I’ve always loved Ray Milland’s portrayal of binocular vision dysfunction in THE MAJOR AND THE MINOR (1942). For some reason, I couldn’t get a good screencap of the scene where he does some of the vision therapy exercises I’ve done for a long time (with no results so far, but can’t hurt to keep trying). I’m sure I’ve made some pretty amusing faces in my day while trying to compensate! I highkey love that it’s a plot point without being played as a big tragedy, and that they don’t shy away from the humorous side of it. Not sure how well he’s going to do once he gets that transfer to a combat zone, but I’m sure there’s plenty of useful stuff he can do without needing to be a sniper or something.
(And damn, I really covet Ginger Rogers’s hair in this film.)
One of the major themes of the story is that people often see only what they want/expect to see in each other because most of us spend a lot of our time and energy performing the roles we believe we’re supposed to play. Sometimes people get backlash for deciding not to do that; others find it’s their only path to happiness.
But I didn’t mean to wax so philosophical. Just enjoy this handsome man and his funny faces.
