30 Day Avatar the Last Airbender Challenge
Day 22: Favorite villain; Wan Shi Tong
"Mortals are so predictable and such terrible liars."

"Really? That’s good to know." She filed that information away for later use, if she needed to know they had fiction. It was nice to know though, that even the great library appreciated fictional works. “I’d love that. I love to read all sorts of stories really. I am never found without a book if I can help it." New books, old books, all books were Jinora’s love. Of course each book had it’s own appeal or lack of appeal to her, but they were all appreciated.
Didn’t he still have a say in the matter? Did his foxes do it all or did he ask them to get certain items at times? Quite interesting if he were to explain it to her. He must know it all in order to be the caretaker.
"That is a good trait to have, young airbender," the owl said with a nod of his great head. "Books are the windows into the mind, as the eyes are windows into the soul. I hope that you continue to allow knowledge of all kinds to permeate your conscious, not just simply fact or simply fiction. It takes knowledge of all kinds to be wise."
The Personal Nonfiction section was several floors above the floor Wan Shi Tong had first found Jinora, and the owl took ample opportunity to announce the different book sections as they passed. The passed sections on healing, herbology, potions and poisons, zoology, archaeology, architecture, and past an entire floor of books just dedicated to the subject of psychology.
Finally, Wan Shi Tong lead her into a section of the library that Jinora so wanted to see. "This, young airbender, is the Personal Nonfiction of my Great Library. You may browse and ask questions, as I know you have been wanting to since you entered."
“The possession of knowledge carries an ethical responsibility.” I am Wan Shi Tong. He Who Knows Ten Thousand Things. I am the curator and founder of the Great Spirit Library. Non-humans and Spirits may browse to their minds’ content. Please leave some knowledge behind to further the education of another being.

This meant so much to Jinora. It was something she’d remember for the rest of her life, and probably get grounded for the rest of said life for as well. But she didn’t care. She was here, in Wan Shi Tong’s Library. THE Library. It was a rare experience.
"You have built this library over time. That must have been a lot of work and it’s very admirable. “Now she had to restrain herself from sounding like a fan girl. “I love journals, personal stories like the ones I brought you. I love reading over those and seeing what happened to people from their point of view. I know you are more a factual library though my favorite fiction is historical romance." She blushed, having been scolded for saying that before. Her father didn’t always like his little girl reading romance novels. He was afraid they’d get too…adult. She just loved the love stories. They were so sweet and she hoped for romance some day too!
"Contrary to legend," the owl said as they walked (although it was more like waddling for the Spirit, but nobody dare say that to his face), "my Library does have an extensive fiction section. I can take you there after we visit the personal records."
Wan Shi Tong did not control the influx of the incoming knowledge--it was the knowledge seekers that brought him materials. The sentient foxes know what the great owl had and did not have. He did not care what they brought him, fiction or nonfiction, so long as it was new material. It was cataloged, carded, and shelved all the same.

