The Ethiopia Skate campaign, founded by Abenezer Temesgen and Sean Stromsoe started off with a humble motto declaring, “We just wanna skate.” But their story, and how the campaign grew, tells a poignant tale about how we can use the tools available to us to make an impact. Websites like Facebook and Twitter seem like superfluous diversions to us westerners, but such simple tools helped the world find out about an important cause, and moreover, has inspired many of them to take action. With enough media exposure, the founders decided to start an Indiegogo campaign. Fast forward two weeks later and they have raised close to $5,000. Although they just “want to skate”, Sean and Abenezer are doing much more than just that. In only a few months they have introduced a sport that was virtually inexistent in Ethiopia. Thanks to them, dozens of kids have started skating, and the number grows everyday. They’re goal is to build Ethiopia’s first skate park, and they are well on their way to succeed. But more than that, Sean and AB’s story is a story about how a simple and humble idea can stir and change people’s minds around the world. They are the prime model of how our future generations will help the impoverished, and they are here to stay.
