempts.

Please let me know the exact number of men who have to kill themselves in comparison to women before it’s okay to try and help them? it’s already at least 4 to 1. Does it need to be 10 times higher than women? Let me know exactly how many men add up to the value of a single woman in your eyes so we know when it’s okay with you personally to help suicidal men.

Honestly this goes back to toxic masculinity. Men are being emotional and opening up as non-manly and won’t talk about things. Men are more likely to keep things bottled up. It’s time to normalize men’s emotions. Men need to know that it’s okay to ask for help, it’s okay to talk about issues, and it’s definitely okay to seek professional help when things get bad. Women are characterized as more emotional and are quicker to talk about their issues. Men associate softer emotions as being weak. (At least that’s been my experience. Obviously it’s not all men but this mindset does exist and can be toxic.)

To be honest about 80% of the guys I know have been in some form of abusive relationship and none of them seem to have an understanding of the fact it’s abusive. They’ll tell me a story about an ex partner and when I point out that it’s not ok they make some rationalisation. So I ask them if it would be ok if a boyfriend did that shit to me and their answer? A clear and blatant example of this is in “Why Him?” that I saw over the weekend.

There’s a scene where the wife character (Megan Mullally) gets high and wants to have sex where the husband (Bryan Cranston) is entirely disinterested. The House AI takes it upon herself (voiced by Kaley Cuoco) to put on music, fill the room with his favorite perfume, and try to help Megan seduce him.

Except he’s explicitly saying no and pulling away from her. Again. And again. And again. Doesn’t keep her from straight-up trying to rip his pants off. Or from (off-screen) trying to blow him. Or squeezing his head between her knees and telling him he’s 6 inches too far away. Or from grabbing his hand and physically forcing him to grab her chest.

It’s a full 5 minute comedy scene that’s literal sexual assault. And it’s a bit disgusting.
