its annoying that i didnt take screenshots of fubukis convo with gouenji before entering the aliea hq and then his last conversation w atsuya but. something i never quite understood when it comes to him, anime DID and real mental illness issues aside, is why the conclusion to fubukis arc was... merging with atsuya...
they make it pretty clear the whole game that the issue is that fubuki is dealing w survivors guilt re: The Accident and blames himself for the death of his family, which escalates with the aliea stuff into believing he should have died instead of atsuya because he thinks raimon need atsuyas skills more than his.
then when he tells atsuya this, atsuya forcibly takes control and pulls a little stunt pretending to join aliea just so he could face raimon and make them aware of the problem. shirou wanting to be atsuya is a bad thing. atsuya doesnt want this for him.
again, later after that, gouenji confronts fubuki (without shooting a fireball at him, which i appreciate), and the team eventually joins in, reassuring him that he is loved and valued by them as shirou... and then we have the final conversation between atsuya and shirou, which is about shirou finally deciding to face the present and go into the future as himself, letting go of the past and atsuya....
...or so i thought? because then just like the anime we have mentions of the merge. ??? but why??? why would you spend the whole game framing shirou clinging to atsuya and wishing for atsuya to take his place permanently as a bad thing and then... say that hes only perfect and whole if atsuya is completing him...
ultimately its just an issue i personally have w this and its more about the direction of his arc than trying to be more realistic abt mental illness. sorry. but i just dont understand. without the merge i think its a pretty solid conclusion. shirou finally feels free to be himself & starts taking initiative more + the past isnt shackling him to a singular position, both showing in his switching to being a forward as fubuki shirou. etc etc.
but with the merge it just makes it feel as if fubuki REALLY wasnt enough as shirou. that he couldnt be perfect by being himself. its just kind of a weird conclusion...?
