If y’all could stop trying to assault paramedics that’d be great

The abuse I have experienced both on an ambulance and as a medical assistant is just astonishing.

The stories I hear make me realise we are quite lucky as doctors that patients seem to suddenly put their nice face on as soon as they walk into our office. Except in the middle of the night in the ER, then all bets are off.

After the initial shock of my eye problems settling in, I found someone who told me I could do vision therapy to remove my micro strabismus and improve my depth vision. I was excited, until I heard everything that would come with it.

First of all, it would mean 1-2 hours of eye exercises every day for the next year. Becoming a neurosurgeon would definitely be worth 1-2 hours of my day. But, there is no guarantee that it will work. And the results would take at least months to show. During those months, changing my career path would become increasingly difficult.

Second, there is a risk of adverse effects. The whole treatment not working would be bad enough, but apparently it can also give complaints like double vision. Despite being willing to sacrifice a lot to become a neurosurgeon, I am not willing to risk double vision and the possibility of not becoming a doctor all together.

I have been figuring things out and have decided to try to go for Emergency Medicine. During all of my clinical rotations I loved the time I got to spend in the ER. I love the fast pace, quick decision making and the diversity of problems there. And the hours of an ER physician in my country are absolutely amazing compared to those of a surgeon.

Throughout my life I have started to believe that all things happen for a reason... Although I am not 100% over the fact that I cannot become a neurosurgeon yet (this will happen when I call to cancel my residency spot), I have found something else that could make me happy.

Do you know of any treatment for micro strabismus? Or could you ask your massive MD following? I finally got a spot in neurosurgery after 8 years of working my ass off and now they've found that I have very bad depth vision due to micro strabismus. I have been to 2 orthoptists, but both have told me there is nothing to do about it. I am not 100% ready to give up yet, even though I have started exploring other options. Tumblr is one of my last hopes :(

I have no idea. I’ve never even heard of it.

The past weeks I have been in suspense. I haven't been able to write anything on tumblr.

Yesterday I received the hardest news of my life: I cannot be a neurosurgeon. It has been my dream for the past 8 years. I have done everything to get there and even got offered a residency spot starting next year.

Now, it turns out I have a micro strabismus that cannot be corrected and that makes my depth perception very poor. I had been having trouble seeing well under the microscope and thought I needed an adjustment in my glasses. I never thought that it would end up being this.

Yesterday was my second opinion. I have sent out e-mails to 2 people that would know if there were a way to fix it, but I have little hope. If anyone of Tumblr knows any form of therapy (experimental, anything...) for micro strabismus, please let me know.

After 8 years of dedication and dreams, I need to find a new specialty. Fuck.

People don't understand why I don't watch the news. After what happened today in Belgium, I stayed in bed all day thinking about how I could help stop all these horrible things from happening. Coming to the conclusion that there is nothing we can do against these senseless acts of violence saddens me to the core. I hope everyone has a safe place to sleep tonight.

Stumbled across your tumblr and your last post comes off pretty judgmental of pts. Something to keep in mind. You're too early in your career to be jaded!

Sorry if it came off that way. I’m occasionally dramatic on Tumblr. It’s how I deal with the stress of daily life as a med student and all the crazy things that come across my path in the hospital.

I’m actually very forgiving of my patients. I can’t do details, but I’ve had a few patients that I’ve found sympathy for despite awful things.

The things that I have trouble with are lying when you know I know you’re lying (because what is the point? We both know you’re lying, and if I don’t know something I can’t treat you properly!) and a few things that trigger extremely negative emotions in me due to past experience. I won’t say what they are, but they’re morally reprehensible in most cultures and illegal in the US.

I still take exceptional care of these patients. I don’t actually mutter under my breath, I don’t carry it with me into the next time I see them in the hospital or clinic. I treat them with respect and do everything I can to treat them medically.

But everyone in medicine has their own baggage. We can do our damndest to leave it at the door, but there’s always that pesky hatbox you forget you’re carrying. Certain patients will rub us the wrong way, and that’s ok, because we are human. The best thing we can do is recognize our baggage and make sure it doesn’t impact patient care.

I had a patient a few weeks ago who really screwed with my head, to the point where I couldn’t look at him without wanting to punch things. I recognized my baggage. I asked my team for help, and they switched my patient list so I wouldn’t have to interact with him. In that particular inpatient setting, it wasn’t hard to do. And it was better for the patient because someone impartial was managing his care, and better for me because I wasn’t being bombarded with memories and emotions that made me want to curl up in the fetal position in the staff room and cry.

What you read as judgmental and jaded is me letting go of the negative gut reaction so I can go back and face that patient with no irritation or frustration. It’s my way of preventing myself from getting jaded.

I get it. Sometimes I bitch about patients to get it all out of my system and make sure I can treat them just like I would treat anyone else. Some patients can really get under your skin, but it helps to realize they're mostly scared or sick. And occassionally they can just be annoying.

Meeting my childhood idol did not go as expected... He groped my friend's butt. His demeanour towards her was strange the entire time they were interacting, but I thought it was in my mind. After the meeting was over, she told me he had grabbed her butt and actually squeezed it. There was no doubt about it: it was intentional.

This is a man twice our age with a gorgeous wife and 5 children. Someone I admired, but definitely not somebody I would want to touch me in a sexual way. He knew she is married and not interested.

What I might have found even worse is that my friend still admires him. She says he might have "just been drunk". As if that would have given him a green card to grope all the ass he wanted to that night.
