This book, the work of several years by @traditional-with-a-twist, was a reward for their having won the kitty in Obiyuki Madness a couple of years ago. I was happy to hold off until they finished.
But then I couldn't decide what to do with the cover, and since I was making two copies, I figured I'd try new things. 1) a new bookcloth I hadn't tried before, and 2) a half binding with corners.
Well, the new bookcloth tried to kill me. The iron-on vinyl just would not stick - I had to re-cut letters several times (this was my replacing the e, and I think I got it lined up pretty well!) and gave up on half the flower design. The purple is a pretty color, but it is not high on my list of materials I want to work with again.
The half binding with corners was fun, actually - I got to math at it. The underlying board is salvaged from unwanted library booksale books - I figured out the scale of what I wanted the corners to look like directly on the boards. The paper to the right helped me figure out the finished size of the corner pieces (shown cut) and then worked as a template so I could get them applied evenly. The paper (right-hand picture) has to have some overlap, so I could get that sized against the boards too.
The interior has more embellishment than I usually manage to put - there are multiple stories as part of the series, some with chapters (and one brief play!)
These were two books from my 2025 Binderary which I'm happy to have gifted to the author.
Trying something new! I've had this idea for a long time - what the Voltron Legendary Defender characters would look like in the Avatar: Last Airbender world. It's also been fun developing ATLA prequel concepts.
Thought the best way to continue developing ideas would be to start an ask blog! where I can share ideas for the concept and characters' backstories.
Shallura Week 2020 - Day 7: WIP Day
I decided to interpret WIP a little bit differently XD I think it turned out really cute– it’s probably my favorite out of them all.
This Shallura Week was so much fun! I really enjoyed drawing one of my favorite OTPs again and getting creative with the prompts.
What a great spin on a WIP prompt; I love the joke!
I can’t stop finding fantastic details in this piece; it’s too pretty:
Shiro’s and Allura’s expressions are so lovely; I love how you designed Shiro’s arm with the Altean lights and the Voltron symbol. Allura’s hair looks so long and flowing and soft. I also love their clothes! Shiro’s look like a more regal take on his casualwear from the show. Allura’s dress is fantastic, so elegant and also very comfortable-looking.
I imagine this is somewhat early in Allura’s pregnancy if she’s about to have triplets like your other Shallura babies art.
During midterms at the Garrison, Keith was the type of student who could look at the review packs once and pass the test with flying colors. Hunk is somewhat the same, except he would look over the review material multiple times to make sure he has it down. Shiro and Pidge wouldn’t need to look at the reviews because they already had a strong hold on what they were doing. Lance, however, was different. He has to study, or else he will definitely fail. He makes flash cards, highlights important information, copies down diagrams millions of times, and even had Hunk make him an audio recording of the material that he can listen to while sleeping. Lance tries extremely hard to get the grade, some subjects come a lot easier to him but others not so much.
Allura is a goddess of the hunt and Shiro is a devotee. He lives his life in her service, not realizing that he’s in love with her, until she offers him immortality. Shiro is old and on the verge of death and she restores his youth (or maybe dying young of his disease?) He knows his service was not perfect but she loves him anyway.
He’s lying in bed weeping with frustration because he can’t leave an offering when she comes to him. He always offered seed cakes shaped like mice. The main offering to Allura is fire dancing the night before a hunt. Shiro was one of the best and most athletic before his illness broke his body down.
Allura is a star goddess. The fire dancing represents the movement of the stars.
New idea: Shiro is actually the worshipper of a rival god or goddess. His illness causes him to get wounded, and he loses his place as a fire-dancer. Keith is taking care of him but the laws of society say he should be left to die. Shiro feels like he deserves death. Maybe he does? Maybe he committed a crime? Obviously he killed someone but why? I want him to experience grace - Allura accepts him into her service when no one else wants him. How far do I have to go to make him undeserving - maybe he killed her followers in war like St. Paul
Shallura Week 2020 - Day 2: wings ; bloom
I decided to go with the prompt “bloom”, then proceeded to take as much artistic license with it as possible. XD I’ve been really interested in vintage fashion lately, so somehow I decided to make it Edwardian. Both Allura and Shiro’s outfits are based on fashion plates from the era (somewhere around 1906 to 1910 or so). I had so much fun drawing this! Even the lace, which made me want to scream. XD
Shiro looks so cute in that outfit! Allura’s lace looks beautiful. I particularly love all the folds in the parasol. Your attention to detail on the flowers and the buttons is incredible!
This makes me think of a Hello, Dolly AU even though the film’s set about a decade before the fashion plates. There enough characters to fill out the whole cast!
Hehe…since it seems to be a point of some confusion, necking / to neck is old-timey slang (particularly popular in the 1920s) for making out, before making out replaced it in common parlance.
Takashi Shirogane is the number one Black Paladin. He’s been through a lot in his life, yet always manages to pull through and stay positive. He’s caring, courageous, talented and a really good space dad. Through his story, he’s always been faced with challenging tasks and disabilities but he’s never given up on himself.
My wish for Shiro in the next season is that he could connect with the Black Lion one last time.
Headcannon for Shiro: Shiro had a tough life, even before Voltron. He learned that he cannot give up on himself no matter what and that’s what pushed him through the Gladiator Rings, leading a group of teenagers, dealing with the bad days of PTSD and what kept him sane in the Astral Plane.
Additional: He loves chocolate ice cream. Don’t judge him.
6 Days Left
Coran Allura . Shiro . Hunk . Keith . Pidge . Paladins
I’ve been sitting on this for a while, but the series is finally over and , so here’s my take on this particular unanswered question:
In the first episode, Allura remembers trying to convince her father to form Voltron and fight Zarkon.
So the million dollar question is, who was going to be the Black Paladin?
I really liked this idea in these two posts: Alfor, being the second in command, would have stepped up to be the Black Paladin -- but he was too heartsick to do it.
That made me wonder, if Alfor had piloted the Black Lion, who would have taken his place in the Red Lion?
Well...
In the Arc of Taujeer, when Keith is gone and the team is desperate to form Voltron, Coran seems to think he’s a great candidate for piloting the Red Lion. It’s something he’s clearly thought about before.
What if Coran, as Alfor’s right-hand man, was planning to be the Red Paladin? -- until Alfor decided to split up Voltron instead and hide it.
I like this parallel, because I know someone working on the show mentioned that Coran sees a lot of his younger self in Lance. They have a lot in common--and Lance also had to step up to become the Red Paladin after the previous Red became the new Black.
