one thing that works really well about succession is that their wealth is played for laughs, while the fucked-up family dynamic is the basis of the drama 

we’re invited to laugh at them for being so rich, because it makes them totally ridiculous! they’re so out of touch. they don’t behave like normal people. kendall unable to find his own coffee in his own house without his staff, connor running around screaming about cold butter, tom and greg eating rare songbirds with napkins on their heads. it’s supposed to be funny, their richness and how it’s turned them ridiculous. 

but then the drama—and the trauma—of their family dynamic can stand on its own and be heartbreaking. they never try to make us go “boo hoo, it’s so hard for them to be so rich,” because that would make the audience scoff. alongside our laughter at these unhinged rich people, we also see the tragedy of how deeply deeply broken they are. 

and it’s subtle. they don’t belabor the point with melodrama. they don’t push it or work too hard for our sympathies (which would also turn the audience off). kendall pathetically stammering “my dad loves me, he does” and letting the awkward silence hang in the air. the uncomfortable shot of roman in the car, the silence and the hurried acceptance of half-baked apologies after his father has hit him hard enough to knock out a tooth. the many silent, dialogueless shots following jeremy strong and his hangdog expression, the emptiness we feel following him. 

the pain is in the subtlety, really. because it’s not overwrought. it’s not melodramatic. there’s no screaming and crying and throwing things—or if there is, kendall dutifully sweeps up the broken q-tips and tucks it all away in the trashcan after. it’s painful because there’s a nonchalantness to their trauma. it’s normal. it’s so normal they don’t even quite see it for what it is. it hangs heavy in the air in the quiet moments, a fucked-up elephant in the office and god we start to wish they could see it as clearly as we do.    

succession does a lot of interesting things with genre, incorporating the camera conventions of a traditional sitcom and truly unhinged dialogue into a drama. but that balance of comedy and tragedy is the key to an audience’s sympathies for people who are, quite literally, the worst rich people we can imagine. but they’re funny because they’re rich, because we get to laugh at them for it, because we’re never asked to sympathize with their wealth but to mock it. yet the roy children are broken—deeply, deeply broken, in different but distinct ways—and we see that too in quiet, subtle moments that hang uncomfortably unspoken in the air

The simple truth is that this was easily preventable. This is what happens when maintenance is deferred, repeatedly, for decades. Norfolk Southern already had two major derailments in the last six months. The writing was very clearly on the wall. NS refused to follow basic maintenance schedules. The NTSB and FRA refused, failed, or were unable to enforce existing standards. This is a massive failure all thanks to the race to maximize short-term profit that governs the big national railroads. NS was the butt of jokes in the industry for decades due to the shoddy state of both its trackage and rolling stock, but the reality of it was no joke. One of the largest environmental disasters in US history, unfolding before us, is a result of unbridled capitalism and toothless regulatory agencies.

This was preventable. The people who caused this have names and addresses. People will suffer for decades because of this.

I think Roman’s “impotence” is so interesting bc it comes from not being able to ask/or say what he needs..like he lacks agency he’s all funny and perverse until it comes down to the act. I think he craves “normal” sex (which whatever that means to him?) but he can’t allow that kind of vulnerability. He’s with gerri bc that feels right being told he’s a fuck up and worthless and gross affirms thoughts and beliefs he already has but having missionary with lots of eye contact and passion is much scarier. He can let Lukas pee on his phone bc it’s fun to be gross but the second he’s asking him about failure he flounders. He can’t be with Tabitha bc he can’t be honest, he can’t tell her “I don’t know what I want/I don’t know how to want anything because my entire life I’ve gotten whatever I wanted (except what matters” bc he doesn’t have the words.
