heated rivalry has an interesting genre dissonance thing that i've been trying to put my finger on for a while
it's to do with how it's perceived in the mainstream as being revolutionary for breaking conventions in the romance genre, while people who have any familiarity with pwp fic at all know it's completely conventional by the standards of that genre
so in effect, the revolutionary thing about it is not the story itself, it's the fact that it's being adapted for television, where the depiction of loving and intimate gay relationships that's so commonplace in fic is unrecognisable in the current media landscape
cool that it's specifically the transposition of genre that's revelatory