"There are new humans in every nook and cranny of my esteemed Library," Wan Shi Tong hissed. "You do not belong here, humans! Leave, now!"
"I have shelving and cataloging to accomplish. Please excuse me."
"My dear Moon Spirit, you are more than welcome to peruse my collection at your leisure," Wan Shi Tong said with a little nod of his head. "Your entourage of humans, however, is not. Especially not the once Fire Nation Princess. Please dismiss them if they are indeed yours, or I will see to their removal."
"I know you’re not fond of humans, and I know that’s almost entirely the fault of the Fire Nation, but I came to make a deal with you," Azula said firmly, feet rooted to the ground. She looked like she’d seen better days, too, with her hair matted and her skin a sickly shade. The asylum wasn’t doing her any good, at all. “It would restore a large chunk of your literature on the Fire Nation and firebending."
The Knowledge Spirit fixed Azula with a baleful stare. "It would be a breach of my utmost moral compass to make a deal with you, human. You who have brought unknowable amounts of pain, death, and suffering upon the human world. As tempting as your offer is, I must decline. I will restore my section on your people in ways that agree with my moral and ethical sensibilities. Please leave my Library at once."
Wan Shi Tong was amused by the young girl’s boldness, but he let the amusement pass him by as he inspected the journals.
"These are acceptable additions to my collection," the great owl said gravely, sweeping a wing over the offerings and tucking them away for later cataloging and storage. “Keep your copies, young airbender, these are far more valuable."
The Spirit straightened in front of her, saying stiffly, “You may look through my great collection. I will give you a tour myself."
There were nerves too, certainly many nerves involved. But Jinora knew she had to stand strong to even stand a remove chance with the Knowledge Spirit. She had made certain to let her nerves show on the way over so she would be able to hold them in better on the way there.
A sense of relief filled her, and it showed as she let out a sigh for such a reason. “Of course. I didn’t bring them with me because I know you prefer original items. I’ve read about your library before." She read just bout everything she could get her hands on.
Jinora nodded, agreeing and not arguing. She wasn’t about to fight an all powerful spirit. “That sounds wonderful. You know it best after all."
The great Knowledge Spirit drew himself up and fluttered his feathers. He was not trustful of the girl before him--she was far too human and a descendant of the Avatar he most detested. But he was willing to give her a chance. A very closely-guarded chance.
"I suppose, as the library's curator, I do. Where would you like to start, young airbender? You said that personal fiction is your favorite?"
"My father was no thief. He was the Avatar, the bridge between Our World and the Spirit World." He responded crisply. His father had indeed told him of the time that he discovered the library and how he almost didn’t make it out alive, but it was most Sokka’s fault since he had taken the scroll the led to them discovering what the ‘Darkest Day’ was.
"Avatar Aang was merely a child and he never meant any harm to others."
"Your personal bias clouds your judgement," The Spirit said stiffly. "As an airbender, you should know better. The age of your father nor his intent makes so difference in the action he assisted in."
"My dear Moon Spirit, you are more than welcome to peruse my collection at your leisure," Wan Shi Tong said with a little nod of his head. "Your entourage of humans, however, is not. Especially not the once Fire Nation Princess. Please dismiss them if they are indeed yours, or I will see to their removal."
"There is no doubt that Avatar Aang’s failed to succeed in conquering the Fire Nation of the day of block sun," the great Spirit allowed with a ruffle of his feathers. "The Air Nomad way was a way to be admired. You, as a one of the last remaining airbenders, should strive to honor and maintain it."
Satisfied for the moment with her logic, but not at all trustworthy of her motives, Wan Shi Tong settled back in front of her, his interested piqued by the offer of knowledge. piqued. “And what would you have brought with you, young airbender?"
Unfortunately true, she couldn’t disagree with the spirit and she’d said it herself! “I was the second to last when I was born, and I was the first female born after the Air Nomad Genocide. It is my duty to help bring its ways back and respect our traditions. I take pride in that." Jinora did her best to sound older than she was at that moment because she WAS proud of her people, of her race. She was never one to deny who she was, always happy to be an airbender. Her connection with her element resonated deep.
"I bring you journals from my grandparents and ‘relatives’. They are special and I admit I wrote down copies of all of them so I could still re-read them but these are the originals. They are tales of the war from the point of view of those who lived it and helped end it. Real life stories are my favorite." Jinora smiled, pulling out more. It had been a pain to bring so many books down because it got heavy for such a little girl but she was determined to bring offerings because it was only right.
"I bring you records of the first Air Nomad children raised by their parents in a long time. It has been many generations since such a thing happened. We are not Nomads right now but we are airbenders and we are raised by our parents in as close an environment as possible to the way it would be at a temple. Our mother is a nonbender, some of this is her writing. She was raised as an Acolyte on our Island from the time she was a child. And the rest is my father’s, and mine. I talk about my siblings too but I’m the oldest. It’s my job to keep up the legacy." The journals themselves weren’t thick, though there was much writing in each, which is how she could bring so many with her. They had filled her bag to the point of bursting. But they all got there and that was what mattered.
Wan Shi Tong was amused by the young girl's boldness, but he let the amusement pass him by as he inspected the journals.

Blake: I am a wanderer. And I ain’t no bloody human. I’m more than meets he eye.
"I was not referring to you, Death God. I was referring to the other three human who entered alongside you. You, as a non-human, are more than welcome in my Library. I must resign that knowledge or not, you will bring Death anyways."
Headcanon
Logic goes a long way with Wan Shi Tong. He may not like your ancestry or species, but he will respect strong, sound logic.
This does not, however, mean that he will trust you.
