Low - Effort Worship

I've been pretty down lately due to...various reasons...so! I decided I'm going to post what you can do when you're just down in the dumps or possibly don't have time. I think a good reminder for us all is that, in Hellenic Polytheism, everything centers around reciprocity. We do things for the gods, they do things for us in return! Not everything will be a giant Aphrodisia or Gamelia celebration. Without further do, here's a list of things you can do that I consider low effort worship (I recognize everyone will have different abilities and different ways of worship!): 1. Invite the gods to be around when you're doing something. This could be something as intense as a metalworking workshop and inviting Hephaestus, or just playing Assassin's Creed and inviting Athena (something I've done many times). How to invite? You could go for a full blessing - such as "white-armed Hera, be with me for this duration" - but when I'm in true low effort mode, what I will do is, "hey, wanna watch this with me, Dionysus?" (or whoever I'm inviting!) It's a great way to involve worship in your daily life. 2. Pray. Just take some time and send a prayer to the gods; whatever that looks like for you. Most recently, my prayer was literally just "Lord Zeus, help me". It can be as simple as that! 3. Whatever you're doing, similar to inviting the gods, dedicate it to that deity! Got a picture you're proud of on HappyColor? Say it's for Eirene! High score in a video game? Bam, it's for Hermes! You don't even have to say it before the activity, you can say it just after - like, "hey, this top score is for you". 4. If you really can't do anything - like full on bedrest - just thank the gods. Thank them for what they've given us; what they've done for you. It doesn't even have to be out loud. The gods can hear you, wherever you are and whatever you're doing. Take care of yourselves. Your mental health and physical health are important. Praise to Apollo, god of medicine, and praise to all the Theoi.

I ask that you grant me your blessing in the week ahead and the many trials that shall be presented to me in my classes. Grant me the strength to push through, the wisdom to hold my tongue, and the knowledge to ace my various exams. Guide my pencil as it marks the paper, and let it rest upon the correct answer, more often than not. Grace my gradebooks with A's, and my study sessions with focus and precision.

Be with me, Shining Apollon, as I attempt to complete these challenges. Embolden my heart and mind. Thank you for lending me your ear in this, my time of need.

Does anyone ever feel like they're worshipping wrong?? Like I see people with their cool alters with statues and flowers and roses and massive crystals & candles. They do these long prayers and say hymns for the gods they worship.

And then I look at mine and it's silly anime-like drawings I've done of the gods + bead bracelets & prayer beads. Yeah I have stuff like tarot cards and crystals and some candles but it just not as professional. I don't do any rituals before I offer them stuff, I just kinda say "hey, this is for you, hope you like it" and I don't do proper prayers, I just talk to them normally.

Am I doing this shit wrong???

i think there is a lot of merit and connection that comes from worshipping the “proper” way, with the epithets and cleansing and whatnot. but i do it this way because i want to! i feel closer to the ancient worshippers and all the current ones across the globe when i do my best to replicate the “traditional” way of prayer and offerings. but i’m still learning!

people can yell at you to worship “perfectly” but ultimately, we are not the ancient greeks. they behaved in the context of their time period and we will behave in the context of ours! and i think expecting that all greeks were perfect worshippers is holding them to an impossible standard. they were human too; i imagine hundreds of years ago there were devotees feeling exactly the same way as you now.

all this to say i think you’re worshipping fine, as im sure there were many greeks who didn’t worship to their time period’s standards. if you do decide to go down a more traditional “proper” route, do it for the kharis, experience, and education it will bring, not out of fear or worry 💞
