Itās funny how in the last two seasons of Doctor Who, the overtly political episodes weāve had have been this:
Islamophobia is correct (the Zygon episodes were said by Moffat to be parallels to Islamophobia, and then in the episodes themselves, they portrayed as all Zygons as evil terrorists, even the ones that say theyāre trustworthy)
GMOs are evil and will end all life on Earth (thatās very explicit, youād have to have not watched Pyramid at the End of the World to miss that message)
Fake news is a big problem (I donāt know if this really counts as overtly political in the episodes though because there is no mention of it at all? But apparently Whithouse says thatās what the Monk trio is about? Maybe itās tackled in the next episode, since we havenāt gotten there yet)
Also, Harness and Moffat are the two that are responsible for most of these episodes.
Boy do I love it when my shows turn into Republican propaganda.
I miss when Doctor Who was more left-wing than right-wing.
I dislike Moffās writing as much as the next Whovian, but this is off. First of all, itās a British programme written by British writers, so unless you mean the writing is anti-monarchy (Iāve found the programme to be very pro-monarchy, to my distaste), itās not about the USA Republican party because people generally donāt think about supporting foreign political parties in their work. Moffatās an arse and probably a Tory but I doubt he swings as far right as the USA Republican party. Iām not really disputing the first and third bullet point because I donāt have thoughts on these atm. Iām a scientist but I didnāt get the impression that the recent episode was anti-GMO, I just think it was used as a plot point rather than a moral lecture. Iād only be able to interpret it as anti-GMO if I were anti-GMO myself (as confirmation bias).
1. Right-wing ideologies exist all over the world (unfortunately). I donāt mean he literally wrote it for the Republican party, but itās right-wing bullshit nonetheless. Trump was mentioned this season either way, though.
2. The Doctor literally told Nardole to search specifically for genetically modified bacteria used for crops (because apparently thatās what he thinks of when he thinks of dangerous bacteria). Thatās what GMOs are, genetically modified organisms (and people are mostly (incorrectly) scared of them in relation to crops). The point is that it canāt be used as a plot point though, because 1. thatās not how GMOs work, theyāre not going to kill us all 2. the show does not exist in a vaccuum, you canāt use a plot point that is based on peopleās real life illogical fears and then claim youāre not trying to play into those fears. You canāt haveĀ āGMOs are going to kill us allā as a plot point then say itās not anti-GMOs.
I realise now that we are watching the show from entriely different cultural perspectives. You would have to actually believe that GMOs had the ability to destroy the world, which is not a mainstream belief in the UK hence why itās hard for me to see this as propaganda as itās more like blatant make-believe, which I imagine it was intended as. As in, itās on the same unbelievability level as a hospital being moved to the moon.
Itās make-believe based on something that is real and is something people are largely afraid of (for no reason). Meaning itās propaganda, and is a purposeful choice.
Lie, nobody is afraid of the Statue of Liberty, so who cares if you make that into something that can kill you, but people are scared of GMOs, so playing into that fear is not just a coincidence. Especially since itās apparently in the middle of aĀ āfake newsā trilogy.
My original reaction post is because in my brain Iāve lumped GMOs into the statue of liberty category - my understanding was that no one was scared of them in the same way that no one is scared of the statue of liberty, hence why it appeared to me as make-believe when viewing the episode, not propaganda. Iām very willing to accept the idea that people might be scared of them (any other UK-based Whovians please weigh in, Iām just one person with one perspective) but this wasnāt a part of my understanding when I viewed the episode, this is new info. You said in the first post that āGMOs are evil and will end all life on Earthā was an explicit message, I am providing an alternative and entirely genuine perspective. I could well be wrong, but I donāt believe this was a purposeful choice because in my life experience no one is scared of GMOs and I doubt Moffat is either.

me: Iām drowning in job applications I need to send off and Iām getting outright rejected by every single thing I apply for
my kind, misguided friends: have you tried x? they are hiring. I know someone who works for y, maybe you could get a job there? ask for feedback!
me: you have misunderstood my problem entirely
all I want is to give and give and share all I have, but all I have is nothing. I imagined having a big house that I could share to those who have no home, but I am bordering on homeless myself. all my life I imagined helping those in need, but i never imagined being someone in need. my lack of greed has meant that I have no hoarded wealth to share. I rely on the goodness of others, a goodness which I so crave to be able to provide myself
doctor: why do you come to my lectures bill: iām gay doctor: i can see that but you havenāt answered my question

Nine and Jade were a beautiful pairing. Iād watch the hell out of many series of nine and Jade, wtf were they thinking killing her off??
His anger after she dies. He straight up kills Cassandra for it. Thatās a true ~dark doctor~. Rose even begs him to stop.
