Julius Huebner - Self portrait

Julius Hübner (1806–1882) painted his self-portrait at age 22 on a postcard-sized piece of cardboard measuring 13 x 10.6 cm. It is monogrammed and dated: "JH 1828 Düsseldorf im August". After marrying the sister of his friend Bendemann, Hübner left for Italy in 1829, where he reunited with his professor from the Berlin Academy, Wilhelm Schadow, and his classmates, Theodor Hildebrandt, Karl Sohn, and Bendemann, in Rome in 1830.
