My personal headcanon for Grace's gender/sexuality/romantic orientation is that he's aspec for all of them.

He's comfortable with he/him pronouns because that's what people use for him by default. But he'd be fine with she/her or they/them or whatever else. It's not a big deal to him. Grace is just Grace. He wears what he's comfortable in (or what dress code was at his earth teaching job), and he's just....Grace 🤷

Gender roles are as silly and stupid as thinking all life MUST be water based. Like, why? Who made the rules that said that? That's dumb. There are infinite possibilities in the universe so why do people think gender is so finite and strict? Makes no goshdarn sense if you ask him.

And romance? Ehh. He's tried it. He's tried dating men and women and other non-binary people but 🤷 sure he liked them. But like.... romantically? He's not sure he knows what that feels like or if he's capable of it. He really just wants to love and care for someone but it doesn't have to be romantic, does it? Like if it was? That'd be okay too. But he's done trying to pretend he feels this weird different way about romantic partners that other people do. Like it's special and extra and he can't be fulfilled without it? Okay sounds fake. Can't he just have a best friend he feels that way about? (This one is 100% based on my own experience as an aromantic person. I am demiromantic tho and I do have a bf who I love so very much. But I love him the exact same way I also love my platonic soulmate bestie. The only difference is I wanna kiss and bone my bf)

And sex? Grace could take it or leave it. If he had a partner who wanted it, okay sure he's down. If he had a partner who never did? Okay sure that's cool too. He occasionally gets himself off but it's more for stress relief than any real sex drive. He doesn't think about it really unless other people bring it up.

Basically the way he feels about all of them is "🤷 okay 🤷 I guess 🤷 whatever 🤷 that's fine 🤷"

Has anyone had this cursed idea yet of an Eridian whose made of natural asbestos?

Grace will be fine, as long as he doesn't breathe in any fine particles of it, he's not in any danger and since they're incompatible to each other's environments they're always in exosuits when they interact, either on Erid or in the biodome. Grace has a bit of a terrible sense of humor so he names this Eridian Dusty.

Once Dusty gets to know Grace better (Dusty is also a scientist so they work on a couple projects together) he eventually asks Grace why Grace called him Dusty since he's not any more particularly dusty than any other Eridian, in fact, there are many who produce much more dust than Dusty does!

And Grace feels a little bad explaining where the name came from and Dusty is, unfortunately, a bit traumatized by this.

"DUSTY IS POISON TO GRACE. QUESTION!?"

"I mean technically, yeah, but only if I breathe in your dust and that's not going to happen since we're always in exosuits so it's okay"

"IS GRACE SURE. QUESTION!? DUSTY IS WORRIED! DUSTY CAN STAY FAR AWAY IF GRACE NEEDS!"

"no. Hey buddy, Dusty, were friends, right?"

"yes. Grace friend. Dusty stay far, far away, bye!"

Obviously they talk through it some more and Grace gives Dusty some papers on asbestos poisoning to read and how the exosuits are actually perfect PPE, and Dusty isn't as scared to spend time with Grace again. But for a hot minute there Dusty really thought he was going to be the death of his friend 😅 whoops~

Edit: I'm not making light of cancer btw. My mom died of cancer, it's awful and I hate it. Ive just always found it fascinating and weird that breathing in dust from a rock can give you cancer. And I find it really unfortunate how beautiful naturally occuring asbestos is. It's not like the rock is particularly TRYING to kill us, it's just a rock. And it's not as if Dusty is a carcinogen to Grace on purpose. He's just a sweet little nerdy science rock.

This was my original idea for Dusty btw.

And then I decided I wanted to make them both a bit annoying and extremely sweet. So I landed on "wife" guy who can't shut up about how much they love their mate and how talented and pretty and smart and clever their mate is, etc etc etc. And unfortunately they kinda can't read the room when everyone is a bit tired of hearing about their mate.

Grace can see why Rocky thinks it's annoying but ultimately finds Dusty super endearing and would love to meet their mate eventually.

First time all three of them are working on a project together, after Dusty leaves for the day but Rocky is staying behind for some bro time he immediately just starts complaining:

"Dusty so annoying. Rocky could talk about Adrian that much too but no one care. Dusty need to shut the fuck up sometimes. Talk about something else."

"Aw I dunno, bud, I think it's kinda sweet."

"Maybe first time Rocky heard Dusty ramble on but Rocky known Dusty for long long time and Dusty never know when to be quiet not talk about thing no one else care about."

"Hmm yeah I guess I can see how that would be annoying. I didn't know you knew Dusty so well."

"Rocky Dusty grew up together. Dusty been annoying since pebbles."

"Geeze Rock, if you hate him so much we don't have to work with him"

"Rocky no hate. Just find annoying. Dusty not mean. Very nice. Just annoying."

"Hmm I see. Personally I think their mate sounds really cool though. I get why they talk about them so much. I'd like to meet them"

"Oh Grace should! 🎶🎵 Very nice! Very cool! Grace would like!"

"wh...why are you so annoyed when Dusty talks about them then!?"
