I'M GETTING TIRED EVEN FOR A PHOENIX !
here's the story of a girl... whose family arranged a marriage for her before she could even walk as a ploy to maintain and further their social status n now she doesn't know what she wants or who she is or what she's doing and she's doing her best, okay ?!
mehmet was the oldest of the kavas family, the prized son with so much to prove. his mother, a match - maker in her spare time, was eager to find a beautiful girl to bolster the family line. of course, it was nothing more than a ploy to expand their social presence, the girl of their choosing the eldest daughter of an influential family with property the kavases had long had their eye on. it is rumored that deeds were exchanged as vows were said, wealth and influence shared just as bread was broken at the same table, but duty is duty, and this was no exception. while one might imply the marriage was loveless, an act of familial obligation before anything else, there was a love there — defying the odds.
their arrival on london's social scene could only be described as a surprise to many, a family with wealth tied back to the spice trade enough to make even the most unobservant turn their heads. the topic of their departure from turkey was subject to numerous whispers, with allegations of criminal activity and social ruin running wild. the truth, however, was far less exciting : mehmet sought to expand his family's footprint beyond the rigid confines of ankara, hoping to bring honor to his parents and win the approval they'd often held hostage. london, though a lovely landing spot for a young couple and their soon - to - be - expanding family, was merely a card in the hand they'd been dealt. they settled in easier than one might expect, with their history and wealth speaking for itself, and soon, they navigated their way to the upper echelon of london's society.
the first - born is a difficult role to play, and it wasn't as though alara was given a choice. born soon after her parents arrival in london, it's said that she came into the world without a sound — not a cry, nor a wail, but a whisper of a whimper. her mother recounts the agonizing panic of her first - born daughter's silence with a laugh in the years removed, but the experience is enough to keep alara doted on with startling dedication. each milestone is celebrated to the fullest, to the utmost degree, and even when her siblings are born, it's clear to many that despite love given freely to each child in the family, there's something special about alara's relationship with her mother. the apple of her eye, center of her world — the child with the most to prove.
her childhood is nothing out of the ordinary, time split between ballet and assisting her mother with looking after the brood of her siblings that followed. dame school was a benefit she knows she was fortunate to have, developing an affinity for reading by candlelight after the rest of the house quiets each night. she prepares herself for society with the same dedication olympians prepare themselves for the gold medal match, and with each compliment from her instructors, she knows such dedication shows.
it doesn't come as a shock when her parents sit her down at the tender age of eighteen, revealing their intentions to coordinate her eventual marriage with their social and political needs. after all, she knows how her parents met, and the only thing harder than gaining status is . . . well, keeping it. her better half comes from a family they're quite close with, and it's almost enough to make it feel magical : that her parents love her enough to do this, ensure that her future is set, leaving nothing to chance. the two have been friends for a number of years, since they were old enough to walk, climb trees, play pretend. it doesn't at all feel suffocating, like the air leaving the room, like she's struggling to breathe. it feels like fate, like the romances she's snuck from the bookstore to read by candlelight.
they never do tell her that such arrangement was agreed upon far before then, that none of it was accidental. in a haze of naivety, alara never asks.
her debut into society comes with an official engagement, the betrothal coming as quite a shock to others, the truth hidden like a secret. her parents insist she maintain the façade that all was organic, a series of happenstance and not the meddling of families looking to expand their reach. her better - half is her rock throughout it all, despite the stress it brings. what once felt like a romance novel now feels like a weight on her chest, her fate signed on the dotted line before she ever had a chance to enjoy life at its fullest. but duty is duty, and she walks into it with a knowing smile.
it was never meant to happen — that's what she tells herself in the middle of the night, when she tosses and turns and wonders where everything went wrong. it was a mistake . . . one that she makes over and over again. they're sweet, the person she tumbles into bed with despite the ring on her finger and her world promised to another. they make her feel free, feel alive, feel something more than a sense of impending dread. she knows that it can't last forever, that she has a duty to her family to do what she must, yet she finds herself back at that door so often. they make it a point not to talk about the future they're not able to have, but alara finds herself thinking about it more often than not. how different would her life be ? would she be happier, would she feel more fulfilled ? the clock is ticking down to the wedding, and their relationship has an expiration date, and she can't bring herself to stop. she doesn't know what her better - half would say. often, she doesn't think of them at all.
QUICK FACTS !
alara's entire character is based on my thought process of 'what if the soundtrack of the regency era was just midnights by taylor swift' ft. 'you're losing me.' no thoughts, vibes only.
"and i wouldn't marry me either, a pathological people pleaser" was written about alara fr fr.
alara's journey mirrors her father's in a lot of ways, and she fails to break the cycle that he set into motion. as the first - born, he sought the approval of his parents and was desperate to win their affection. similarly, alara is desperate to win her father's approval — she has her mother's approval and affection, but her father has always been just out of her reach.
she's driven by duty at the end of the day — her parents expect her to behave in a certain way and she does, because that's what's expected. she spends a lot of time fantasizing about her wants and needs, and aside from her... situationship, spends very little time actually acting on it.
despite her moral failings, alara really does value her better - half. they're an incredible friend and partner, and the person she trusts most in this world. they're in parallel situations and the only people who truly understand what they're going through is each other. while a number of marriages in the era are "arranged" in some way, shape, or form, alara likes to think she's the only person going through what she is. because she's quirky like that.
for as charming and sweet as she can be, alara can be quite abrasive as well. she has oldest daughter syndrome to the extreme.
she would love to visit home one day — despite never knowing turkey from anything more than her parents' recollections, she feels a strong connection and desperately longs to visit.
at the end of the day, she really does have the best intentions. however, the road to hell is paved with good intentions, so it doesn't matter much at the end of the day.
i'll probably update this as more comes to me but the truth is that she's doing her best and her best isn't all that great but that's okay we love her yes girl give us nothing!
WANTED CONNECTIONS !
THE BETTER - HALF. alara's betrothed — the person she's been best - friends with since they were little. regardless of their engagement, and her activities outside of the relationship, this is someone that alara truly does care about and value. at the end of the day, they've been through a lot together. how much they know or don't know would be entirely up to you. maybe they have feelings, maybe they don't. maybe they're cool with it, maybe they're not. it's all very hand - wavy and entirely up to whoever would want to write it. kept it gender - neutral as well as alara's my bi baby (be who you are !) and loves everyone.
THE SITUATIONSHIP. it was only supposed to be a one - time thing, and each time is supposed to be the last . . . until it isn't. she can't seem to quit them ; they make her feel alive, and when they're together, the future doesn't seem as suffocating. the entire situation is fucked up, she knows, and she has no one to blame but herself for pulling them into this mess. whether the feelings are genuine or not would be entirely up to you, and kept gender - neutral as well because why not !
FRIENDS. please give alara someone she can confide in . . . she clearly has a lot she needs to express.
ENEMIES. let's be real : alara's probably made some enemies. give me those situations where they hate each other for some small, miniscule reason. they hate each other for big reasons. they don't even hate each other, they just can't get along ! give it to me.
SOMEONE WHO KNOWS. how they found out is entirely up to you, but knowledge is a weapon and they fully intend to wield it to get what they want.
LITERALLY ANYTHING. please give me anything like fr i'm not picky at all and i love creating new dynamics and causing problems on purpose!
