I have such a soft spot for Pahanin. I see him as this charismatic, cocky guy, always smiling, who knows everybody in the City and will direct you to some friend that owes him a favour whenever you need something fixed or found or looted. Loud and expressive, quirky, always carrying a notebook, a keen ear for gathering stories and memorable punchlines; hiding his many insecurities behind mock-smiles and brilliant laughter. The guy who plays the guitar at campfires. Trigger-happy, sometimes too much, people call him childish and annoying but you can’t really bring yourself to dislike him because he’s like a puppy: loud and irritating and adorable. And it hurts him, a bit, because he wants to be accepted, because he wants everyone to like him and to like one another; he’s a node in a network of contacts to which each thread eventually trails. Lives for the thrill, collects precious moments like snapshots - a lake trip, a night at a cheap bar, drinking looted vodka in some ruins staring at the sky. The jester of the team–yet when danger comes, he’s suddenly sharp and quick and skilled and you realise you’ve underestimated him terribly. I place a lot of myself in my view of him.

And then he doesn’t get a happy ending, all of his playfulness and juvenility dies in the Vault and he returns an empty shell. And we know he’s never getting better because Yor snuffs him out like a candleflame, and he dies afraid and broken and never laughs again, not truly; because he’s seen too much, lost too much, never got the time long enough to heal. Thinking about that excited and smiling guy who tossed a candy wrapper at Praedyth before they entered the Vault–and knowing it will only get worse from there, that he will only be maimed and paranoid and never happy again up until he dies–it makes me feel things.
