2 x collages using imagery from the Sight and Sound magazines and Beyond Appearances exhibitions book.
The first collage uses 7 hands, all positioned on the edges of the paper pointing inwards, as if trying to grasp or take hold of something in the middle of the page. I wanted the positioning of the hands to create a feeling of overwhelming and disorder.
The second collage has a woman with a camera and a vase of flowers behind a woman with her hands behind her head, who is hone positioned behind a man. I wanted three layers of people, the first person in the foreground being ‘the self’; the second layer being the projection of ‘the self’ out of itself, to watch, observe and analyse; and the third being the fear of any audience, another layer of observation - and one that I can’t control. Additionally, the vase of flowers acts as a reminder of beauty, elegance, ‘perfection’ - inspired by the symbols used in vanitas paintings to remind the viewer of their mortality and worthlessness of pleasures and worldly goods in the face of death.
More digital collage experiments and manipulations in photoshop, using Colour Halftone to achieve the ‘dotted’ texture of the hands and then layering over cut out words from the magazines. I then used the ‘wave’ distortion tool to create the swirling shapes in the third image, and the lineal curve in the fourth image.
The colour halftone creates a depth of field, with the hands blurred and out of focus in the background, and the distorted words in the foreground and in focus. The distortion to the shape of the words creates a sense of disorder and movement - reflecting the disorder I feel due to my higher self-awareness and sequential discomfort, fidgeting and difficulty in feeling present.
The words themselves, ‘An Imperfect Woman’ are also chosen to depict my high standards for myself, desire to be in more control/at peace with myself- which I struggle to attain. I feel I have lots to improve on (especially as a perfectionist) = imperfection.
More digital montage and manipulation of the hands from the front cover of Beyone Appearances. To begin with I tried arranging the hands in a way where they could all touch/interconnect with each other and create a feeling of movement and direction flowing from one end of the image to the other - one of the ways in which I wanted to experiment with giving a feeing of movement to still images of hands, suggesting the theme of ‘fidgeting’.
Whilst experimenting with some of the tools and affects i had never sed before I came across the ‘blur’ tool which gave me this almost x-ray like, and surreal style to the image. through further exploration of the different tools I then used the ‘wave’ tool, altering the wavelength and amplitude of the effect to create the distorted, ripple like finish. I also really liked the the rough, lineal texture to the details of the image, and the distorted scanography effect I could gain with the tool, as I myself don't have one to use at home.
note to self - could also explore movement through using collaged hands in a gif!
Dora Maar’s Untitled (Hand-Shell) 1934 was a source of inspiration for using hands in a surrealist context.
