Tips for winning arguments from a competitive debater - Part 2

Find a common ground and go from there. For example, “so we both agree that healthcare is an important thing, right? Where we differ is just how to achieve that?” The less you make your opponent or yourself feel like an antagonist to the other, the better. And because you have a mutual goal or belief, they’ll be more comfortable with admitting if they were wrong, or agreeing with you. 

Basically: Don’t be Ben Shapiro.

Speak slowly and steadily. Use both hands to gesture at a relaxed pace. This will make your opponent perceive you as less of a threat, and they’re more likely listen to what you’re saying instead of just looking for holes in your argument. It also gives you more time to think
