SO U WANNA BE A POKEMON ICON MASTER. LEMME TELL U A FEW THINGS U NEED TO KNOW TO MAKE ICONS WHICH LOOK LIKE THIS:
in this tutorial i’ll show you how to make circular icons, standard icons, and square icons. ( this tutorial is extremely long, and may bore you, but i’m providing you with as much information as you need, and i promise you it’s really worth the length ! this is the second part ! )
alright, so since we know how to make circular icons, let's learn how to do square and standard icons! ( i'm not re-explaining anything, the first part can be found in the link on the word here above ).
first, we need to know the difference:
this is a standard icon. i call it that because the icon is entirely 100 x 100, and is the whole thing. therefore it doesn't really matter if it's a png ( though pngs have the best quality )
this is a square icon. it's a lot like the standard icon ( because it's a square ), however, there are transparencies, so it's not entirely 100 x 100.
standard icons are super easy to make, you just need to fiddle around with overlays and lines! here's a very simple one:
you can even make lil patterns for them or stuff. they're not that hard to make, and is the greatest thing to start with. they're so fun, too!

yeah well the real fun starts with square icons! now i'll show you how to make dotted borders, dashed borders, blah blah blah.
alright so start from scratch! now you can either do it the easy yet long way, and make a square and then erase it, or you can do the slightly harder way and do it by eye. it's harder mainly because of being equal. you want to make sure it looks nice on your threads, right?
so let's start with a new canvas:
basically you just want to do some lines with spaces in between. this would be dashed borders. make sure after making the second one, that you copy and past them onto each other so they're even !
now, dotted borders are basically just dashed borders but smaller.
tada! we have a basic border now! but you want to add on some spice, right? let's make a border around the borders now.
it's looking pretty cool so far! let's connect the borders together now, almost like stitches!
good job! square icons are really just your imagination! they're much easier than circle icons, and now that we actually have basic knowledge, it makes things 10x easier!
let's see what our icon now looks like!
wow ! it looks really nice, plus it's very simple. of course, there are a different amount of combinations. as i said, this is much easier than the circular icons, and with the basic knowledge coming from the circular icon tutorial, standard and square icons will seem like a breeze!

in this tutorial i'll show you how to make circular icons, standard icons, and square icons. alright so for this tutorial we'll be using the fucks known as nagi kengamine and amamiya hibiya. we'll be using icons i already made of them, and putting them into a formatted/bordered icon holder.
alright now let's start with the circular icons since they're harder to do.
**but, before we do anything, we have to get the basics down.**
for this to work, you're going to need either paint tool sai or firealpaca. you can get a 30 day free trial for sai, or pay for it ( it's a really good art resource which i highly recommend buying and is definitely worth 67 dollars ). from what i understand, firealpaca is free. ( you can also try this on photoshop, but i highly recommend saior firealpaca for the job. )
since i use sai, i'll just give you screencaps of my setup. first, you need to find the binary tool ( firealpaca also has one, it makes everything look like pixels ). that would be this guy:
my settings for binary tool are pretty standard but in case you want to know what they are if it's set differently ( i think it's the default though ), these are my settings:
this tool is going to be your best friend in making formatted/bordered icons.
another thing we need to know is how to use the binary eraser, which is really easy, you just need to click this little box:
this erases everything, but also in the brush setting. it's quicker and more efficient to use than the eraser, so don't use the eraser for erasing things. another thing you will need to do is utilize the scale tool:
these are really all the tools you'll need when making your fancy schmancy icons. ( of course your clever mind is going to help you ! ) also, firealpaca has a different setup, however still has the binary tool. please use that tool like your go-to man because there really isn't going to be a better tool for icons.
**a lot of these are cooler with transparencies, so it can show up on your theme, so make sure to save your icons as pngs ( will be further explained below ). save the border/formats as a psd. ( photoshop file ) so that you can keep all the layers when you want to make more icons**
but now that we've started understanding what to do, let's start with the circular icons, okay?
alright so it's really tasking and annoying to actually make a whole circle by yourself, so i find a circle render and paste it onto the 100 x 100 canvas, just make sure to scale it:
next, we decide were we want the circle, and how big we want it. to be honest, i'm not going to change it that much, but this is what i've got:
see now it's nice and centered, and it doesn't touch the edges of the blank canvas. now we start doing the fancy crap.
**do whatever you want, i'm going to do something a bit different, but i'll explain how to do the dashes and stuff with the square icons**
we're going to make the redish circle the place to put the icons. the black circle will be the outer-most border. another thing is, notice that fuzz around the icon? it'll look worse in a thread, so now we gotta go use our handy-dandy binary tool to paint over the fuzzed out part.
see it looks much clearer and looks better. unfortunately, it's very hard to pixelize circles, as pixels are essentially little squares, but you'll just have to keep fiddling with it until you're pleased. now i'm going to separate the two circles.
**this part is completely optional, but i think it looks nicer**
we're not going to be using the colour white ( though you can do that if you want ), but instead use our friendly binary eraser.
( aka this thing if you forgot: )
( make sure you still have binary selected as the tool, though ).
now it should look something like this:
so now i'll just make the outermost border be a little fade to black, using the theme of wannyapu's kagerou days pv:
( to do this i used a LOT of clipping group layers and multiple. aka:
these things. clipping groups make sure it only affects what you already have on that layer. )
now you can do whatever you want with your border, include making it a more interesting shape:
( to be honest, you really just have to add the corners and lines of a square to make it look like this, play around with it and make it your own. )
or you can add certain details, mine looks like this:
and that's pretty fancy-schmancy right there. now we add the icon:
now to make sure this happens, you need to have layers that look like this:
the striped one is the layer you constantly have to keep, that's what'll post it above the background you used to post your icon on. normal is the setting you have to have the icon at, and you need to make sure you're at the lowest level of layers ( aka the one titled "bg" ) before pasting, so that it pastes your icon above the bg, hence making it a clipping group.
now just scale it and let's see how it looks!
pretty damn awesome, huh? ( infomercial person voice ) but wait, there's more! we're going to use an overlay to make this icon look even cooler! ( i'll use another icon of hibiya in colour to show you the difference, too ).
alright, now just copy and paste your background above the icon bg layers, and begin working on it. you can make checkered overlays, diagonal, plaid, or horizontal or vertical ones.

set it to overlay. your icon will now look like this!
wait how do i make it transparent as a png?
when you save it as a png, this little box should show up!
naturally, the top option will be selected. you want it to be the second option instead, this will make your png transparent.
**HOWEVER!**
overlays will have different effects! for instance, what if we made the diagonal lines ontop of the red bg of the overlay darker?
it'll turn to something like this!
now it may not look like it, but they're very different! let's put the two look-alikes together to see what the difference is!
