ELISABETH DAS MUSICAL — Original Vienna (1992)

*Costume Designers look away it might be painful 🫂
Random Elisabeth rant, but why are all the recent productions so light? And I mean, literally. I feel like the recent (2012 - present) productions (respects to the ones I don't know about) are so lit with stagelights and it doesn't suit the vibes of the musical.
It isn't necessarily bad, but I kinda miss the times when you only saw floating figures with blue lit faces. Maybe not all like the 1992 original when you could see maybe a bit too little, but I miss when Death emerged from the shadows with his mysterious aura and everything was dark like Elisabeth saw her own life. I miss my blue blue lights, I miss the times when you could see shit and the moments of light became so much more important amongst the heavy darkness.
I suspect the visible lighting change in recent years has a lot to do with technological advancement in theatre tech.
The 90s and 2000s productions were all lit exclusively with halogen light which you have to put a colored gel (essentially a colored piece of plastic) over to get any other color than a warm white. But, the more colorful you wanted a light, the less of it you would actually get to visibly show up (especially when you want to use a blue and want it to look blue, not just a cool-toned white). The lights look great IRL, but generally weren't good for making recordings, used a lot of electricity, had a tendency to quickly break, crackled during shows due to the bulb naturaly making crackling sounds when heated up and most lights (excpt for manual follow spots) could only have one fixed position and color for the duration of the entire performance.
Nowadays, most theatres are switching to LED lights exclusively, because it's more economic electicity-wise and it's less manual labor due to the technicians not having to climb up before each show to check the focus on each light and swap out any used up color gels. These lights can be controlled purely from the control panel and can have any color possible alongside effects. The disadvantage is that LEDs are naturally a lot brighter then halogens and in the beginning, the colors they could produce were very distinctly LED light colors (due to the first ones only having RGB color chips). And it is true that most light designers now want the viewers to actually notice the lighting, what it does and their work, so the use of the dimmer setting has kind of been used sparingly by most.
But I do slowly see more LED theatre light makers actually tweaking their lights to be able to replicate similar qualities to the halogen while still being LEDs and having all their advantages so, who knows, maybe in the next 10 years, theatre lighting will look completely different.
