❝ it shouldn’t.. if it does, the meds aren’t working. by the way, what is your tolerance to morphine? ❞ abby’s eyes remain fixed on emma’s arm, which is gripped firmly with one of her gloved hands while the other hand wields a butterfly needle aimed for the inside crease of emma’s elbow. drawing blood from unconscious patients is a lot easier than doing it from patients who are awake & alert. however, abby has adjusted to the difficulty during the early years of her residency, so she learned how to reassure the weary people that have questions regarding the amount of pain a blood draw should cause. nevertheless, abby’s poor attempt at a joke results in a cringe as she glances back at emma.  ❝    that was a joke. you’ll feel a small prick and then some pressure, but it’s not too bad. i’ll make sure to do it quickly.  ❞

emma didn't mean to be difficult. she really tried not to be, she just also hated everything that came with hospitals, well everything except her brother and sister in law. they were, for the most part, exempt from her distaste for the whole situation. that being said, her free hand attached to the arm who's blood wasn't being drawn was clenched into a ball at her side. "it's probably low," emma replied with a chuckle, "but my tolerance for tequila is better." the joke did help, and she knew abby was joking even though she responded half seriously. "i trust you, i promise," emma assured her, even as she looked from her sister in law's grip on her arm up at the ceiling.

"and so, subduction is when one plate slides underneath the other and goes like this-" emma set down her cup to demonstrate the two tectonic plates meeting and one going underneath the other with her hands. "right, and that makes underwater volcanos and underwater vents and around these hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the ocean we get crazy life that starts to form because it's so hot down there. there's crabs and there's the tube worms and-" she was rambling and she couldn't really tell if her companion was interested or not. "i'll shut up, i'm not at work and you probably didn't actually want to know about plate tectonics. you can tell me if i'm being boring, you know."
