He smirked a little. “Even though I always win those debates,” he chuckled. “I always thought you hated losing, huh?”

“You don’t always win, I recall a few times where -” She pointed out, her voice sharpening, until she realised she was heading towards another debate. “I do, but I must say, the debate itself is fun. I might even say I’m a bit competitive.”

“You’re…” he chuckled and shook his head. “You’re one of those people I can’t seem to get rid of. I guess…well, I can’t imagine my life without your voice babbling about every damn thing. It’d be too quiet without you.”

Effie laughed, a genuine laugh, not her usual high pitched giggle. “Well, I shall take that as a compliment.” She stated proudly. “And I must say, I don’t think I could live without you either, I quite enjoy our little, well I won’t say arguments... debates.”

He smiled weakly, staring down at his hands in his lap.

“Thank you for…well, putting up with me,” he said quietly. “No one else would, probably, and I’m…well, I’m just…so glad you’re in my life in whatever way this is.”

“I’m not just putting up with you.” Effie piped up, wanting to make her point known. “I know I may not show it a lot of the time, but believe it or not, I genuinely enjoy spending time with you.” She smiled, a nervous laugh escaping her. “I’m surprised you’ve put up with me for so long!”

She nodded, “I’d like a bandaid, please. But don’t worry. I should have been paying attention to what was going on around her.” Something she’d never learned to do while she was working, unfortunately.

“No, no, no.” Effie persisted, clasping her gloved hands in front of her. “Don’t blame yourself, it was entirely my fault. Is there anything else I can get for you?”

“I uh…” he shook his head, his cheeks burning slightly. “I did it for you.”

He wouldn’t usually admit to anything, let alone admit to feeling anything. But she needed to know.

“I want to be…better…for you. I care about you, princess.”

“Oh.” She breathed, frankly she couldn’t muster up any other words. Her mind was running at an unknown speed, trying to make sense of the situation and come up with an answer that truly reflected what she felt. 

“I see.” She began, taking the words bit by bit and attempting to pace herself. “I’m very, very happy that you’ve decided to help yourself, to get better. And I know in the past you’ve irritated me, and I you. And sometimes we’d get at each others throats, but I think I’ve always known that - that I care about you too.”

“We could maybe go once a week?” He said, smiling softly.

Her final comment caught him off-guard. He wasn’t entirely sure what she meant.

“Proud of me for what, princess?”

“I’d like that.”

Effie smiled a bit, though she seemed a bit more serious than before. “Well, when we were at the restaurant, I was a tad apprehensive about the wine, but you controlled yourself. You did very well, I can tell that this change might be good for you.”

“Shut up, I’m paying,” he smirked, picking up his own menu.

He settled on pasta and put his menu down, waiting for Effie to decide before ordering their food.

By the time they’d finished, it was after 10pm. It was a little colder outside now so, as they walked home, he offered her his jacket. It was so out of character for him, but the small amount of alcohol he had consumed had softened his façade slightly.

It was difficult for Effie to choose what she was going to have, as when her eyes scanned the menu, everything seemed to appeal to her, she could hardly narrow it down to one thing.

However, she took a chance on the first thing that popped into her mind at the point of choosing, a chicken dish with grilled vegetables. 

It was mildly chilly outside, but nothing that Effie was not used to. Nevertheless, she gratefully took Haymitch’s jacket and wrapped it around herself. Once they had arrived home, she let out a sigh and sat herself down on the couch, handing him his jacket back.

“That was delicious, we definitely need to visit there more often. I really enjoyed your company” She smiled, looking away for a moment, her voice growing a tad quieter. “I’m very proud of you, Haymitch.”

He set the glass down after he’d taken a small drink, fully aware Effie was watching him. He was thankful, really. If she hadn’t meant something to him, he’d probably be onto his third glass by now.

“Choose what you want,” he said with a lopsided smile. “I’m paying. I don’t mind.”

"No, no, no, don't be silly." She scolded him, though it was in a lighthearted manner. Although very grateful of his proposal to pay for dinner, she didn't want to burden him with anything.

"I don't want you to be out of pocket just from a meal."

He smiled a little, ordering a small bottle of wine and pouring them both a glass once it arrived.

“To new beginnings…” he said softly, holding his glass up and clicking it with hers before taking a sip.

He knew it was a risk to drink, but having Effie in his life in whatever capacity was enough incentive for him to control it more effectively than he had done in the past.

“So…what do you wanna order?”

"To new beginnings." She held her glass up, her words mirroring his. Taking a sip, she let the pleasant sharpness of it overcome her.

Though despite the situation's pleasantness, she kept a keen eye on Haymitch and the amount he was drinking, silently moderating it in case something should get out of hand.

"Hmm..." Effie hesitated, eyes scanning the menu. "I'm not entirely sure yet, if I'm honest. There are so many options to choose from."

“Let me answer your question with another question.  Why don’t you get emotionally involved with the tributes from your district?”

"Because it is my job not to be. District 12 has never been known as the home of many victors. It's sad, it's horribly sad what happens, but it's my job and I need to put aside my feelings and just do it."

Portia shook her head, removing her finger from her mouth. The needle hadn’t hit the bone, and she was only bleeding a little. She’d be fine.

“It’s fine, I just need a bandaid.” She nodded. “Don’t worry about it. I was miles away.”

"Are you sure?" Effie persisted. Although she meant well, her fretting would only cause the situation at hand to seem worse than it already was. "I can fetch you one if that helps, it's the least I could do."

"Nevertheless, I shouldn't have startled you like that."
